I also can't find any caverns. I made a 4x6 main tunnel which moves down one every three levels, until I hit adminium. No caverns. Then I picked seven or eight spots and dug 4x4 holes from the surface down into that tunnel. No caverns. Then I choose random spots in the tunnel and dug 2x1 tunnels horizontally in multiple directions.

    No caverns.

Bought this last night and have pretty much been playing it non-stop since. Was in a world on normal difficulty, but I only saw two mobs in a few hours of play. Also managed to find a zombie spawner. Restarted on a new map on hard and I was getting lots of mobs for awhile, in fact I have a half blown up wooden house right by the ocean where a creeper scared the crap out of me. Started two projects, one being a glass skywalk which connects my mountain fortress to another mountain and the second is a massive watchtower with a spiraling staircase. Unfortunately, all the mobs have seemed to disappear, I can run outside at night and not see any which has put a damper on the whole experience. I love stumbling onto caves, found an awesome one with a river that went pretty deep.

Think it's just a random thing - i've had maps with crap caverns, and i've had maps with awesome caverns. In general, i keep spawning worlds until i get something i like - usually something with pretty mountainous terrain. Then, i just start exploring...I found it's better to find a good cave network first, and then build on it, rather than dig randomly and hope you hit something. When you do have a good cave network, start listening for sounds(water, monsters) that aren't in your cave to give you guidance where to dig next...also, make sure you look up and explore any small dark crannies - I've opened up huge caverns because i saw one dark corner behind a waterfall...

Yeah the amount of childhood drama that's been produced over this game is frightening. It makes the SA thread and a lot of the official boards almost unreadable.

And this is why I think the people who keep mewling for multiplayer are insane.

Notch updated his blog with details about the accidental stress test last night. He claims the server is still running and getting 3-5 login attempts per second (probably my son clicking the "Multiplayer" button non-stop).

Looks we'll be able to run the Minecraft server on just about any dusty old rig:

Memory usage on an infinite map, with all players being far away from each other, is about 35 MB/player. That means you could in theory host a server for 28 players with 1 GB ram. In reality, the server uses some overhead ram that varies with how many entities there are, how fast players are moving (the map generator), and how many monsters there are and what they’re doing (more when they’re pathfinding), so it’s probably more like 20-24 players maximum per 1GB of ram, for an infinite server.

I don't understand what happened in that video. Why were the people building the village/town thing asspies?

Because they were cooperating and sharing and having fun but Little Billy didn't care for that kind of play...so he brought flint & tinder to the sandbox.

More succinctly, because the creator of the video does not understand irony.

I'm sure multiplayer will have various servers with different rules. Personally I think if they can get the right monster mix going it'll be quite cool. Right now the monsters are few and easy to kill or contain. They need a monster which digs and can get over/through walls.

That guy is an ass and a prime example why I usually hate multi player in general. Because one dick can ruin the fun for everyone else. Lets hope we can run private servers with Passwords.

I hope it's actually more complex than just fencing in who's on the server. I read something where a person mentioned using gold to buy land - I don't know whether that was real or just a flight of fancy, but if you could buy space and have "ownership" over the blocks so other people couldn't mess with them, as well as communal land that is more open, I think people might enjoy that even with dicks around (since there always are).

It's called land claim flags. That's the debate going on. Some have proposed making them out of gold. It's all speculation and too early to make any progress on the proper solution.

Make sure you RIGHT click, not left click. Left click will just dig up the dirt, right click will tear up the grass on top and till the land.

Just found this large network of caves, I haven't seen one of this size for a while:

This is at the bottom roughly looking at where I took the first shot from:

A smaller cavern that is to the left of the main cavern:

    Whoah!

Speaking of, I finally found my first underground cavern last night. Took a lot of randomly digging around but the sound of running water finally tipped me off. What a terrifying feeling it is to leave a safe and controlled passage behind to enter the unknown like that.

I actually ended up at the base of the cavern, rather than from above or the side as I had been fearing, which makes it a little easier. It seems this game really plays with my phobias of massive, dark empty spaces.

Wow, huge. Everything I've found so far has been small corridor-like chambers.

The best one had a 4-way branch in the middle that filled me (rightfully so) with terror and made me check behind my back every 2 seconds, but still mostly corridors. Must dig deeper!

Yeah he's a jerk for sure but he didn't really do much damage. He burned maybe 3 minutes worth of work and that is only because they built with wood based materials. If you use stone they'd have to dig through it all which takes time. Getting mass TNT isn't easy either. Building stuff in comparison is quite fast if you have extra materials which amass fairly fast. My main concern is there really isn't much to do except build since the monsters are fairly easy once you build some.

I did some splunking and found about 500 slimes literally and killed most of them, that was fun. I am lucky I brought wood with me as I had to craft more weapons and picks. I found about 12 diamond and a bunch of other stuff after an hour of exploring underground. I also am having more luck with monster spawns occasionally and fought a big battle. About 5 skeletons, a few creepers and a few zombies. Mass skeletons are hard and I died a bunch.

Going down the screenshots, first is the aftermath of the night battle, you can see 6 enemies burning in the sunlight from this POV alone, and like 2-3 creepers still standing around. I could have hid and been safe easily but I wanted to try and kill everything. I kept dying to mass skeletons. Next my staircase 4x4 going down in a spiral, replacing it slowly with all glass. Third screenshot is too many slimes after you go down a bit, you can hear them in the stair case like crazy after a while, a huge cave system is packed with them. Then last just some random stuff I have in one chest, look at all the slime balls I collected. When you kill slimes with swords they usually don't leave anything but I ran out of swords and killed a bunch the old fashioned way.

In my mine near the bedrock level I can hear a ton of slimes hopping around, but I think I'm underneath them. Are those slimeballs useful?

The Dwarves dug too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazud-dum... shadow and darkness.

pg, just so you know, gold swords barely do anything. They're worse, AFAIK, than stone swords. The same is true for any gold tool. Meaning gold is useless ATM.

Ah, well I thought it was upgrade over stone, but I guess not. I used the diamond sword quite a bit after I made it and it killed everything very easily. It took out big slimes in 2-3 hits without them leaving any smaller versions.
