I figure this is a new start due to a lot of players missing the round of sixteen.

I also don't include round of sixteen in the following group round round-up. The results didn't really change anyway.
    RESULTS FROM THE GROUP ROUND:
    Anders Hallin 27
    Buceph 25
    Hunty 24
    Phil_Stein 23
    Lloyd Heilbrunn 23
    Wader 23
    balut 22
    Ryan A 22
    Greedo 21
    Russ 21
    GloriousMess 21
    playingwithknives 21
    CSL 20
    sinfony 20
    Juan Rayo 19
    bandidoquest 19
    Tim Partlett 19
    caesarbear 18
    Mr_PeaCH 18
    Alan Dunkin 17

Uruguay - Ghana - bit of a mystery to me I've missed all their games so far but I want an African team to progress so I'm going with Ghana

Netherlands - Brazil - It's about time Holland did something but seeing as there's mutterings of camp bust ups I'm going with Brazil

Argentina - Germany - Two teams who supposedly can't defend worth a damn but think Argentina can score more so Diego it is.

Paraguay - Spain - I'm sticking with the Spain.

Uruguay - Ghana - I want to see an African team in the semi finals.
Netherlands - Brazil - This is a brave choice on my behalf, because after all it's Brazil but the Dutch have been solid and Holland is my favourite country.

    10/07/03
Argentina - Germany - This should be the final. Can go either way but the edge is on the Argies.
Paraguay - Spain - I have Paraguay in my work sweepstake and can win 90 quid if they win the tournament. If Spain win I'll still be happy, as they knocked out the team that has Ronaldo in it.

It's a pity I forgot to predict the previous round and a couple of matches, as my score isn't bad seeing I know little about football and picked most of them at random.

If people skipped round of 16 then how were results the same?

Well, not same-same, but basically a quarter or so actually put their picks in. It certainly changed the internal order, but most importantly, I was still on top :P

I'm sorry to have dropped the ball on the wrap up of the group play picks thread. We went out of town on Thursday and I brought my laptop with the intention of posting/updating as the last games in group play finished up. Unfortunately, there wasn't any internet or even cell phone reception!

So: belatedly, I'm sorry that picks thread went out with a whimper rather than a bang.

I really like Germany in this World Cup, KD Lang is amazing.

Okay, this is what is going to happen in the World Cup this weekend. Mock me now or praise me later, this is gonna happen! Uruguay will beat Ghana, the Netherlands will kick Brazil to the curb, Germany will make Argentina look like little children with bad hair and Spain will squeak out a win against Paraguay.

I totally didn't get in on any of the others, so this feels a bit awkward, but:

    10/07/02
    Uruguay - Ghana
    Netherlands - Brazil

    10/07/03
    Argentina - Germany
    Paraguay - Spain

I don't know... Kinda has a bit of a Vincent Cassel thing going, too. It's in the eyes.

No matter who you think he looks like, (because let's be honest, he is an odd looking dude), the guy can frikken DESTROY a defending backline, I would love to have this guy on any team I support. Somehow I have become a fan of Germany, I don't understand it myself.

Netherlands - Brazil - I'd rather Netherlands to win it but I think Brazil is too much..

    10/07/03
Argentina - Germany - Suspect Argentina will take it but I like this young German team.
Paraguay - Spain - Maybe in penalties Paraguay has a hope..

I want Ghana to win but Uruguay look far more potent in nearly every area. Plus Ghana are without Kevin Prince-Boateng, who's been a key player for them throughout.

I have a feeling that Holland-Brazil will be a total snoozefest, given the defensive nature of their play so far. Brazil have looked very incisive on the break though, whilst Holland have struggled to break down even average sides - they fluked it against Japan thanks to a howler, for example.

Maradona's got a lot of beef on the grill, but he also has Gutierrez, Heinze and ultra-rubs DeMichelis at the back, who makes John Terry look like Bobby Moore. Could go either way, and should be lots of goals given the Germans aren't exactly stalwarts either, but I fancy them against that ramshackle back one and a half.

The only reason anyone wants Paraguay to stay in is to perv on Larissa Riquelme. They are boooooring. I fully expect them to not venture from their half, with Spain eventually scraping a 1-0 in an almost exact rerun of the Portugal game.

It's a bastardisation of a Maradonaism I have been desperately looking for opportunities to use. I was getting at the point that generally Maradona has been going all out and essentially playing five all-out attacking players with only the barest semblance of a traditional midfield. So, without wanting to labour the point, Tevez, Di Maria, Messi et al are a whole lot of beef. Seems to have been working so far. Not sure how it'll do against Germany.
