Comic Book Wednesday 9/23/09- Issue #5 (Old Man Logan Finale, Fantastic Four, 'Tec)

    Interesting Books This Week:
    Detective Comics #857-
The end of Rucka and JH Williams' first arc. Next: Origin story!
Superman: Secret Origin #1 (of 6)- Geoff Johns and Gary Frank tell the definitive (for at least another 10 years) origin story. Looks really good but I'll wait for the trade.
Amazing Spider-Man #606- Peter Parker is quite possibly the luckiest man in the Marvel U. I mean, he hit the jackpot and it still ain't slowing him down.
Wolverine Giant Size Old Man Logan #1- This is it! Check out the goatse!
Wednesday Comics #12 (of #12)- All gorgeous things end some time.
Fantastic Four #571- So a fellow Qt3 raved about the first issue of Hickman's run so I picked it up. And it was damn good. Here's the second.
    Spider-Woman #1- Start of Bendis and Maleev's Spider-Woman ongoing.
Underground #1 (of 4)- Jeff Parker. Steve Lieber. Hell yes!
Invincible #66- Cory Walker returns to the series for a couple of issues!

For the rest of the week's comics (and a great way to manage your pulls for the week) go here and report back.

The Spirit of Gotham is looking an awful lot like the old Dark Horse character "Ghost", especially with the current Detective Comics art style.

Anyone check out the itunes version of Spider-woman? I wish we could get those in Canada, but we're 'protected' from programming.

I wish JH Williams was doing a comic I'm interested in reading.

It's unremarkable. Although I hate the first issue of the comic is a $1 extra, I'd stick with the issues.

It was supposed to be THE motion comic, to show us that motion comics could actually be good and it fails. I kinda like the music and Jessica Drew does have a sexy accent. But they totally fucked up the dialogue and such.

Thanks for the review - that's disappointing. I thought it had some real potential as a medium (and maybe still does, even if this one didn't really deliver as well as it could have).

I really hate motion comics and I'm hoping they die off soon. I want to read comics on my iPod, sure, but that doesn't mean I want them read to me like they're Little Golden storybooks.

I don't know what Little Golden storybooks are, but they sound awesome.

Seriously. I watched a bunch of the Invincible motion comics and wanted to gouge out my eyes and ears. Not only did it sound (and often look) idiotic, but in editing the dialog with the intent to, I imagine, make it sound better when spoken out loud, they also made it worse and took out relevant plot points at the same time. And that's without even mentioning the voice acting.

That's disappointing. I've grown to really like audiobooks as a medium that's a cross between offering the entertaining delivery of movies, but with all the content of the book, so I thought motion comics might similarly deliver something kind of cool.

Maybe it'll mature into something better - audiobooks work so well largely because most professional readers are amazingly talented, so they offer something more than just some schmoe reading a book. Bad VO in those comics would just kill them.

Oh, the Invincible one was dreadful. It's like they actively tried to ruin it.

He's Canadian. I'm guessing they don't get Little Golden Books up in Canada. Or maybe he just doesn't have kids. Regardless, Desslock is definitely not younger than you.

It's so adorable when 20-somethings think they're "old." ...Oh wait, no it's not. Now get off my lawn, you whipper snappers!

It's been a long time since I've been called a twenty-something. That's kind of pleasant.

Fantastic Four this week is quite possibly perfection. Whoever said this run is going to be legendary was totally correct. This is going to be the definitive Reed (and by extension FF) story. My god. It's everything a Fantastic Four book should be. Hopefully Hickman ends up illustrating an arc of this himself. So much fun. If a kid walks into a comic store for the first time and picks this up (a reach, I know), he's going to be into comics forever just like those kids who read The Dark Phoenix saga so long ago.
Definitely my pick of the week.

Arrgh, why on earth did I buy JLA this week? Completely awful. I should have learned my lesson from, oh, the last three issues in this arc

I picked up the last couple FF4 based on the last couple CBW threads.

Kieron, they were giving away Thor bookmarks with your name on them.

I saw those as well. I talked up S.W.O.R.D with one of my shop employees as well. He seemed pretty unaware but I don't think he does the orders.

Hopefully they give out a free SWORD saga book in October.

I went on a bender and finally read books 8,9 and 10 of Y, the Last Man this week. Finished up the last book yesterday.

I am satisfied with the ending. Still stings a bit the next day

Ah, Y wasn't doing it for me but BKV didn't get with Runaways until pretty the first series end so I'll give it another shot with the hardcovers. Just wish they'd come out quicker.

Wow, that issue of FF4 is great. I'll have to pick up last issue as well. This is the kind of stuff I've been missing in JLA
