    Panzer General: Allied Assault

I’ve had this game now for a couple of days and I’m really diggin’ it. Initially I was put off by the tiny little playing field and the seemingly very simple ways to win each scenario, but it has progressively gotten both more challenging and interesting.

Before each big attack you need to calculate how many supporting units you have (artillery and nearby units), and weigh that against what you think the AI will do when you attack. A well played ‘Attack Card’ can instantly turn the tide of battle so you always need to keep that in mind. I’ve actually had a few times where a big German ‘King Tiger’ tank broke through my front lines and caused me to experience a fast defeat. I always enjoy playing against an AI that can put up a decent fight.

The biggest plus for this game is it plays out FAST (15-20 minutes). I definitely recommend this game for anyone wanting a quick turn-based strategy fix, it’s worth every bit of the 800 points :)

?? I've played all of the PzG iterations (though usually with the attack animations off).
So yes I know that the name doesn't really apply to a card-based game. But it doesn't bother me, I'm just happy for a new turn-based game. Why the sobs?

I just picked this up and am loving it. Maybe we could use this thread to arrange some online matches, which I'd certainly be up for.

Just the IP milking. Nothing against (good) TBS games.

I'm happy if they milk the PzG IP if it gets us more turn-based games.
And they seem to have gotten some of the original music which makes me smile :)

I found the demo disappointing, 'cause I was hoping it would be more straight-up Panzer General. When I saw the card decks and tiny board, I deleted it.

But, take it you guys are saying I should forget my preconceptions, and try playing the nifty little strategy game, so I'll give it another shot :)

Right it is a little surprising when you play the demo and are expecting one thing and get another. But it's still good, I'm enjoying it. It's also interesting as a collectible style game without being collectible in the sense you have to pay more MS points or something.

Julian Murdoch's praise of this on TMA and GWJ really has me tempted. Only 10 bucks too.

My impression from the demo was that this would be a much better multiplayer game. I really want to get this and get in before the multiplayer dies down, but I just can't justify it when I also really want to die repeatedly in Demon's Souls. Does anyone think that this game will have a multiplayer community with legs? Is it worth it just for the single player campaign?

I recently bought this game and just wanted to add my recommendation as a fun cheap turn based game.

Don't be mislead by the IP. This game has more in common with "Magic the Gathering: Duel of the Planeswalkers" than it does with the old Panzer General games. But if you like the idea of playing a collectible card game without the whole "collectable" money sink, for only 800 microsoft points, then check it out.

I'm only three missions into the single player campaign, but it's turning out to be more fun than it has any right to be.

Is this somehow available on the PC, or is it strictly Xbox360?

The only other version mentioned on their web site is a board game.

I finished the campaign the day before yesterday, and felt it was worth my time, and the $10. I didn't play around with deck-building at all, and only played against the AI, so weigh my opinion accordingly. In general the offensive missions were pretty easy: just stock up on artillery and avoid "dug in" units (which get first shot), or destroy them with card-based attacks. Defensive missions were much harder, since the enemy has the initiative. The balance between units and cards (which give special effects like bonus damage, extra moves, and canceling a combat) was well done, with one glaring exception: every combat allows for a "battle card," which exchanges a single card for bonus attack or defense points. These could easily sway a battle, so winning was often a matter of forcing the AI to use up all its cards, then just rolling over it. Since the AI (almost?) always threw every available card into a combat, it was an easy strategy to execute. I suspect it wouldn't work so well against human players.

I thought the thread was about an old school PG I hadn't played and the first post made sense until he started talking about cards... then I was WTF.

Too bad it isn't on PSN it looks fun.

How similar are the game mechanics to those in Guardians of Graxia? Has anyone played both games?

Very similar. I couldn't really get into Guardians just because I enjoyed PG so much I played the campaign through twice (normal and hard) and I was burnt out. I'll return to Guardians in a year or two and I'll probably really enjoy it.
