I did read them (or as much as I cared to anyway) and your summary seems accurate. He does in fact seem to be struggling with his own thoughts, and also having trouble being coherent. Given his later actions, I could certainly see mental illness coming into play in his trial.

It's no surprise the man might have some issues, but mental disorder is not a side show.
