    Tech Podcasts

With the recent deaths of the Cranky Geeks and PCMag podcasts, there's a serious lack of tech in my podcast rotation feed. What tech news podcasts do you guys listen to?

Right now, I have tech5, Tested, and This Week in Tech. TWiT has really been lacking for months, wasting tons of time talking about the hosts instead of the actual news. I also listen to TWiG and TWiL, but these two talk about a subset of tech news and don't really scratch the right itch.

I'm really going to miss the Cranky Geeks show. It was half an hour of condensed, fast discussion about tech news every week, and it was great. I guess I saw this coming because of the diminished guest list, but it's still sad. The deaths of all of these shows are due to the new corporate overlords of Ziff Davis moving away from podcasts.

Also... what do you mean by "death" of Cranky Geeks? The show is alive and well, just the iTunes channel has changed IIRC.

Yesterday's episode was the last one. It's over. Dvorak said so on tech5.

Whaaaaat!? That's a terrible tragedy, it was my favorite podcast. :(. They had produced it outside of Ziff-Davis for quite a while now, why would they suddenly stop?

No, it was always a Ziff thing.

How so? They were Mevio productions for quite a while now. Carlos Rodela made them, that's why he was on the show a couple of times.

They still have the Ziff footer on the site. Ziff still lists them as a product. It's true they were on Mevio, but that must've been some joint venture thing.

Not in the sense that any money was still flowing from Ziff to Cranky Geeks, I don't think. Keep in mind that Dvorak himself is still writing for Ziff publications, so they might not mind linking to each other regardless.

It's possible that they were looking for new funding all this time and are shutting down now because they can't find it, though.

One of the comments in the last CG show linked to this Dvorak.org blog post where the master himself wrote thusly in comment #18:

The irony is that the demographics for the show should be at $100/per k levels if they understood anything at all.

It’s amazing that we managed to get 4 1/2 years out of the show.

    RIP
Not sure what "the two companies" refers to -- Ziff and Mevio? Sounds like Ziff still had some rights to the show and refused to sell them. That's what I would expect of Ziff, anyway.

Man, I hope they start a similar format on Mevio. They already have the Tech Grouch name, maybe bring the show back under that name...

Right. The show is one of Mevio's bigger draws, so if it were up to them, it'd go on forever.

Dvorak said on TWiT that Cranky Geeks was owned by Ziff, with a joint venture with Mevio on production and ads. Sounds like No Agenda, his show with Adam Curry, has a longer explanation.

So, anyone listen to other tech news casts?

Well, that's definitely true, though in this case, it's the decision of the PE firm that bought them. http://techcrunch.com/2010/06/04/zif...ec-vivek-shah/
