Hey, you should post a rebuttal to that grumpy guy on the front page!

Is it just me or does this look MUCH better than the previous Gears games? I've really been blown away by the graphics and lighting, so many moments where you just have to stop and appreciate it. Amazing stuff. Definitely one of the best-looking games I've ever seen on a console.

Also I'd forgotten how much fun Horde mode is. What a blast, especially with all the new additions. Got to lvl35 on the beach level with a five-man group last night and it was just wall-to-wall awesome, can't wait to play a lot more. Is there a GAF friends Gamertag I should know about? I can see myself playing a lot of Horde.

In other Gears news I tried playing in 3D. The 3D effect works well but it makes the game too dark overall, it's too hard to see stuff that you really need to see, especially in a firefight, and you just don't get to appreciate the beauty of the graphics nearly as much. Am I the only one who's been trying to play this in 3D? I feel like the depth effect is worth it but the dim colors are an issue. Someone suggested turning up in-game brightness, has anyone had luck finding settings that work well for them in 3D?

I feel that Gears 2 was the gold standard for these type of modes and now with 3 they have set the bar higher. A lot of other games have had similar modes whether zombies, firefight, etc. but none of the other games really nail it like Gears does.

It really is amazing how you can ship multiple games on the same console and each time it gets better looking! Gears3 really does make a large leap though ... Lightmass alone is enough to blow the first 2 games away.

Tech gets better, artists get more familiar with the engine, etc. Everyone wins!

I do think it looks better than most 360 games I've seen, but lately I've been playing on the PC again after having mostly not touched it in years. I can't wait for console games to finally be true 1920x1080 instead of upscaled. Throw in AA while you're at it and I'm good to go.

It's the best looking 360 game I've seen in awhile, but it's ugly compared to what I've been playing the last month.

(I play mostly 360, this isn't a PC elitest rant, honest!)

Which is what? If you say Deus Ex, your opinion is void. :)

Red Orchestra 2 and Dead Island fwiw. Both are kinda low on graphics for pc, but still better than the 360 simply because of 1920x1080 and aa.

(though I did also play Deus Ex on PC last month. :P )

getting a bit frustrated with versus mode though. it's nothing but roll-roll-shotgun-roll-shotgun-shotgun, which was what gow 1 felt like and why I skipped 2. :(

horde and beast are fun, but I'm a competitive mp guy and it hurts to see it limited this way.

Those guys can be stopped, you just have to use different tactics. Retro lancer has huge stopping power, for example.

Yeah man, Gears is actually surprisingly not very run-and-gun. Those shotgunners are easily taken down with ranged weapons. ProTip: getting shot with the Lancer / Retro / Hammerburst slows your movement, basically making shotgunners dead in the water if they're running at you.

OK, well, not sure what to tell you. If they're running/rolling at you and you start shooting them, they will get stopped in their tracks. If they're getting at you some other way ... well, learn to compensate somehow. :)

Don't go into aiming mode with the retro lancer.

when they get shot, they do indeed stop their roll, but they are then able to go ahead and pull the trigger on the shotgun and it's all over. In addition I think a large part of the frustration with the shotgun is the fact that it gibs you more often than not which eliminates revives.

Sounds like you might be waiting too long to start firing at an opponent. The lancers have a surprising range and do a large amount of damage no matter how far away the opponent is.

Something that irks me about the game: you have a new female character, went to the trouble of having her voiced by Claudia Black, and the only reason why I know her name is because she got in my line of fire and "Sam" popped up. They don't bother to say her name at all (that I heard).

Yeah, it's not right when you first meet her, but multiple times throughout the first level with her.

Yes, I remembered that her name is said when you split up, but that's still a good hour or so after seeing her for the first time. For clarity's sake, I'm only just past the stadium. It still feels like she's going to die because she doesn't get an actual introduction, or just a tiny bit sexist and a whole lot of lazy in the writing.

I don't think she's been under developed at all, actually.

    Semi Spoilerish, I guess?

    Spoiler: semi spoilery

She obviously has a thing for Dom. She's from a different place and has a very playful relationship with Baird. It really doesn't get much deeper than that in the Gears universe.

Sam's my favorite character personally. Also, listening to outtakes of Claudia Black's audio while hooking up her multiplayer callouts: possibly my favorite part of gears development :)

kill stuff faster ;) If you're getting killed by rolling shotgunners, you're doing it too slowly!

Finished the single player last night. That's it? Still a lot of questions left open for me on the story.

    There's a story?

    lolz!

Oh, hey, the Hammerburst has a zoomed in mode O.o I'm doing much better now :p

Seriously shitty manual. I guess all the instructions are in the Campaign, which I have thus far avoided.

Wha, really? I felt like it wrapped up the major beats of the story pretty neatly. To the spoiler tags!

    Spoiler: thpoilerth
The origin of the Locust isn't explicitly spelled out, but it seems pretty damn obvious to me that they're some kind of genetic experiment gone wrong. Myrrah's "Don't you see the best of yourselves in us?" taunt at the end, etc.
