Recommend me some civil rights era histories

Having finished Perlstein's Before the Storm and Nixonland I'm interested in more about civil rights era/rise of the modern GOP books. I'm not super interested in biographies, more in analysis of the events that occurred. Bonus points if the civil rights stuff compares and contrasts with modern gay rights struggles.

So, anyone read anything good in that vein lately?

The Race Beat, about the newspapermen who covered the civil rights struggle is pretty much pure amazing because it talks about how these grand events were covered for most of america and it largely wasn't pretty.

The three-volume series from Taylor Branch is absolutely fantastic. Warning: each volume is a 1000 pages. No, that's not a typo.

If you're willing to invest the time, you'll be blown away by how good they are.
