The Great Canadian Punk Rock Thread

What can I say? Spring makes me want to play some of the punk rock.

"I wanna go to New York City, I just know it's the place for me..."
The Demics - New York City

"I've been drinkin', but drinkin' doesn't make me... feeeeeeeeeeeel alright."
Slow - Have Not Been The Same

"You can call it whatcha like! Come on, stand up for your rights!"
    D.O.A. - General Strike

    "HEY!" PS: Best video ever.
    The Gruesomes - Hey!

"A pillow and a coffin's just as nice as a bed..."
Forgotten Rebels - Fuck Me Dead

"Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah..."
Dayglo Abortions - ARGH FUCK KILL / Die Sinner Die!

"I lie to myself and to my friends too! If I want your girl, I'll lie to you too!"
Subhumans - Slave To My Dick

Sadly, I couldn't find any Dik Van Dikes on YouTube, so you'll have to trust me that "The Birthday Song" by The Dik Van Dikes is totally awesome.

This probably should go into the best covers thread. Toby Swann, on his own after the Battered Wives did an awesome cover of Over the Rainbow from Lullabies in Razorland.

And because we have to apologize for giving the world Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne, we'd like to make it up with Gob and I Hear You Calling. Zombie cheerleaders is a compelling recipe for awesome.

Dick Lucas - who I think that's a picture of - was in the UK Subhumans, not the Canadian Subhumans.

Do Constantines get to be called punk rock?

    Because they're pretty much spectacular.

I can see where you're coming from on that, but punk vs. new wave can be an awfully fine hair to split. I would say the line gets drawn somewhere around Martha and the Muffins.

I think given their role in the growth of the Canadian punk scene (and particularly the Toronto punk scene in the late 70s and early 80s with bands like Teenage Head and the Viletones), plus the "Waking Up Tired" singalong in Hard Core Logo, these guys earned some pretty solid punk rawk stripes.

And it's a great song, wherever you think they lie on the spectrum. :)

Yes, I can certainly agree on that. It is indeed a great song.

Woah, woah, woah. You're talking Canadian punk bands and no one has brought up PROPAGHANDI!?

Search for "Hate, Myth, Muscle, Etiquette" on YouTube.

Good call. Propaghandi gets bonus points for having ties to The Weakerthans, who aren't really punk but who are really, really, really good.

I'd also like to recommend that people check out Hostage Life. Their album "Walking Papers", which featured the single This Song Was Written By A Committee is probably my favourite punk album since Rancid's ...And Out Come The Wolves.

Hostage Life is a killer band! Or, I guess they were. They broke up last November :( Their last album was released for free: Hostage Life - Centre of the Universe I love what they were going to use as the cover art.

Aww, dammit, I didn't know they broke up. Didn't know about the free album though - great find! Thanks for the link. I'm downloading now.

The last Propagandhi album, Supporting Caste, is one of the best albums from 2009. It's amazing how much I've listened to it since it released, especially considering how little punk and hardcore I listen to these days.

Maybe it's wrong... but The Hockey Song sung by The Hanson Brothers Band is awesome.
