    Argh! System crashes

The last week I've been getting "Remote Procedure Call failed to initiate" (not actual error text, translated a bit from Swedish) errors on a fairly regular basis, telling me that XP has suffered some major malfunction and will be rebooted in 1 minute. WTF is up with this?

My first thought is that it has something to do with my net connection, I never saw it before I got my broadband connection.

My second thought is that it's got to do with a lack of memory, typically (but not always) occurring when my system is chugging along as I'm un-raring 600 mb files or doing similar things that eat up my RAM.

    Help?

Sounds like you have the MSBlaster worm on your system. Go to Symantec's site and get the removal tool, and then download all critical updates from Microsoft.

May want to read news sites once and awhile.

You're getting trashed by the MSBlaster virus. Search any virus site for MSBlaster and follow the links to Microsoft's security patch site for the Remote Procedure Call exploit.

You should turn on a firewall while you do this or you'll continue to get reset while trying to download the patch.

Have I heard about Blaster? Yes

Do I have a firewall? Yes.

Did I Download all critical updates, including the Blaster patch, from Microsoft? Yes, two weeks ago.

Have I done a complete virus scan? Yes, yesterday, I do them regularly, two times a month.

So how the <censored> <censored> <censored> could this happen?!

I posted this in another thread - running RegClean is really important, it cleans out crap that various spyware has dumped there:

Microsoft have just admitted the windows update can fail because it only checks the registry, and sometimes thinks an update is installed when it hasn't. This is how the army got hit by the msblast worm - and why I was having weird shit happen.

So a proper check can be done with:

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../mbsasetup.msi

Make sure to run RegClean.exe (also downloadable - but not from Microsoft anymore, search for it).

You should probably also run SpyBot while you are at it and get agressive with any registry inconsistencies it brings up.
