Have you never heard Springsteen? Otherwise I don't know how someone couldn't detect the ham-handed homage of a song like "Modern Man" or "Keep the Car Running"? It's a completely superficial co-option of the blue-collar populist theatricality. It's absolutely baffling why they absconded the personal edginess of their debut for something so thoroughly milquetoast.

However, the awful "Sprawl II" is indebted more to "Heartbeats" and "Heart of Glass."

I hadn't thought of the comparison before, but I can definitely see it in those two songs.

    Also there's this:

I've no opinion on the new record yet, but there's definitely worse places to look for inspiration than Nebraska.

So I'm listening to this band called Speed Skating, which is actually just one guy, an apparently monstrously talented fellow named Steven Urgo (who has toured with bands playing rock guitar and bass, while also building a resume as a jazz drummer). I gotta admit, on first, second, and even third pass this record is doin' it for me.

A little bit dreampop, a little bit psych, a little bit mathrock, it sort of sounds like what you'd get if Archer Prewitt was in The Clean or something.

Whole thing available to listen to here.

Am I crazy, or is this little album just really really fucking cool?

Are you auditioning for a position as a pitchfork media reviewer or something with this post?

I doubt it; the official Pitchfork editorial position on Arcade Fire seems to be "fellate whenever possible."

I was referring more to the writing style. Especially the line "superficial co-option of the blue-collar populist theatricality".

This thread is starting to forcibly transform people into hipsters.

hard to be a hipster when you're talking about the number one album in the country

i'd say that makes you pretty far from "hipster"

I really dig the first two tracks, which is all I've listened to. I doubt you're crazy. Not sure if I like the vocals just yet, but the music is pretty darned awesome.

I don't read Pitchfork reviews, but there's a honesty to Springsteen's homegrown pathos that is going to ring false when consciously attempted by an outsider. If you want someone who goes deeper than the Arcade Fire's veneer, listen to The National.

Wasn't a fan of the album, but it's nice to see an indie label achieve that kind of success. The marquee indie acts are doing very well this year all around.

I've totally fallen in love with it now.

I mean, holy shit, if you know of a song better than this don't tell me, because this sucker's haunting my dreams.

I can't even decide what I like the most about it. Could be the dreamy Lennon-through a reverb vocals, it could be the layered and flingy Shields-y Caribou-like guitars, it could be the huge hip-hop sounding drums which should be out of place but totally work anyway, or it could be the gorgeous tune (the minor drop into a 7th on the chorus just makes the soul ache.)

All the music triggercut links sounds the same. Mostly acoustic sounding with just a touch of distortion. Medium to bad production values characterizing the music with a kind of grungy noise-laden sound. Male vocalists that sing a little too high (or female that sings a little too low).

I don't think I could tell anything he's linked apart, without actual going out of my way to try and remember it.

Anyway, lets get some metal up in this bitch.

The new Nevermore album is fantastic, and has been well worth the five year wait. Thank christ that Warrel Dane's boring side project didn't end up ruining Nevermore, and I'm glad he got that shit out of his system outside of the band. Because Nevermore is as rocking as ever.

On top of that, the new Soilwork continues to prove that they are one of the best bands in metal. Even more melodic and branching, it's an album that shows just how committed they are to improving their sound. Heard it live as well -- fucking awesome. I will never cease to be amazed by just how physically large these guys are. When Bjorn Strid walked past me before they went on, I had a sudden feeling I was supposed to climb him and stab him in a soft spot.

On a non-metal note, the DJ Shadow Remix Project puts a D&B/Breakbeat twist on old classics, and the result is something you want to play very loud. Got bless those added subs because this album makes them so worth it.

Charles, I was going to point out that you don't really seem to know what "acoustic" means, but then I figured "nah, his posting style as observed through the years clearly betrays that he's got some fairly serious disassociative disorders, so best let it pass. That road goes nowhere." So anyway....yeah dude. Metal. Fuckyeah.

Yeah, you can safely file that one under "So Not Worth It."

I've been listening to your new mix every night for the last week or so. Awesome. I need to chop it up into individual mp3's so I can learn who I'm listening to. Tons of new bands I want to check out.

This thread has taught me that you are a hipster if you like the Arcade Fire, but not a hipster if you like Broken Social Scene and The National. Good to know.

You must be very insecure about your musical tastes to jump to a personal attack because I recognized some consistency in the music you link.

Also, I know what acoustic means, it means your music sucks.

Tame Impala are fine, but let's not pretend they aren't an English-language version of Dungen.

Trigger has turned me onto more good bands - bands I literally would never have heard of, otherwise - than any other human being on the internet. I would very much like him to continue to do so.

Holy crap is this good. I've been listening quietly at work, but it needs to be cranked. Really digging the chick's voice from the Leeds.

Maybe more like a mass-market-friendly version of Dungen...which is also not a bad thing.

There's probably a lot of consistency in the music I link, and probably a lot of things in common, chief among them being the person who is typing about them.

    It happens.

I hadn't heard of Arcade fire until the recent posts in this thread. I saw them perform two songs on the Daily Show tonight though, and I really liked what I heard. They're like a cross between Joy Division and Magic Numbers, or something. Maybe I'll have to think of two more appropriate bands to cross. They definitely sound familiar and yet unique. I love that they have two drummers and two violin players in the band.

Very excited for the new album from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin due out Tuesday, Aug. 17th. The tracks I've heard so far sound excellent, such as the title track LET IT SWAY.

Yeah, I liked what I heard and the lead singer looks like he's a time traveler from the 80s.

I didn't think there were people out there below the age of forty who hadn't heard of Arcade Fire. If you go back and listen to the first album you're in for a treat.

I've been listening to a lot of the new Bombay Bicycle Club album, Flaws, which is well worth a go. Charles probably wouldn't like it.

It does get kind of samey samey in here with the pop music being bandied about. Though I attribute that to my tin ear for the genre because I imagine that someone who cares about music as much as triggercut does must be listening to the real gems. (I remember reading his enthusiastic posts on more music I don't like from the gone gold days)

For those of the funk and jazz listening persuasion I present some other kind of sound.

Orgone - Cali Fever - Doing me wrong Is it just me or does that girl do a killer Michael Jackson impression on the chorus?

Budos Band - Budos Band III - Unbroken, Unshaven

The Filthy Six - The Filthy Six - Knockout

Free the Robots - CTRL ALT DEL - Turkish Woodoo

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma - Do the Astral Plane Album of the year and it dropped in February.

Blundetto - Bad Bad Things - Nautilus

    Monkey Sequence 19 - Substantial 12 Monkeys - Rootsong

Quantic presenta Flowering Inferno - Dog with a Rope - Swing Easy Will Holland with his Latin outfit on a massive version!

Oh yes, despite the fact that I'm decidedly under the age of 40 and Canadian to boot I have no interest in Arcade Fire.

So I went to pick up the new Arcade Fire album at the local cool record store, and they were sold out. I can't remember the last time something like that happened. I was talking with the dude behind the counter - a nice kid, whom I chat with a lot - and he said they ordered 50 copies and they were gone before they could get them out on the shelves. "It sold like a Tool CD would have six years ago," he said.

So I wonder: Is this indie-rock's Nevermind moment?
