I haven't watched much of anything since the Archer season finale but I saw this thread and checked out Louie because I enjoy his stand up so much. I too was laughing my ass off during ep4. My stomach literally hurt. Great show!
BTW when did it become OK to be so raunchy on TV? I love it.
FX has renewed Louis for 13 more episodes!
And........gay
holy shit the latest episode. holy shit.
My family suddenly looks normal after episode 7!
(I hope the characters were not based on his real family :)
His mom did in fact come out to him as a lesbian, or at least she did if his stand-up is to be believed. I believe he said his reaction was similar to what it was in the show. At least the "I don't give a shit" part.
Man that last episode was good. I wasn't exactly sure what was going to happen as he followed that kid home.
It's so good I give it no chance of being renewed :P
As Cyrano mentioned upthread, it's already been renewed:

Good news, and pretty rare news!
Dude, the banana in the dentist's scene this week . . . while it was happening I started groaning and going "oh my god, I bet . . . " and yep, holy shit. That was some crazy stuff this week.
If possible, the stand up he is doing on the show is even raunchier than his regular stand up stuff, except of course he can't curse.
Starting not to like this show. I really didn't like the bully episode - I want to laugh, not be taught life lessons when Louis CK is on my screen. And I only got partway into the dentist one before shutting it off. I dunno, I think he's just not destined to ever head up a sitcom. He was good on Parks & Recreation but maybe that was because he had a supporting role.
It's funny, because when that scene started I was irritated because it was Stephen Root. One of the things I like about Louie is that it's filled with actors I don't know or comedians playing themselves, so it feels very real. But I know Stephen Root as an actor, so having him in the scene sort of pulled me out.
And then the scene plays out, which I won't spoil except to say... dude. And then I wondered if they got Stephen Root to be the dentist because they didn't want to completely destroy some newcomers career by having him play that role.
God I love this show.
Riiiiiiiiiiight. (to WarrenM's post)
Yeah, that makes a bit of sense. I'm not sure how the acting world works though, but I'd bet if you land your first gig on cable TV as "The Raping Dentist" you're not typecast. I mean hell, Stephen Root couldn't have played a bigger variety of characters throughout his career.
I love Stephen Root. But he didn't stick out any worse than Ricky Gervais did!
I'm still loving the show. I thought the Bully thing was great. The whole time he's following the kid there's that crazy tension. Is he gonna confront him again once he's alone? Or even jump him? No, he tells on the kid to his parents. Insane! And then things go sideways with the mother, but then he has that great moment with the father. It's just crazy, brave unexpected writing.
I think this show is just not for me. That whole bully sequence just felt like an after school special from the 80s to me - mean kid is mean because his parents were mean. *shrug* Probably going to cancel this season pass unless the next episode is stellar.
In thinking about it, I think I'm wanting the wrong things from this show. I want Louis CK to be funny. I don't want him doing serious stuff and I don't want him trying to act. I want him to talk about his kids, family life and aging since those subjects are where his stand up really shines. Sure, do some skits because the bits with his kids and the thing with his mother were funny. Trying to solve the mystery behind why the mean kid humiliated him in front of his date in a serious manner is ... I guess it's not what I want to see is all. That could be anyone in that role.
As a divorced father of two young children, the show is painfully, hilariously accurate.
While I haven't been raped by a dentist, I have, like Louie, utterly failed picking up women with small talk, and utterly and humiliatingly failed at the follow up 'romantic gesture' . . .
I've loved this show up to this point, but I kept waiting for last night's episode to be funny. Though it's nice to see that he has free range to experiment a bit with the show's format, I really do watch the show to see Louis C.K., and he was barely in it yesterday.
Though the show was definitely creepy for having Tom Noonan in it, since the last thing I saw him in was House of the Devil.
I thought the end with the handy man nailing Jesus back on the cross pretty funny. And the whole image of the young Louie trying to save and comfort the wooden Jesus was pretty endearing.
Louie is back in a few weeks, thank fucking god. In the meantime, a pretty good piece in New York Magazine giving a little behind the scenes action. A small bit of analysis and interview, but mostly process:

Have expressed concerns about show's ability to be consistently entertaining upthread already, but having recently been exposed to modern Chuck Lorre comedies (due to circumstances beyond my control), can definitely appreciate Mr. CK's take on modern network comedy feeling too tightly wound up and overpolished.
Happy for him for having attained the kind of creative control he has, in any case.

I love this show.
I don't know if I've posted about this before, but while I enjoy Louie, I don't know that I think it's funny per se. I enjoy it, but I think it's probably more interesting than it is good.
Whenever I think about it, it reminds me of the old Kids in the Hall sketch, about the dreary sausage factory. It's the same kind of thing. There's no "joke", really. There's some absurdity, but it's such mundane absurdity that I sort of don't know what to make of it. It feels bleak more than it does humorous. And yet, there's something compelling about it. It's like an anti-sitcom.
As a 40 year old single father of a 12 year old and 9 year old . . . every episode is chock full of comedy to me.
