Putting the 'Mine' in Minecraft - The Official Qt3 Succession Game

This is it, ladies and gentlemen - what you've all been waiting for. My name is Delta, and I'll the compère tonight. I'm sure you all know the score, I'll pass the save file onto the next person in line, who will continue our noble effort, and pass it on again, and we'll go around and around until we decide to stop.

There's no real goal - a bit of mining, a stronghold, and a farm would be nice to begin with, but even a scale model of Disneyland would be permissible.

Here's who's playing (FROM NOW ON, SADLY, THE GAME IS CLOSED TO NEWCOMERS! PLEASE SEE THE NEW GAME IN THE MAIN FORUM (link to be added))

    Myself
    Marcin
    Skorin
    Eduardo X
    rowe33
    Hrnac
    KiloOhm

So, in the next post, I'll begin. Ahem.

    I've only done a day's work.

I've done less than a day's work. This probably makes me a bad person. I thought it would be interesting if I literally just set us up a teeny tiny base and left the rest for the first round. Generally, we'll be going for two real time days each, but... ah, well.

    Descriptions are below images

So, as you can see here, this map has a lovely bridge. And there's a sort of interesting skyline behind it, which I think warrants exploration when we're a lot better armed. And just to the right of us is...

A little cave. This will do for our first hideout.

I turn around to find the game busily spawning a small farm behind me. This image doesn't really do it justice. They're all bouncing around and appearing out of nowhere.

As I peer into the cave I realise that I perhaps haven't thought this through well enough. It's pretty dark in there, and as anyone who has played minecraft will tell you, dark is not good. Then they'll probably hammer you over the head while repeating it. I have no idea why I've lost two health. Maybe I trod on a pig. I don't know.

It's dark... but - wait, what's that? Is it lava? Is it another opening? There's something down there, and I sure as hell haven't got the balls to find out what it is just yet.

And the Lord said 'Let there be light!', and there was. There was also a brief attempt to brick up the back of the cave, so no monsters could get in. At this stage, it was my primary concern. What you can't see here is a little door in the wall to the right, letting us into that big dark cave when we're ready. Also note the iron and coal on the floor.

I went out to take a scenic photo only to find a pig inside my house. He'd moved before I had a chance to take a photo, but it was strangely prophetic.

Before too long it was night, or at this stage in the game, 'ohshitrunnight'. So I did the manly thing to make up for not exploring the cave, and went out to take a photo. Doesn't it look cosy? It has a door, and everything. The bridge looks nice at night, too.

And, then, with a heart wrenching judder, I was evilly ambushed by a spider and a zombie, clearly working together in some form of nasty coalition. You could see this as an allegory for the British Political System, or not. Anyway, one thing led to another, and by that time I was dead.

No items, all my hearts back. A tragedy. I wandered back to find them waiting for me, my items scattered around, but neatly trapped thanks to a pathing error. And then the zombie caught fire, for reasons I don't fully understand. The spider looked pretty surprised.

And once I'd collected all my items, it didn't seem to bother me. Maybe it thought I'd killed its buddy and was going to set it on fire, too. It was stubbornly sitting on my ham, though. Hm. Could I get it? Should I risk it?

I couldn't. I dashed back inside and watched the spider enviously through the door.

    That's it.

Marcin, you're next. I'll be in contact in a bit. Here are some things to bear in mind:

    • There's a small house.
    • It has coal, and iron.
    • There's a large cave next to it, with a glow at one end.
    • Trees need to be planted.
    • Ham needs to be won.

I like doors. They add an air of security. Sheep seem to be able to bypass them, though, which should be pretty funny.

The only time I've seen sheep get through a door is when I accidentally leave it open when I leave. Also I've never taken shelter in a cave before, in all of my three worlds I always started with building a house from planks. I'm too terrified of running into monsters with no sword and no armor.

I'm pretty sure sheep and pigs spawn in light like undead spawn in the dark. I've noticed them appearing more and more in my underground domain as I've added more torches.

I wouldn't mind being added on to the end of the rotation. It's play for 1 day/night cycle, right?

I'll add you onto the end, of course!

We're playing two real time days, doing as much or little as we want. I did one, just to see what would happen. My house caught fire.

Nice start! Judging by our first house, looks like we drew hobbit class. More interested in food than that precious coal / iron in the house. :)

Testing putting an image up. :)

    Add me as well.

    Are there any rules?

I was thinking maybe we should make a grave yard. So that every time you die you make yourself a grave with a sign that has the date, your name, and a couple of lines about your cause of death.

A spider on the doorstep and a potential host of zombies at the backdoor? Great start!

Fortunately, things turned out better than I thought. First, for an inexplicable reason the spider spun around 3 times and exploded into dust, leaving the precious pork behind. Promptly bagged the victory park! *ahem* It also appears to be a happy pork spawning place ...

I took a quick peek into the darkness behind the cave, and stuck a few torches in. It looked like it was going further into the earth, so I decided to not risk too much right now. Backpedaled and left to take a look around, punching sheep as I go. The punching is quite intentional, as even cloth armor is better than nothing. We are now sporting pants, jacket and fancy sheep hat.

Around this time it started to get dark, so I got started on a landmark for future exploration and grabbed some sand for a future farmhouse. Our lair is on the beach as it were, so ... oh shit what's that. It appears to be a sinkhole - I should probably mark this for future exploration too, as in the fading light it's really easy to miss that there's a hole there. I dug a quick few steps so falling in isn't so catastrophic, then it was time to hightail it inside.

We appear to have iron and coal here, so I'll just excavate that - not much, but enough for, perhaps, a bucket. Or a sword. Or a pick. Well, that last doesn't make sense if we don't find any ore, so maybe I'll just hold on to the ore. Ok, time to start digging - why don't I check the cave first ... oh, that's why. We have an explodey guy at the back of the cave! And sheep.

I think I'll start digging in a direction OTHER than that.

I really dig (haha) how Minecraft does lighting. It just works so well.

    Dear Diary,

Eventful night. Decided to dig away from the moans. Dug straight into hisses instead. Gave up for the night and waited on morning. Upon dawn, ambushed by 3 spiders outside door and died. Must remember to put tombstone up later.

Retrieved stuff without too much trouble, armor nearly gone. Started on greenhouse project.

Decided greenhouse should have tunnel connecting it to main cavern, but worried about the moaning. Struck out anyway, found some iron and coal, mostly dirt. Found more zombies, naturally. I think we're surrounded, at least underground - that blocked-off wall will be there a while I think. Forgot little detail of lights in lighthouse, and upon dropping in to wait out the night in safety behind walls ... ambushed by zombie and died - nowhere to run. Must remember to put up other tombstone.

Retrieved stuff, completed greenhouse. Put 8 seeds down for now, more later.

Put up sign in main cave on the tunnel leading towards greenhouse. Will have to clean that up and put more signs on the false turns ... but then, is there really a point? All they'll says is "zombies this way" "zombies that way" and "yet more zombies".

Instead of wasting time with signs on false turns you could just block them off with earth or sand. That way it's obvious where they are and also that we don't really want to go through them until we have better weapons/armor.

Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Ok, from here on, blocked of hallways mean: hole and cave full of zombies ahead! Because man, there's a LOT of them. The entire beach/hillside is rotten (haha!) with'em.

I'm mostly going to do some maintenance work on the greenhouse, mostly starting with finding more seeds, and then I'll be passing the World to the next player, probably sometime tonight.

I did some basic maintenance around the house. Found 7 more seedlings and stuck them into the farm; looks like irrigation did the trick, as the initial crop is growing now.

Blocked off the discovery digs with stone - if there's stone, assume there's a tunnel and zombies at the end. Also added a couple of tombstones, basically an inverted L shape with a sign at the end of it explaining the cause.

To recap, we have a secure (I hope) farm going, some glass and some iron supplies, and some starter tunnels into quite a few zombie lairs. Most of the time was spent on the starter farm, although there are some tools and supplies in the storage chest for the next player.

    Staff Sergeant, you're next!

    Yeah, the place is infested.

The entrance to the greenhouse is straight towards the back (not too far) and to the right. There should be a sign right on the step up, but I'm guessing it's obscured by the irregularity of the cave back there.

Fuck I had a brown out a while ago and took a break to eat lunch. I come back to find that all of my progress has been lost since my computer hadn't saved the changes in file structure to permanent memory before the power loss, so it's as if I never even extracted the save file to my minecraft folder. That is demoralizing.

The mine system is now hilarious, screenshots would not do it justice. I just dug around where I felt like, following ore veins and avoiding dirt and gravel, and now they are ridiculous catacombs, connecting to each other at random from above and below. We aren't in danger from my random digging though, I made sure if monsters spawn they have no way into the base area. I have enough rocks to get to work on the tower, I just need to select a location for it now. Also before I do that I am going to set a trap outside to see if we can harvest some resources from the monesters that wander around out there.

Eeeexcellent. Our dude may not be a dwarf, but the warren-like maze of twisty passages is a good start :D

A trap! Can't wait to see it.

The trap was a hilarious failure so I started working on my tower. I am currently uploading the video of my trap failing but all I can say is water physics need some work :)
