My wife wants to buy me a Kindle.

So, title pretty much sums it up. I've been interested in the e-ink displays since first hearing of them, and obviously the standard kindle is quite cheap compared to early e-readers that were $400+. But I am wondering how the DRM status is, and a bit worried that it's a little bit of a frivolity and novelty. So, how is the Kindle? Should I be telling her to look at a different product? Do any of you still use an e-reader regularly?

I've already told her not to look at the DX due to the near-tripling of price. (I don't care for 3G.)

I bought my Kindle a couple of months ago, and it's pretty much ruined normal books for me. Using the device is just so much more comfortable and convenient. I've found myself reading a lot more since I got it.

I haven't had any DRM issues, but I haven't tried purchasing from anywhere other than Amazon. Not sure why you would, really. It's been happy to read the few free eBooks I've tried on it so far.

I actually like Kindle on my Droid, it's suprisingly readable and ultra-convenient for planes and just having something to read. That said, I don't really buy books any more I just get them from the library, so I only use it to cover classics.

Look at the Kindle threads. That should answer your question about whether we like our Kindles and still use them.

I wouldn't care about the Kindle DX because it's too big and heavy and what really makes the Kindle for me (as opposed to the iPad) is size, weight and the fact that it's a dedicated e-reader and nothing else. 3G is great if you're not too good at planning like me... sitting in a internet free cabin on a campingsite having just finished the middle book of a series and then being able to just log on, press buy and then continue reading the next book is all kinds of awesome.

I'm not completely happy about the Kindles DRM... but ease of use, number of books avaliable and the awesome connection directly to the store makes me a very pleased Kindle-owner.

I am also able to strip the DRM from my Amazon purchases so I can load them into Stanza or iBooks. However, with Amazon apps on my iPad and iPhone as well as the desktop app, there's little incentive to do so.

You're questioning this? It's wonderful dude. Let her get it for you and be grateful, having those books available is awesome.

Kindle is crack for books. I am already a book fanatic, and have a huge library, but now someone mentions a book, I go to Amazon and in 30 seconds it's on my Kindle. Amazon should give Kindles away because of how many more books people buy from them once they get one.

Because I'm on a tight budget, when someone mentios a book, I download a sample which also serves as a reminder of the books I want in the future. I really like the ability to read a sample first.

I've owned two Kindles and just about never read any other way anymore. I gave three Kindles (one of which I formerly owned, admittedly) to my family. So worth it.

    This.
This is such a brilliant feature. It's a reminder of books I want and a way to sample. If I don't like it or never gets round to reading it, there's no money lost - I still have unread paper books bought on some whim laying about.

My mother got me a kindle for me last Christmas, and as soon as I finished the paperback I had been working on I got right into it. I love reading on it, and it is really very nice, its also a lot easier for me to carry around, I can just throw it in my bag and not worry about it getting damaged like I have to with paperbacks. ( she splurged for the leather clamshell thing).

The best feature in my use case though, is that I have 4 other family members who are all avid readers, and all 5 kindles were purchased in my fathers name under his amazon account. So we basically decided to make our selfs a little family plan since you get multiple activations per kindle purchase, if one of us buys a book its like we all get a copy, which has allowed us to continue sharing books and recommendations even though only my parents are left in my home town. Its pretty wonderful.

My wife wants one of these, Which Kindle do you recommend? I'm leaning towards the smaller "free 3G" one? Anyone have one?

    I vote "yes".

DRM in Kindle is a bit... like Steam DRM. Yeah, it's DRM, but it's pretty painless, you can download the books the number of times you want, and have a strong company behind it (Amazon) so it's dubious they will fold and fuck you over the DRM.
Also, the DRM can be eliminated easily if you lean to that side of things, and the device also supports files without DRM without problem.

    We have a Kindle thread:

Speaking for myself, it's my favorite toy. For someone who travels a lot and reads a lot, the 3G version is just fantastic.

The no-3G model is $50 less and otherwise identical. I would recommend it over the 3G model unless you have no wireless access at home, or really need the ability to download books immediately whereever you may be. The latter sounds cool, but in practice I never used it on my Kindle 2 and have not missed it with my Kindle 3.

It might be worth mentioning that the Wi-Fi only Kindle 3 doesn't support WPA2 Enterprise (where you need both a username and password to connect to a Wi-Fi network). Shouldn't be an issue for most, except those who really want to be able to buy books or sync at work for whatever reason.

Disclaimer - I have a Kindle and LOVE it. But one thing to watch out for is that Australia and New Zealand are still getting the shaft on certain ebook titles (Richard Castle's Heat Wave comes to mind) due to what one assumes is idiotic distribution deals. It's still a good deal though, the US dollar has tanked so much (especially for you vs the Aussie dollar) that ebook prices are amazing value for us.

I have my Kindle region set to the US for this reason.

Is there a list of the available "regions" for the Kindle? For instance, here in Canada would the default region be "Canada" or "US" (since we have to buy the Kindle in the US and use the US Kindle store anyway)?

Do you need a US credit card or anything like that?
