Fort Hood shootings leave at least seven dead...

Tragic. The odd part is that there were multiple shooters (at least two).

According to MSNBC, there were shootings simultaneously at multiple locations, with the shooters dressed in military uniforms. Nothing on motive yet.

Jesus, awful. I was stationed at Fort Hood the last time there was a mass-murder in Killeen.

They are now saying 12 dead, 30+ wounded, and possibly as many as three shooters.

    Damn.

All three shooting suspects are soldiers, according to the Army.

I'm just amazed at what a good job Shep is doing on this. It's like his time covering Katrina changed everything about him, I used to despise the guy, now it seems like he doesn't belong on Fox. I'm pretty sure not one time since he came on air has he tried to draw a line leading to terrorism, Cavuto couldn't go two minutes before he tried to make that point.

    Jeez that is awful.

This will not be good if confirmed:

A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan. The official said Hasan, believed to be in his late 30s, was killed after opening fire at the base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
The official says investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name, or if he changed his name and converted to Islam at some point in his life.
Smacks of premature speculation at its worst.

People are fucking morons. That's why I never visit that site even to laugh at their ignorance. It makes me angry.

Have some respect and do not twist a tragedy into your own personal chicken little fest.

Amazing. Shooter was apparently right out of Psychiatry residency and had completed a fellowship at Walter Reed on Disaster and Preventive Psychiatry.

This is just going to give more credence to Tom Cruise and his anti-psychiatry campaign.

As someone training in mental health, I'm just floored by this. To get all the way through a psychiatry residency and still have the capacity to do this is incomprehensible. It's almost Hannibal Lecter-esque.

Just out of curiousity. Are soldiers on bases typically armed with at least sidearms at all times?

No way. Weapons are secured, unless you're going to a field exercise or, obviously, to a war zone. I think you were allowed to own personal firearms, but they had to be checked in and out, and the rules about where you could have those were pretty strict.

Interview on Fox (i know... guests were over) with retired Army Colonel, who claims to have worked with him over the years, whose statements were made to pretty clearly imply that Hasan had become disenfranchised with the war, had made statements in years past about the right of muslims to stand up against the US, wrong for muslims to fight muslims, and how he has spent years apparently trying to get out of the army. Of course, it is Fox.

Still some question about the "two other soldiers" that were arrested.

The MPs have weapons, of course. But they can't be everywhere.

The NY Times has an interview with the shooter's cousin: his parents were Palestinian immigrants, he was a Muslim who was taunted by other soldiers for his faith, and dreaded going to Iraq due to the horror stories he heard from others as part of his job.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/06/us/06suspect.html?hp

Also, the other two suspects were released.

And now Larry King has a nutjob going off on how this guy was clearly a terrorist based on his name...nutjob yells at a female JAG on the panel "I've been to Iraq! Have you ever been to Iraq, ma'am?" She responds "I was a PEEE OOO DUOUBLE UUUUU!!!" He shrank into a shell. hehehehehe

Oh, Dr. Phil is also on this panel, I don't know what the fuck to say to about that, other than it's Larry King...

Bill Cosby may show up next...

Read it again, Jason. Lack of empathy from a trained mental health professional is Lecter in a nutshell.

I thought it was just par for the course. All of the people I knew in college studying for that sort of profession were all messed up in the head. But perhaps they all got weeded out, who knows.

I'm not saying I get it, I was responding to the Lecter part of it. Jason may have more to add, like you did.
