Game of the Month - October

What's been your primary game this past month? It could be a recent title, a new discovery, or something from your backlog. It could be an old favorite or a new flame. What game defined October 2009?

I want to say my game of the month was Demon’s Souls - but that game’s soul crushing difficulty reminds me how I like some game designs, but I can’t enjoy them. I want to say that my game of the month was Brütal Legend - a game I had written off until I played the demo. Tim Schafer is one of the few game designers who gets their name on a box, and he deserves it. Even though I’m not a heavy metal fan, I am enjoying my journey through his world. I even want to say that my game of the month is Borderlands - but I can’t since I haven’t picked it up yet. Or Uncharted 2. Or Ratchet and Clank. Or Dragon’s Age - wait, that’s next month. We are getting a load of quality gaming these few months, and 2009 is shaping up to be quite a year. What is my game of the month? It has to be World of Warcraft, because with even this mass of great gaming, I find myself plucking away at it day by day. It was the convenient game of my month, but next month I hope to shake things up a bit.

Brütäl Lëgënd all the way (home)!

It's not a perfect game and I'm still split about the RTS elements, but it's fucking gorgeus and just an unadulterated love letter to metal. I love it... and I'm not even that into metal.

Unlocking a Ministry tune almost gave me the same sense of joy as hearing The Blue Danube Waltz in Elite.

Borderlands is my runner up... and EyePet as something the family can enjoy without blood and guts everywhere (at least so far).

Demon's Souls, without a question. In a month of fantastic games, nothing else has devoured my time like Demon's Souls.
Borderlands and Forza 3 would be runner-ups, though. Expect to play a hell of a lot more of all three in November, too!

(Sorry, Brutal Legend. I love ya, but you just don't have the raw addictive power of those three.)

Game of the Month for me goes to Risen. It held its grip on me for most of the month until the game degenerated into fighting lizardman after lizardman.

Runner up would be Pathologic. Guess I'm one of the weirdos that like this game. I'm anxious to find out what the next day has in store.

Torchlight rounded out the end of the month for me, but now it's going to go against Dragon Age Origins in November.

Torchlight. Runners up being Dawn of War 2 last stand mode and Gears of War 2 horde mode up until Torchlight was released.

Forza Motorsport 3. I think I clocked more than 40 hours in it last week. Although, according to the stats, less than a third of that time was spent actually driving. That's not to say the driving isn't good, because it's great, but the community features are what elevates it far above and beyond any other racing game I've played.

Demigod: When I'm not exploring the internet between studies I'm squeezing in 30 minute games versus my wife or the AI, then it's back to homework. And I still suck at it versus online opponents.

Killing Floor. Tested this with a few buddies during the free weekend, and have played embarrassing amounts of it in a very short time since. It's a simple game, but it does its thing very well, and it has dampened my interest towards L4D2 considerably.

Team Fortress 2. Got into it again after a long absence from the game. Some of my favourite gaming moments involve running a vulnerable pyro behind an unsuspecting group of enemies with my trusty backburner. Hopefully in game terms October will be dwarfed by November. Dragon Age could not come fast enough.

It's a close call, but Borderlands is holding my interest far more intensely than Uncharted 2 did. And even with the insane decision to use gamespy, I'm still having less MP connectivity problems (though I think my PS3 may be dying)

    Rock Band 2

Got this two monts back and it's just great. Iv'e played gigs with my kids, friends, wife the family. Bought some songs online. It's just GREAT! I know you all know this, but I've just recently found out, and it's just that great!

And I just got Fallout 3 cheap. Been meaning to play that for some time. Played through the starting area and it feels great.

Torchlight. Awesome game that was $20 and runs on everything. More PC games should be like it.The only other games I played significat time on were Fallout 3, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Justice for All and Island Paradise on Facebook.

Demon's Souls. It has its carnassial teeth set deep in the flesh of my thumbs. Brütal Legend is somewhat fun but it's really no contest between the two. The current Blood Bowl league rumbles along but going for the last two single player tournament wins gets to wait until after the end-of-the-year great game glut.

On the PC: Torchlight. It is just a lo(o)t of fun. I play a regular normal difficulty level toon for casual mayhem, but this game can also scratch my old Nethack/ZAngband itch very nicely by going Very Hard + Hardcore.

On the 360: Forza III. So very slick and smooth. I haven't played it for more than 7-8 hours yet, so there may be flaws there, but right now I find it difficult to imagine the need for a future Forza IV.

It's was a cage deathmatch between Brutal Legend vs. Borderlands. Borderlands is a better game, but Brutal Legend is a better everything else.

From now until Christmas it looks like it will be a three-way between trying to finish at least my first playthrough of Borderlands before the siren songs of Dragon Age and The Ballad Of Gay Tony tempt me. Having too many games to play is one of those good problems.

World of Warcraft continues to bathe both my wife and I in it's glow. New guild + fresh 80s = fun for the whole family.

WoW takes up the bulk of my gaming time but I still found room for more GTA Chinatown Wars (my game of the year) on the NDS and Borderlands (which I hated and will be trading in this week) on the Xbox.

Clearly Uncharted 2, though the new Sin & Punishment made a late play in the last few days of the month. Is that game coming out in the West? I actually think the Wii's had a pretty good year, but this is far and away the best game on that system so far in 2009.

I finally had a chance to start playing Batman: Arkham Asylum in October. Holy crap, is that game good. I never really got into comic books, but I've been going through the different profiles of the various characters.

Moved from the amazing Batman: Arkham Asylum on to the rather frustrating Demon's Souls and finally to the excellent Torchlight.

With Dragon Age and the new Ratchet & Clank due this month, the year should be pretty good overall!

I'm not sure. I probably put the most time into Neverwinter Nights 2, though on Friday night I spent a good 4 hours playing Uncharted (yes, the first one). When a 4 hour play session feels epic, you know you're an adult.

On the other hand I played a lot of board games. So the game that probably go the most play was Battlestar Galactica with the Pegasus Expansion, and that's just one session of that.

Once again, though I put far more time into WoW over the month, most of that was just keeping up with the dailies and seasonal events, and I've barely put much time into Forza 3 even though it is quite good, so in the end it probably goes to Machinarium.
