    iPad memory sizing

So, silly question from a guy that has barely used his ipod touch beyond music storage. I'm looking at getting one of these fancy new iPad 2's that are coming out, but I have zero idea how much space I'd need. I don't expect to store a bunch of movies on it, but I might store a lot of e-books.

Anyone with a current iPad that can give me some ideas on how to judge which size iPad I'll want?

Well it seems like the games are only getting bigger but if you are not planning on putting many movies and music on there I would suggest the 32gig one (which is what I have). I have about 2 gigs worth of comics and 20 gigs worth of apps. At this point I am glad I didn't get the 16.

16GB is plenty for ebooks. Do you have a need to carry gigs and gigs of video and audio with you at all times, or will you be in wifi range to stream off a decently-powered home PC?

Yeah, you won't use a ton of space for ebooks, but iPad games are getting pretty big these days. Get the 32GB one.

Glad I asked. I was figuring 16GB or 64GB, figuring go cheap or, due to the way the price jumps work, go big. But there's no reason to go big as it sounds like 32GB will do the job pretty well.

I have 16GB and it was doing fine until bigger games came out. I don't play a lot, so it works fine, but I'd get the 32GB.

Yeah, 27GB of my 32GB iPhone 4 is apps with many gigs left not synced. I stream all my audio.

I have an iPod touch 32 GB and wish I'd saved the money and got the 16 GB model instead. 6 GB music, <2 GB other stuff including apps. How on earth do you get 27 GB of apps!?

    I think I'll go with 32 myself.

Another vote for the 32GB. I use mine mainly for games and reading comics/magazines, and especially the magazines will eat up space (Wired is normally around 400MB).

32GB is probably a good choice if you don't have video on it. I've got 16 GBytes of Audio files, and I don't think I've got a particularly large music collection.

Personally I've got gobs of Video and would have upgraded to the iPad 2 if they had offered a 128GB option. I'm constantly erasing stuff on my 64GB to make space for new stuff. HD Video takes a lot of space, for example one episode of BBC's Sherlock takes 2.8 GB.

But if you're absolutely sure you don't want to store video on it, 32GB is probably enough.

Have you tried Air Video? If you have a decent upload at home, it'll even work over the Internet.

Does it work well on the iPad? Or is it going to display video in the tiny window in the middle of the screen?

I don't have an iPad yet but, based on my iPhone usage, I am planning to buy the 32GB one.

I can see watching video on it, like a portable Tivo, but I don't see maintaining video on it like I would music. As long as I could maintain 3 or 4 HD full length movies on it for long plane trips, I think I'd be good.

The real question is how much do you travel? If you are travelling a lot, then 64gb is probably the way to go just to be able to load a few movies on it for on the go. Otherwise I'd say the 32gb one.

It would be nice if they actually added SD card support to these things and simply limiting it to media content only and apps installed on to the main system memory itself. It would still promote purchasing a larger size due to the # of apps / games you want loaded, but also allow people to bring along a media collection for travel. Win win in my books.

Yeah, like rei said, it works great. Hasn't choked on a file yet and will even display soft subtitles. Easy to share out multiple folders, and stuff plays full screen. It could be better over the Internet, but over wifi, it's fantastic.

I have the 32GB and it works for now, but I can't hold as much music on it as I want. Like people have said, apps are getting big, and I'm probably somewhere around 10GB myself, about 1 GB of books (which is a lot of books) and the rest gets filled with music.

If I had to do it again, I'd seriously consider the 64GB model. I'm just glad I decided to upgrade to at least 32GB instead of the 16GB I was originally planning.
