What's the problem with PES 2010? we play it at a friend's house all the time making leagues and its very fun.
While I'm not a fan of sports games I always had a soccer game for some quick fun. I remember when I was playing my mage on DAoC and I ran whole world cup tournaments while the mage was sitting recovering mana ;) Stand up, use all nukes and sit down to play soccer again.
Now in the last few years the situation was quite bad. PES/Winning Eleven suddenly got worse and worse to the point that it became just an irritating game with "vices" that just won't get solved (like the player running RIGHT when I'm pushing LEFT on the pad with all my strength, spewing all kinds of insults and curses), while FIFA improved a lot, but on consoles. Because EA had this brilliant idea of having PC on a separate, ancient codebase that is just awful.
This year FIFA had the console new engine ported on PC. Obviously all the new features on consoles aren't, which is retarded, but maybe I can finally play a fun game on PC?
I hope so. Tomorrow the demo comes out. Today I play PES 2011 demo and expect to find ALL the flaws of the last few years.
Japanese game design tends to be utterly DUMB toward the most obvious problems (see FFXXIXI).

You can call it football.
PES games make me break things.
The very basic thing I PRETEND is control on the player. PES games have players moving toward the ball ON THEIR OWN. Whenever the ball isn't right on your foot the player movement is done by the system. And the system is an idiot because if there's a long pass and there's another player close, you want to cut the trajectory. Instead you have your player running on its own further away, the other player cut shorts and steals the pass.
Same for high balls where you just can't adjust the position where the player will jump.
It's all fucking scripted as if you're playing a cutscene and I fight constantly with the controls to make players do WHAT I WANT. If the whole gameplay is about fighting the controls then it means the game is shit. If you instead think "soccer" and how the game actually plays, then the game is brilliant.
Also, PES2010 on PC was bugged.
The ball constantly slipping between the goalkeeper legs even with weak shoots. Or penalties being completely disabled.
PES cheats like fuck to the detriment of the human player, and as such should be shunned. Goddamn that's a frustrating game.
FIFA is certainly the more entertaining experience.
Yeah, feels like cheating. One of the games I got angry at the most.
But fifa 09 was rather shallow in gameplay.
PES featured the worst bug I can recall in a sports game in at least three versions; for all I know, it's still in there. The game, of course, knows as soon as you take a shot whether it's on goal or not. Goalies would not react to shots that were headed off-goal or that were going to hit the post. A real keeper would never do such a thing, and rebounds off the woodwork or other players would leave the keeper completely out of position and result in a slew of terrible, easy goals. Completely maddening whenever it happened, which was generally at least once a game.
Is Football Manager not a decent "soccer" gamer on the PC? :)
You're american, it's soccer, not "soccer" goddamnit.
I've played the PES 11 demo a while and it seems improved.
The biggest change is that they redesigned the basic pass, so instead of tapping X and have the ball on of the nearest players in the general direction where you point, we have even the short pass being "analogic". Meaning that you calibrate the strength for every pass, and the direction. It works quite well even if the default camera has a tilt when you get close to the opponent area and it means you see things slanted and so instinctively adjust the controls and mess with the proper direction.
Things like contrasts and tackles are improved and well balanced. Other problems are that things are too confused in the area, that you have less control then usual switching players and that shoots feel inconsistent and slow. Aggravated by the fact the ball sound is so muted, it completely kills the feel of speed and strength.
I also think there's too much difference between players depending on their stats, some players seem super-heroes on the field.
I played a bit more and the gameplay is nice indeed. But the defense AI is still terribad. Had passages crossing the field passing under the legs of defenders. Had a own goal because 2 AI players were running toward the ball, one trying to kick it far away, the other running in the other direction, so they collide and the ball goes in the net.
Other times the keeper parried but then the defenders stood still gaping, so I simply went in with another player and scored. 4 defenders in a circle around the ball doing nothing but staring (one of them backpedaling away).
Another hugely annoying this is that on corners you carefully position your guy in the area, then kick, and as soon as you kick the game switches automatically to another random player so you don't know anymore where you are and can't stay on the ball properly.
Obviously they removed the option to regulate the switching of the player you control. Previous games had manual, semi-auto and auto. Now it's just auto.
I always hated it that the AI is playing half of the game. I always have to rely on the AI ... that's why I started this turnbased soccer project where the player can have full control for all of his players

Soccer is strategy and tactics. I hope to get the strategy part right...
Fifa demo out too. Downloading.
I didn't know that PC versions of FIFA are not the same as the console counterparts. That makes no sense to me.
So does PES 11 have any chance against FIFA 2011?
First horrid decision on Fifa 11 demo: the demo only ships with "amateur" difficulty.
So the Fifa demo is totally useless to judge the game. Matches are only 3 minutes and on my first one Chelsea Vs Barcellona I win 6 to 0.
There's no challenge and I seem to play with super powers. I run twice as fast and can basically outrun and dribble everyone, lose the ball, chase the player and steal the ball again.
Technically the game is quite bad. Graphic looks worse than PES11, very choppy replays. But on the other hand the players seem to move less sluggish than FIFA, the game is more responsive, more controls, the players do exactly what you want.
Probably way too easy model. No idea if a decent difficulty makes this game decent.
Was i the only one who came in to this thread thinking that soccer in general had finally gotten decent?
FOOTBALL! Damn, it.
And yes.
Downloading...
Tackles are also too much killer in Fifa. You can basically shoot down the player, take the ball with your hands and run away.
The referee in general is much, MUCH more lenient than in PES.
Updating the thread to say that there's a mod for Fifa demo that ups the difficulty and time of match: http://forum.ea.com/uk/posts/list/6499.page
I'm platform agnostic, but the idea of playing a footie game on the PC makes me cry. They are meant to be played on a comfy sofa with your mates, ideally with real football on an adjacent telly, beer and crisps to hand and a girlfriend tutting in the background.
Also, as previously mentioned, they are usually fucking dreadful ports.
If you have your PC hooked up to your telly, more power to you. It always struck me as being a bit pointless in a world of consoles and games more suited to mouse and keyboard. Playing to strengths and all that.
Anyway, let's not shit this thread up with that tired old console vs. PC proxy war. I'm sure it got flogged to death in some endlessly tedious thread about three years ago. The inferior port thing is usually far more of an issue on the football front.
