    FRAPS instroduces cached recording

    http://www.fraps.com/news.php

Fraps 3.2 brings a new feature for registered users - loop recording, constantly capture the previous 30 seconds of video.
To start the buffering press and hold the video capture hotkey for a second. The Fraps counter will turn pink to show that video is being cached. When you want to save the action simply tap the capture hotkey and the recording will continue as normal (including the previous 30 seconds of footage).
    Never miss a moment again.
Not sure what the frame rate hit will be, but this sure is a nice addition.

$37? Ouch. It's been a file since I've looked at FRAPS and I'd always thought it was $20 or less.

Wow, I bought a license for (I think) $10 like 8 years ago. It gave me a lifetime of free upgrades.

Yeah, I went and checked, I paid $37 for my copy in Mar 2007. It's not too bad, considering they allow you to keep getting the upgrades for several years. And I got some personal help from the developers in getting it to work with DOSbox.

It's been the same price forever. I also paid $37 back in June of 2007 :-P

Seems like a lot, but well, there's no other program out there that does what Fraps does nearly as efficiently, reliably, or easily. Guess it kinda deserves to be able to charge that.

Xfire introduced video recording a while back, but I'm not sure how well that works compared to Fraps. Xfire does have the neat auto-upload feature though, where you can take screenshots/video while playing a game, and then immediately upon exiting the game it'll give you an option to upload to your public Xfire account. You can stream games live using Xfire too.

So I registered the full version last night and tried out the buffering function. It works pretty well, actually, about 10fps better while recording than the free version.

Interestingly it locks the framerate at 30 while buffering. And I'm used to ~45fps during play, so 30 feels on the edge of choppy. I dropped my resolution from 1650x1080 down to 1440x900 and the fps remained at 30 while buffering.

So I'm happy with it. Whenever I'm about to do something exciting I'll start buffering.

The game plays at whatever frame rate you're recording at. Lower details or a faster machine won't make games run faster than 30fps if you lock Fraps to record at 30fps.
