Thanks for the tip. For $1, I grabbed this - hoping I can run some decent DosBox stuff.
Sorry, thought this deserved it's own thread so people know about it

Ever since Apple eased up their App Store approval guidelines, all kinds of crazy things have been getting released like the fabled GV Mobile+ [$2.99] and other apps that have been stuck in approval purgatory for months (or even years). Some emulators slipped through the cracks either by appeasing Apple's wishes such as Commodore 64 [$4.99] and others that were inexplicably approved, then immediately pulled like Nescaline. Late last night iDOS [99¢] was released. Based on DOSbox, an open source DOS emulator, iDOS is a universal app that has PC keyboard support, mouse support, multiple screen modes, and more.
Forum member Menneisyys posted the following two screenshots of iDOS running Spellcasting 101 both on his iPad and on his 4th generation iPod touch (Yes, it even runs at Retina Display resolution.):
Currently we've got a fairly active thread on our forums with people trying various games running in the emulator and there's another thread on the DOSPAD forums with even more compatibility testing going on. We're going to have our own retro fetishist Blake Patterson take a closer look at iDOS very soon, so if you've got any questions or want to see any specific games tested that aren't mentioned in the threads I linked, drop a comment and we'll try to include it in our followup post.
In the meantime, if you're even remotely interested in emulating old DOS games, this is 99¢ you need to spend. While iDOS technically seems to comply with all the new approval guidelines, it's hard to say whether or not this was an accidental approval or if iDOS truly does have the blessing of Apple. In any case, I'd download it now in the interest of being safe rather than sorry if the powers that be change their mind.

Bought it, good catch :) How do you get programs into it?
iTunes file sharing.
just pull the files into the File Sharing list on the Apps tab on the right from Finder / Windows Explorer after selecting "iDOS" on the left pane:
Easiest way is to use iTunes and drag a zip file of the game into the iDOS area.
Launch iDOS
at the c:\ prompt type DIR
You should see your zip file
type
cd games
mkdir nameofgame
cd nameofgame
unzip c:\nameofzip.zip
That will unzip the contents of the zip file into the new folder you created. You should then be able to run the game. If you dont know what to type to run the game, use the following commands to find out what to type to run it.
dir *.bat BAT files will often be the start command for a game
dir *.exe BAT files normaly just run the EXE file.
Haha, holy crap
edit: link that shows what games are working/ not workinghttp://toucharcade.com/2010/10/26/idos/
UPDATE: Just for an idea of exactly how deep the iDOS rabbit hole goes, and what the emulator is actually capable of: After blasting this link out to everyone I know, my friend Sam successfully installed Windows 3.0 and is currently playing Windows Solitaire on his iPad:

(sample)
Wasteland - ok
Gabriel Knight 1 - ok
Quake :) - works but totally unplayable (runs about half frame per second in 1.9, somewhat better with dynamic core, but don't expect more than a fast slideshow)
Darklands - ok
Ishar 2 - ok
Circuit's Edge - ok
Wizardry 7 - ok
Quest for Glory 3 - ok
It's gone already. Glad I grabbed it.
Omg... someone see if MOO runs...!!!
It still shows up in the store, but your purchase won't go through.
According to this post Star Control 2 and X-Com are working on it

If Apple allowed this app then I would instantly buy an iPad.
The changed their stance on emulators recently, but as far as I know the games have to be packaged with the emulator (so you also need the rights.). You can't execute code you download (otherwise you might build a ... DOS app store!)
So yeah, grab it while it's available.
HOLY CRAP IT'S DOS ON MY PHONE
Maybe the reports of it being pulled were incorrect? I already have it so I can't try to rebuy.
loading now in US Store. Purchased it directly from my phone
I was still able to download it direct to my phone about 15 minutes ago. I'm at work so can't play around with any of my old games, but Dig Dug and Ms Pac-Man were listed in a "games" directory.
I got Dig Dug up and running but it chugged along at about 5 frames per second. I'm on a 3G though so that's likely the problem.....which is unforntunate, becuase I doubt that will be fixed for another year or so. I'm looking foward to messing around some more tonight.
Digdug ran smooth on my iPhone 4.
I just downloaded it through the app store on my iPhone
There's this huge green thumbprint that blocks me from touching or using anything that it appears over. What is that thing and how do I get rid of it?
I think that's a hint to "use the keyboard, dummy" for non-Mouse games.
And now I need to learn dos so I can use this thing o.O
Any good resources?
Crap, I can't figure out how to edit dospad.cfg in DOS. It's telling me EDIT is an invalid command. It's been a looooong time DOS.
I just downloaded iDos from the US app store, so it's still there as of right now.
Yup, just got it myself as well. Now I'm itchin' for an iPad as the iPhone screen is just too damn small for this kind of stuff.
Anyone try Ultima7 or Ultima Underworld1/2? I wonder if the Exult version of U7 will run.
Yup confirmed I was able to buy it and install it no problem.
So, does this mean I can run ScummVM without jailbreaking my iPod?
I mean, by running it through DOS..?
