Should I get XBox 360 or PS3? Please recommend which games should I try first?

A question to the console games veterans - should I get XBox 360 or PS3 for my coming birthday? (I know I won't have time for both)

I am mostly ignorant of the last generation of consoles (I mostly play PC games).

Few words about my taste in games - my favorite game genres on consoles are deep RPGs and turn-based strategies. I only own PS2 console(got it few years ago), and some of my favorite games were Final Fantasy 12, Final Fantasy Tactics, Nocturne, Persona 3.

I also liked interesting action games such as in the Shadow of Colossus, God of War, Resident Evil 4.

(naturally all these titles were for PS2)

I have also enjoyed very much these PC/console titles that I have played on PC: Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout3, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effects, Bioshock. But I will likely keep playing such PC/consoles crossplatform titles on PC (since I can mod them there). Still I hope it will give you some idea about my gaming taste.

So if you could recommend me a console, as well as list some great games for both of these platform that you think I might enjoy, based upon my gaming taste, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks a lot!

PS3 gets my vote. I have both and my time spent between them is pretty even, but since you can play some of the Xbox exclusives on PC I would go with the PS3 for the great exclusives that won't be showing up on PC like Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles. Plus since you said you liked Final Fantasy and God of War, you'd be missing out on Final Fantasy Versus XIII and God of War 3. Can't go wrong with either system though.

Get a PS3, I'm on my 5th Xbox now, and of the people I know that have PS3's none of theirs have ever broken. What does it matter what games you have if you can't play them?

Since you have a decent PC, I'd say PS3.

PS3. The current PS3 exclusives are a bit more compelling, I think, and you specifically mention God of War and Shadow of the Colossus--GoW 3 is PS3-only, of course, and the next game from Team Ico will presumably be as well.

Given your games list, PS3 is the right choice.

Get Valkyria Chronicles as your first PS3 game.

I'd go PS3 too. VC and Demon's Souls might be the two games you want to try.

Sounds like most of the stuff I play on 360 you are playing on PC, so a PS3 might give you better variety.

One important question is how into online gaming with friends are you? 360 is vastly superior in terms of getting together and playing with friends.

My wife and I are Xbox 360 zealots but we bought a PS3 just to play Valkyria Chronicles and Demon's Souls and it was worth every penny.

    Given your tastes I'd advise a PS3.

    PS3.

If you would rather play multiplatform games on the PC when given the chance then it is an obvious choice in my opinion.

Yeah, given the original post and the preferences, I would also recommend the PS3. I would also say don't write off the 360. Do get around to it in the future sometime when you have enough time and money, because it also has some really great games. I think you'll probably really love the likes of Crackdown and Fable 2, and others that don't make it to the PC, including some great XBLA games. But given your tastes, especially with God of War 3 coming out in March, I think your choice is pretty clear right now.

I own both (the 360 for a few years now, the PS3 only a few weeks) and from what it sounds from the games you like, the PS3 would be for you.

I'd also give it the slight nod due to being a Blu-Ray player as well.

    Wow, what a great response.

Franky I was leaning toward XBox 360 before posting my question here(mostly because I've read that there are more games for XBox 360 than for PS3, and graphics for some great games are a little better on Xbox360 than on PS3)

But after reading your replies I've decided that I definitely will be getting PS3 since your arguments made a lot of sense. Thanks a lot guys guys!

I will be getting PS3 this weekend. I think I should get 120GB model, right? (I have less the 120GB of installed games on my PC after all, and that was and will remain my main gaming platform)

Now about the games you've recommended. I've created a brief list for my convenience, which lists the name of the game and number of people who recommended it, if it was done more than once.

    For PS3:

    Valkyria Chronicles 4
    Demon's Souls 3

Final Fantasy Versus XIII (not yet released)
God of War 3 (not yet released)

    For XBox 360:
Fable 2 (actually I saw it on my friend's console already, nice but too similar to Fable 1, which I've beaten on PC and found pleasant, but a bit boring sometimes and lacking good story)
    Crackdown

Any other good PS3 and XBox 360 games you would recommend, either based upon my gaming tastes(please check the my original post for the list of games I've loved) or because they are just too awesome to miss in your opinion?

(I am including XBox 360 because, as you have advised, I will probably get it too at some point in the future, once I will have more free time on my hands)

    Thank you!

Demon's Souls (easily my favorite game this gen so far) is a great place to start and will keep you busy for a good long time. There is a demo up for Valkyria Chronicles on PSN so you can give that a go. Also try the inFamous demo and MGS 4 Demo and see if either of those strike your fancy.

It is true that multi platform games tend to be a bit better on 360, but given that you play most of those games on PC it seems a moot point.

Although being a huge 360 fanboy myself, the ps3 does seem to be catching up both in game quality and price competitiveness. It really depends on the type of game you play.

Although if you own a good gaming pc you will have access to a much bigger variety of games by buying a ps3.

You should go with the market leader, the Wii Sports Entertainment System.

    PS3 is the right choice.
If I would buy one today I would do for:

    Uncharted 1+2
    Flower

    Upcoming:
    Heavy Rain
    The Last Guardian
    Final Fantasy XIII

My Xbox 360 list (not owning it yet but picked up the few games I'm interested in for cheap):

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
    Condemned 2
    Crackdown
    Dead Rising
    Fable 2
    Gears of War 2
    Halo 3
    Ninja Gaiden Black
    Ninja Gaiden 2
    Saint's Row
    Viking: Battle for Asgard

    Upcoming:
GTA 4 expansions (if they don't come to the PC)
Darksiders (if the rumored PC port doesn't come)
Alan Wake (if the PC port is dead)

Gosh, they're both relatively cheap now .. I should imagine you'd be able to pick up whichever one you don't primarily choose for a really good price refurbished, if you want to save the cash.

I want to add that the Xbox Live service plus Arcade and Indie game downloads make the Xbox my favourite console of this gen, even though the PS3 hardware is better.

If someone were just looking for a console I'd say Xbox without a doubt, but you have specific needs and already are a PC gamer so PS3 it is :)

Demon's souls is the only ps3 game you need, but buy V. chronicles anyways, because it will be hard to find later, in 5000 years, when demons souls gets old.

Get district 9 as your first bluray and you'll get the God of War 3 demo.

    Yeah, pretty bad after all.

    Crazy.

Still, two hundred bucks .. That's less than three console games.

I think he might be laughing at the "refurbished" part of what you posted. Anyone buying a 360 "refurbished" is essentially buying a ticket to their local UPS store.
