There's Bulletstorm.
Nope. Just not as big a deal. If you want to break some story about how the military is running a secret torture prison that violates the Geneva convention and so on, yeah, that seems worth running via anonymous sources. A video game announcement? You can probably hold that one under your hat and it won't hurt anyone. Are you really going to say that video game journalism is somehow unique and special?
Likewise, talking about it won't really hurt anyone since it's 'just a videogame'. :)A video game announcement? You can probably hold that one under your hat and it won't hurt anyone.
I see the smiley, but that's not at all what I'm saying. I'm saying that some things are worth breaking via anonymous sources and some things are not.Likewise, talking about it won't really hurt anyone since it's 'just a videogame'. :)
I just watched the premier on Jimmy Fallon, and I feel embarrassed to be into games, once again. We all yammer on and on about wanting mainstream acceptance, but when you put most of today's popular core games on a stage next to the worlds of movies and music and other genuinely grown up forms of entertainment, you just can't help but feel childish. I have respect for Cliff because he's frank about his desire to make popcorn shooters, and I can think of no other programmer with the balls to walk onto that stage and sit in front of a real audience. He did a fine job! But I really didn't want this to be our big premiere on network television.
As I was watching, I really wanted to lean over to Greta Gerwig and tell her, first, that I hear her movie is great and can't wait to see it, and second, that games don't have to be this way. We can do philosophy, and history, the occasional well-written story or character relationship. It's not all grim and bloody and boobs and monsters and wrestlers in space. We've got some really novel and imaginative stuff, honest! We can be more than this.
Unfortunately, it seems like more stories use unjustified anonymous sources than justified. Obviously important stories get broken by anonymous sources but I can think of far more, far too many more, when it's led to sensationalism with no accountability. It's pretty sad to think that you've got to take any breaking story with a pinch of salt these days.
And to get this slightly more on-track with gaming, it's good to see gaming journalism try and become more like mainstream journalism but, unfortunately, they're emulating all the worst aspects of it.
And even more on-track: I'll play Gears 3 (G3ars?) but, at this point, I'm not excited about it.
The beard on Dom is a nice touch. It's an angst multiplier.
I think they're trying too hard to recreate the magic of that Mad World ad for the first game. Their subsequent moody indie rock over somber cinematic trailers have really fallen flat. It's like a marketing ploy that peaked in high school.
Sun Kil Moon is an unexpected, but welcome, choice though.
Wow, not only is Anya wearing body armour but she's also capping grub! That should make Hugin happy!
I really like the Gears 3 trailer. I appreciate the slow-mo and somber music mixed with the over the top battlefield action.
God I'm so sick of those guns, cross hairs, sounds, controls...wow I'm just not looking forward to another expansion pack that's labelled as a sequel. I'm just burned out on this "series".
Damn, who kicked your dog?
I know, right? Usually I'm a positive person and mama taught to not say anything bad...but this time I had to say it!
It's a tremendous game...for 2006. I can't help but think what awesomeness they could've created if they didn't just stick with same formula because I think it's a very talented developer.
They didn't stick with the same formula though. I didn't like Gears of War much at all. But Gears of War 2 has one of the best game modes of all time. Granted, I have not played the single player campaign very far, so you might be right about that. But I can't help it. Any time I start playing the campaign, I regret it because all I can think is: I could be playing Horde mode instead.
The second game has a great campaign as well. Lots of variety, decent challenges, and very tight mechanics.
Plus a bunch of dudes built like brick shithouses carrying around machine guns with chainsaw bayonets. I think the Gears games are the best B movies I have ever played.
I agree. 4 player co-op alone makes Gears 3 worth it for me. Besides horde the other thing I love about Gears 2 is that they included bots for all multiplayer modes. It makes playing with 4 or 5 other people so much better when you can fill out the games with bots. I really wish Halo and Bad Company did this.
Agreed. I discovered this when they had the 15 days of Gears competition thingie where you had to play a different mode of Gears every night. And that's when me and my brother discovered that even though we were playing solely for the competition, we had a blast every night in each of the game modes because we just filled the rest of the team with bots. So even just two of us had a great time in team matches.
I was completely unexcited about this until I read about the 4-player co-op. There just aren't enough games that have that.
Also, wouldn't it have made more sense for Cliff to be on TV next year right before the game is released? That's when they have the movie stars on.
I LOVE the new trailer-this from a huge fan of the trailers from the first two games. The changes sound really good and just the other day I was thinking about playing these games again. I read a sample from one of the recent books and it was pretty entertaining.
Looking forward to this one Warren!
I sure hope they fix/improve the checkpoint system for the next one, because I'm playing through GOW2 co-op right now and it has the worst checkpoint system I've ever seen. If you are going to take out save anywhere, you can't have have so damn far apart.
