I can't believe Graham got up after that spine-crunching hit.
I'm also not sure how safeties are supposed to play the position anymore. By definition a receiver is defenseless when he's in the act of catching the ball. You're not supposed to hit him then?
Pretty much. They can still make a tackle on a defenseless receiver and/or try to knock the ball away, but wipeout hits on such a player are no longer part of the game under the current rules.
linkNFL rules provide special protection to defenseless players, by prohibiting (a) hits delivered to their head or neck area by an opponent with his helmet (including facemask), forearm, or shoulder, and (b) hits delivered by an opponent with his helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/"hairline" parts) against any part of the defenseless player's body (i.e., "butting, spearing, or ramming" a defenseless player.)
Defenseless players are defined as (a) a player in the act of or just after throwing a pass; (b) a receiver catching or attempting to catch a pass; (c) a runner already in the grasp of a tackler and whose forward progress has been stopped; (d) a kickoff or punt returner attempting to field a kick in the air; and (e) a player on the ground at the end of a play.
So where did the defender violate that rule? He didn't hit the head of the receiver, and he did not lead with his own helmet. He lowered his shoulder and drove it into the player. Yes, his helmet then hit as well--I have news for the NFL, the shoulder and the head are are pretty damned close to each other, and if one hits, the other is probably going to as well.
That call was a joke, ridiculous. It is flag football time in the NFL.
Chucky on ESPN's broadcast was as well.
In other news, Jack Del Rio's out in Jacksonville.
And yet Norv Turner still walks the earth as a free man.
Norv hasn't gone 14-2 yet. Spanos only fires coaches who win almost all of their games.
Suh is expected to be suspended for two games, reports Jay Glazer.
They also sold the team too it seems Jaguars Sold
Also, I agree with the late hit penalty, while it was a brutal hit, it was a terrible call. I think they called a similar one when Hakeem Nicks got blown up during the game too.
And Suh gets suspended for two weeks. Seems about right.
Yeah. I wouldn't have been outraged if he had gotten 3 games but I guess that last-minute call to Goodell was worth knocking a game off. Plus, I would imagine they look at these incidents from a perspective of whether or not the other player was injured, which he wasn't (although he could have, he still wasn't).
And I understand that you need to have an appeals process in place but it sure would make the league look bad to have Suh playing this Sunday against the Saints, which IIRC was Flex'd to the national night game. A lot of dads explaining why the big jerk from Thanksgiving is still playing. WELL, YOU SEE, THERE'S THIS APPEALS PROCESS WHEREIN
On the other hand, it's a teachable moment for fairness too. While Suh's actions were ridiculous, not all suspensions are as cut and dried.
No, the team has been sold.

Actually, yes. That's exactly what they're going to have to do, unless they have an opportunity to make a play on the ball.
Of course, there's a risk/reward there too. If the play is further than 15 yards downfield, the defender could still try a blowup hit on the off chance that it won't be flagged. Even if it is, the gain will be less than it would be if he let the receiver catch the ball.
It sucks for d-backs/linebackers (and for purists), but that's just the direction the game is moving.
Colts fire their DC. The housecleaning begins.
Despite being an obvious candidate for relocation based on fan support, the Jaguars are locked into a pretty tight long-term lease that would make a move legally difficult and ultimately very expensive. That is one of the legacy's of Weaver's ownership, which is ironic since even he admitted a few years ago that local support has never been what he thought it would be. But the whole thing is somewhat odd, including the decision to extend the GM three years which means the new owner is saddled with the old management group. But the coaching change raises the question of what happens with Gabbert, the one first rounder from this year that hasn't really shown even flashes of ability. And if the Jags are back in the QB hunt, that makes the demand in this years draft for the top picks even higher. As bad as things have been in places like St. Louis, they could be in line for a very nice trade offer if a bidding war among teams desperate for Barkley and other alternatives to Luck.
Whatever in Indy. Like its the DCs fault that team has looked so bad. I'm more and more on the side of the Indy columnist who thinks the Colts should start over from scratch, from the Polians on down.

Suh is a monster that must be stopped! Man, I only wish football was that awesome.
