    Maybe "Family Reality Shows" should be banned?

    OK this subject covers P&R, Everything Else, and TV... so I just put it here.

    Here's the latest swath of people trying to get rich by exploiting their children:

    * Heen Balloon family
    * Jon & Kate + 8
    * Octomom
    * Wife Swap
    * Toddlers & Tiaras
    * Michael Jackson's kids are supposed to be in a new reality show
    * The list goes on and on.
    * Lindsey Lohan's family.

    There are more and more parents (and Guardians now) who see they can exploit their kids for big bucks and I think this is a dangerous thing.
    There's enough pressure on children as it is, without throwing this kind of crap into the mix.

    If people want "reality shows" with the Jon & Kate formula the participants must all be 17+. Otherwise I see a very bad trend getting much worse...

    How "much worse" could it realistically get, though? Even though there's a fairly large amount of shows about pretty much the same dumb thing, I don't think this is something to rally against. There are plenty of families in the world without their own TV show.

    The only real egregious ones are the ones involving children's exploitation.

    Their should be some tact, but it is hollywood. And money is money.

    I just hope that these kids don't grow fucked up.

    I meant just ones involving children. All other ones I don't care about.

    This is just like the drug law arguments. Reduce the user base, and the supply would drop.

    The problem is, people watch dreck. And as long as people are willing to watch dreck, the networks will keep giving it to them. Cut the ratings of those programs by 80% and I guarantee you they'd be off the air in short order.

    The same idea applies with equal force to the grand tradition of child acting, which has certainly racked up its own body court.

    Those families would all be just as fucked up with or without the TV cameras -- it's just a different kind of fuckeduppery.

    Right. A scumbag who's not on camera is still a scumbag.

    I have to say I have never had the slightest interest in so-called (but obviously misnamed) reality tv, so I don't get the appeal. The fact that some supposedly real event has a camera crew, lighting and mikes capturing it is a bit too obvious to me, and I hate being lied to.

    The spotlight doesn't seem to have negative effects on children's development . . . LINKLINKLINKLINKLINKLINKLINKLINK.

    Pretend I linked to Lohan/Olsen/Jacksons/Coreys/etc.

    I think all reality shows should be elaborate schemes to euthanize and/or sterilize the participants. I may be in the minority on that.

    Kardashians. Will someone please drop a 500lb bomb on their house, hopefully while they are filming. My wife kinda enjoys them, but because I used to leave the room rather than watch it she no longer seeks it out on Sky.

    I don't understand why anyone would want to fill their heads with these people's lives. The parents seem nice enough, but the kids are shallow, callous, dumb, self important, spoiled and tedious. Gaaaaah!

    I'm not sure how Wife Swap is on a list of 'people trying to exploit their children'. Really, it's more about exploiting differences.

    "Carol and her husband are Manhattanites. Her husband is a dentist and she owns an art gallery. Their children attend cultural classes and each have their own talent. Their eldest, Laurie, has an MBA at age 14. Their middle child, Zune, has performed on Broadway. And their youngest, E60 M5, produces her own line of high end jewelery which has been worn on the red carpet by Gwenyth Paltrow and Halle Berry. Today she'll be swapping with Elena Juggalo. Formerly Elena Denisof, she and her husband officially changed their last names during their Juggalo themed wedding. Their children, Faygo, Great Milenko and Joker Card Dark Carnival Juggalo, all participate in back yard wrestling."

    It's horrible and wonderful and more horrible. The trashiest trash imaginable.

    Yeah, there's Balloon Boy, but that's not the show's fault. The dad just got hooked on fame, I guess. But if you're gonna blame Wife Swap for that, might as well blame it for the asshole anti-American British dude on there a while back and say that ABC hates the troops.

    The best reality shows (and the only ones I will watch) since season 2 of The Apprentice:
    Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes

    The writing & creativity on this forum is usually at a pretty high level, but occasionally it approaches the sublime. This is one of those times.
