Yeah, I'm definitely experiencing motion sickness playing this game. I played it briefly, and was enjoying the bits that I was able to play but couldn't keep going because of the nausea and whatnot.

Like most others here, I hate the inventory system, I kept ended up drinking alcohol instead of using my weapon because everytime I picked up something, it became the new equipped item. It reminds me of Borderland's system, except in Borderlands if you held down the key, the item wouldn't auto equip but instead went straight to your inventory.

It's also a pain trying to switch items holding down middle mouse button and scrolling to the item, I'd prefer it if its just a quick middle mouse click or maybe after a set duration holding the middle mouse button, it locks the inventory, so you don't have to keep holding it and trying to change your item.

Hopefully I can either take some pills for motion sickness or using some sort of home remedy to keep playing. I had to do the same thing with Bioshock.

Dead Island can definitely be an enjoyable experience, but it looks like the PC version is a rush/sloppy port.

It's the exact opposite here. Just barely tap the key, and you won't equip the bottle/ medkit. Generally, yep, this UI is a complete disaster.

Not happy with the current state of "Island of Misfit Ports."

Thanks for the tip, that should help make things easier.

    Okay, random thoughts.

I've only played a few hours but so far it seems alright. My enjoyment grew considerably when I started using a 360 controller since the UI is a bad port job from the console version, and like I mentioned earlier, it's the only way to use the good melee combat system. And there's a lot of melee combat.

I started as the asian bladed weapons girl, but after about 40 minutes only found a couple knives, and they degraded super fast, so I looked into the other characters' skill trees. I ended up switching to the rapper blunt (heheh rapper, blunt, get it?) weapons dude, since regeneration sounded good and there are ten trillion blunt weapons in the game. In truth it almost hasn't mattered, since up to where I am, the best attack is the free kick that doesn't cost stamina and knocks enemies down really easily. It takes longer to kill zombies but then the weapon degradation isn't so bad.

Speaking of, weapons degrade too fast. Even with a couple points in the skill that reduces it, most pipes and such are worthless after ~6 zombies. I will happily mod degradation down to 1/3 of what it is if it ever becomes an option.

Sound design is pretty good. Zombies sound appropriately creepy. I'm having trouble telling which direction sounds are coming from, which is probably intentional, but it's still annoying after spending so much time recently playing Deus Ex:HR and Red Orchestra 2, which have amazing positional audio. It does leave me a bit more on edge since it's hard to tell for sure which corner a zombie is behind.

The open world has a lot of incidental stuff to find, but it kind of feels like none of it matters. I've only found one side area that was noteworthy that I won't spoil here, and the rest were pretty generic bungalows. I hope there are more hand-crafted special areas to find later.

There are a lot of zombies, and they respawn pretty quickly. It's fun throwing gas tanks at them and bowling them over. You can drown them if you knock their head completely underwater! I don't know how that works but you totally can!

I fell in between two hedges once and got stuck and had to reload.

He can still bite you, but his reach and damage reduced by 75% at least.
You can also slice their arms off, if you use bladed weapons, like I do. Few things are funnier than an armless thug trying to menacingly headbutt you to death.

I havent gotten too far but my initial reaction is that there are way too many energy drinks around as health replenishment and no guns in sight for my gun expert to use. From reading other reviews I hear the latter doesn't get any better. "Realistic" but disappointing. Why not put a Navy or local warlord's base on the island to shore up the arsenal? Or company black ops ala Umbrella? Sigh.

Weapons start lasting a lot longer fairly soon. Not sure why they made it so exaggerated at the beginning. I'm level 10 and have no points in skills that improve degradation and I can now fight for a long time with the weapons I carry with me without losing them.

Thanks for this very useful information for people like us!

Definately bargain bin pick up for me then as I will probably have the same issues with it which means I can play it maybe 1 hour at a time and then have to relax and do something else...

    Fair warning:
The "WTF is Hard Reset" on YouTube gave me some pretty bad feelings last night as well (even watching the video already made me feel sick... :p)

This quick look assures me that I will most definitely get it in a month or two on the 360:

You are crazy this game is awesome at release for 360. Played five or so hours tonight and it was a blast - mostly in single player with the Chinese knife expert.

    What a complete fuckup.

Did you manually delete the directory from the Steam folder? I find Steam leaves a whole heap of shit there when you "delete local content".

Naw, just followed their instructions of deleting local content and re-downloading. Im not gonna bother downloading the client for a 3rd time. Unless they somehow patch it im just writing this one off.

Love the game, I did hook up my 360 controller and tired the analog fighting but damn I suck at it lol. One weird thing is yesterday it kept telling me there games I could join, but since last night nothing at all.

Fair enough, can't blame you. Pretty disastrous release.

Did anyone buy this for the not-PC? I want to hear about how the game plays on its native platform.

What I ended up doing for Bioshock, was taking Dramamine, which allowed me to play for a much longer time, and I eventually got used to it, to the point that I stopped needing the pill. I also tried like taking ginger, but it didn't work as well as the Dramamine. I may try it for Dead Island, since people said they released the actual PC build now?

The only difference between the original, wrong release and the current release on Steam is the removal of the cheat codes and debug files. It remains a sloppy console port; it's just a sloppy console port that doesn't have a 'noclip' command mapped to the 'y' key.

Just started to play again after I patched to the 1.0 version, and I noticed on my task manager that when Dead Island launches, the priority is set to "below normal"

why would do that? to maybe is a workaround for the app crashing tryiing to alt-tab? (?), or some subthread lagging behind the main process? (??)

So for those that are playing : Does an actual story exist in game, and if so how is it?

The advertisements make it look like there may be an actual ongoing story with plot hidden somewhere among all the zombie smashing. Is this the case, and if so, how is it so far? One of the things that turned me off of Left 4 Dead was that it never felt like I was involved in a story beyond rushing to the next checkpoint and killing along the way. I know it's crazy talk, but I want my zombie game to have an interesting plot and NPCs I may actually care about.

According to the GameTrailers video review I downloaded last night and watched, there's a story, but it blows. It apparently picks up toward the end, but it might as well not exist after you get kicked out of the introductory area and co-op becomes enabled.
