Meaning what? We're talking about a school trying to be a national football independent when there are only like three others doing it and there are questions about how long those schools can keep going. And BYU's network is geared towards promoting the Mormon faith, not getting people to watch BYU football.
There have been several good articles written about the real issues BYU trying to be an independent in football would face. Notre Dame, Navy, and Army can pull it off to the degree that they've been independents for decades and have national followings and long term rivalries. Does BYU have that? Will schools schedule them, especially late in the season? Who exactly are their natural rivals that can form the core of their annual schedule the way a Notre Dame has traditon with schools like Michigan, USC, Navy, and Boston College? Utah, Utah State, and some other WAC or MWC traditional rival is nowhere near the same value.
Well, again, rumor I heard was that the move was a prelude to an invite from the Big XII or somethin'. In that context, it makes more sense to me.
Why would they need to go independent before joining the Big 12? Why not just jump conferences like everyone else did? Besides, I hear that BYU and its unwillingness to play sports on Sunday is a deal-breaker with the Big 12.
Dunno. Haven't really been paying any attention. I do know that BYU and Texas quickly started talks about a 3-game series, though.
Only reason I'd heard it would make sense to join the Big XII was because the Big XII allows schools to have their own networks. So it'd work as a "Colorado replacement" pretty well. BYU may not be ND, but they're certainly bigger than CU.
And you wouldn't believe the wishful-thinking pipe dream I'd heard for a replacement for NU.
Yep. That's the rumor I'd heard -- due to the strong relationship between Texas' and ND's administrations and the Big XII's lax rules about having your own TV network contracts.
But I think it's absolute bullshit.
IN OTHER NEWS...
Most of the individuals who started up Rivals.com's recruiting (esp. Bobby Burton) have gotten sick of Yahoo!, left, and opened shop right down the street with most of the exact same guys that initially made Rivals great: http://247sports.com/
They're just starting up, but they've already been reporting like crazy. The only have about a dozen affiliate sites up (Texas, A&M, Georgia, etc.) so far, but they seem to be getting the best of the best for each one (e.g., Jeff Howe and Gerry Hamilton for Texas' site).
Anyway... the point is, all the best guys are going to 247sports.com. Go there for your favorite college sports news.
Full disclosure: Bobby Burton was my brother's roommate in college

My favorite Sooner forum joined up with 247. In the next couple days they are going to move the forums over. I've visited a few of the other 247 sites that are already up, and I'm not a fan of them, honestly. Pretty much everyone else on the forum is saying the same thing, they much prefer the current setup.
Of course, this is just speaking of the forum setup, I'm not paying member, so the paying members may be preferring change because they will be getting better stuff for their money.
See, this is what I keep hearing from Longhorn fans... it's like the best of the best who do UT coverage have teamed up to form 247. Only guy who could probably make the whole deal better is Chip Brown.
Which forum is that, anyway?
Well, remember they're still writing the code for the forums as they speak. In the next couple days they are going to move the forums over. Though I've already spoken my mind to 'em about the forums -- in short, I'm surprised they didn't just grab one of the fine off-the-shelf forum software programs that already exist. I also don't know why they're building it using ASP and IIS. Well, I actually do know why for both; it's just that I don't agree with either decision.
ESPN Promo spot with Mack and Nick. Hungry Hippos, baby! It's ON!
Not really college football, but, ouch...

It ties for this play last year

They are separating Ohio State and UM? WTF? Why?
But they'll still play every year. I wish they'd keep it the last game of the year though. The game can make or break a season for both teams, and week after week the anticipation would build.
Not sure how fair it is timing wise, but the NCAA decided Masoli can't play this year at Ol' Miss after all. Oh, and BYU did end up declaring that they are going independent on football while putting the rest of their sports in the WCC. Nice knowing you, WAC.
Kickoff tonight will be a blessed relief. The signal will drown out the noise from all those lesser regions of the country we heard about during the summer.
That Pitt/Utah game looks entertaining. Now I just have to remember what channel Versus is on.
I actually love matchups like Pitt-Utah, beats the hell out of suffering through the South Carolina game on ESPN. Small conference teams are awesome to watch sometimes.
Ole Miss appealed the Masoli ruling and won. He's eligible to play this season, and could play tomorrow.
As much as Masoli's actions seem to have justified being forced to sit out a year, it was pointed out that the NCAA has not required that in comparable but not as high profile cases. So making him sit out a year was probably unfair.
He played, yes. Ummm...it did not end well. Not really his fault per se, though.
Auburn is going to break my heart again this year.
Not sure what to think about Alabama. At least I don't have to be afraid of Tebow this year.
To jerri:
By going undefeated and not getting a chance to play for the MNC? I can't imagine anything worse than that, and auburn has done it twice. I don't think you'll have to worry about that this year, though. ;)
Great opening weekend in college ball so far, most of the big names took care of business in style, Florida and Texas struggled (in style points) but will probably be fine as the season progresses.
I have no idea what will happen next week when my Vols face an Oregon team that ran up 72 points on a hapless opponent...I guess I hope we aren't also a hapless opponent. I like our chances though, my SEC bias knows no bounds.
QT3 college football fans, we are slacking in updating this thread. I could almost tolerate a Rimbo post at this point.
Nebraska's opener was interesting to watch. Last year's biggest strength, the stellar defense, looked very sloppy and soft. Even a second rate foe like Western Kentucky was able to put up 300+ yards of offense on us. That's more than some ranked teams were putting on us last year.
On the other hand the freshman sensation QB, Taylor Martinez, is everything the hype promised. Which is quite surprising considering the amount of hype. His passing game was good, if not stellar, but that's above average for a freshman QB. On designed runs or scrambles, on the other hand, he's a beast. His third ever play as a Nebraska QB was a 46 yard scamper for the endzone. He's both fast and elusive. On one of his TD scrambles in the game he scored despite three different defenders making contact with him. The idea of Nebraska with a true dual threat QB to give defenders fits gives me tingly feelings in my happy place.
A lot of teams in the Big 12 seem to have struggled today against weak competition. I'm not sure if that's opening week jitters or if some traditional Big 12 powers are in for rough seasons. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
