The first step, IMO, is to get rid of the mossy cobblestone under you so that you can build the walls up, otherwise you WILL get skeletons hopping up and putting arrows into your face while you attempt to grow more trees (the second step).

Sure, white cloth would serve that purpose very well. You could substitute a chest for a mailbox and put a sign into the chest as a "leaflet", and then a makeshift trapdoor inside the house leading to your underground creations...
I once suggested slowly moving topiary mobs that only get you when you stand right next to them.
In the first few hours of the QT3 minecraft server, I went a few screens off in one direction and found a deep but small natural cave that was naturally hidden. Without adding torches, I delved to the bottom and constructed a sign that said "A hollow voice says 'PLUGH'".
I found out about an hour later that sign text hadn't been implemented in multiplayer yet.

Other than Doku's ugly-ass skin? ;)
Uh, the clouds in the upper left look slightly odd with the dark bits? I have no idea.
these blocks are floating on water?.. like if where artificial isles
There appears to be a donkey. Or a monkey. Something light brown anyway.
Disagreed with whoever says ladders are a waste. You only need to put one every couple of blocks and it's a damn quick way to descend.
Oh dear, Minecraft sales are slowing!
1329535 registered users, of which 414069 (31.14%) have bought the game.
In the last 24 hours, 20166 people registered, and 6905 people bought the game.
So at about $12 per copy, he's just about reached $5 million in sales. Not too shabby.
Ok, i keep telling people I'll post pictures of my wood cabin with a full on working chimney. But I can't figure out how to post pictures. Someone wanna help me out.
I did that part, but it seems I'm not allowed to post pictures, I know I don't post alot, but dang I've been around these parts since 2003
Whoops, misunderstood which part you were having trouble with. Hmm, how are you currently trying to post them? Try going to someplace like tinypic.com, uploading it to there, and then using the BBCode it gives you.

Thanks Fugitive, I've never posted pics on a forum before.
Not to belabor the point, but I dug straight down and revealed nothing special. So I then dug down on the other block, which dropped me down while at the same time opening up a channel for lava coming in from the side, setting me on fire. I don't know how I could have seen or avoided that.Originally Posted by Zylon;
Nevertheless, I still use the "straddle two blocks and dig straight down" technique to get down to the nether regions.
Definitely gonna have them when I can find some reeds to make paper with. But I'm quite happy with how the fireplace and chairs turned out.
Aye, looks cozy. Brick might work better (clay is found plus or minus 2 levels from ocean top, along sandy beaches, cook clay balls into brick).

Warning that clay can sometimes be hard to find. Take a boat and compass and plan to be out for day or two, just in case.
Edit: Nice-looking cabin.
that's not how it works for me Pogo. I cook the balls (Sounds funny doesn't it) and turn them into bricks. I turn the clay balls into blocks for easier transport.
Woops, that's right. Edited.
To get to bedrock I just go down and forward laying half-block steps as I go. It takes a little longer, but it safe and a hell of a lot easier to get out.
Taking stacks of dirt with you to the bottom should guarantee you a pretty quick and easy return trip to the surface, with less energy and resource waste. And as for that lava thing Charlatan mentioned, that's pretty rare in my experience. Edit: As in, hasn't happened to me yet after having made many such trips.
Heh, if he waits long enough, he'll get a monster spawn on that chimney that will then fall into the fire (and take like two freakin hours to die).
I've fallen into a deep cave, it's pitch black and I don't have any tools with me to dig my way out... so annoying. Thought I was gonna have to restart everything but I found the save editor :)

I had the same thing happen to me, but I persevered with mighty perseverance and managed to dig my way out. The hole I fell in was on a bit of a hill so I dug (bare handed) horizontally and emerged quite a distance from the hole.
I was pretty frustrated when I fell in but that was offset by the sense of accomplishment I had when I *finally* broke through and saw sun light after what had to be a couple of game days later.
