Congestion doesn't matter, if your server is congested you just get switched to an overflow server. Once they add guesting, your server only really matters for WvW.
That's a good idea, but here's my dilemma. Rolling on a low pop server, especially initially, might be great for me as there's less congestion, hopefully it's more stable, and I'm not going WvW right away anyway. So it's tempting to roll on a different server then just transfer over when things are settling down.
The problem is, when it comes time to transfer... are they even going to allow you to transfer to a "Full" server? My guess is no. So that makes me want to roll on JQ as quickly as possible and make sure I get in.

It mattered in beta and I don't see why it won't matter at release. There has to be a hard cap on population at which point the server just won't let any more accounts to be created there. When that happens, you don't get queued to overflow, you won't even be able to create a character there at all.
So I think KevinC's concern is valid. What happens if you want to transfer to a server that has hit it's hard cap?
Once they add guesting, the only real reason to transfer servers is for WvW. Or I guess if you get stuck on one of those unofficial foreign language servers, or with a megaguild.
Like someone else said, post-release they should control server transfers by price; it will cost more to transfer to a high-pop server. Since most of the traditional reasons to care about your server population don't exist in GW2, that should be sufficient.
Anyone know of an easily digestible preferably YouTube up to date class overview?
I haven't watched these (yet), but here is something that might be right up your alley if you can handle the length:
ALTTABME.COM Podcast, Guild Wars 2 "What profession should I play?"

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGyCSDFX6po
(EDIT: After watching some of it, it's not very concise and quite conversational so might not be exactly what you're looking for.)

So what if I want to play on a server that's is supposed to have great PvP, but it's full so I can't transfer there and I don't know anyone there? Guesting wouldn't do me any good, would it?
It sounds to me like you're better off starting on a server with the population to support good PvP and WvWvW rather than simply hoping you can transfer to be guested to a better server.
Agreed. If being on a solid WvWvW team is your concern, your home server should really be chosen based on that. Guesting (when implemented!) will be sufficient for everything else I think.
It seems logical that they'll just charge more to discourage people from transferring to overloaded servers, rather than blocking it entirely. But I don't know that they addressed that question directly.
Even knowing someone won't help. Guesting won't let you play with them in WvW (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World).
I think it would be more important to find a guild that will do it. The server location of guild will then dictate your server pick. They want to reset WvW regularly and try to match similar worlds, so eventually you'll be getting reset and going against servers with similar turn-out. So finding an organized crew would I think then be better. While the world gets the bonuses, there will also be guild perks to be bought.
I really hope the cockteasing that Anet is doing with the image of the eye is going to be an epic release trailer. :D
What eye? ;)
EDIT: Oh I know what you are talking about. My guess is a preview of a frame of the live action trailer? :)

Does anyone know if Anet is giving you time before you have to enter the code from the box? I have it pre-ordered from Amazon (qualifies as pre-purchase), so I might not get it until next week.
Yes but i think that your account gets 'locked' after 5 days from release(28th) until you add the code.
Sign me up as interested in joining a QT3 guild.
Anyone working on filling their Guild Wars Hall of Monuments to get the special items for GW2 might be interested to know that there is a special festival, "Wayfarer's Reverie" which kicked off yesterday. There are bonuses for the grindy titles but the main thing is a series of quests visiting key points through the four campaigns. The reward is for completing them is a random "Tormented weapon", one of the more difficult to acquire artefacts for the Hall of Monuments. The event runs until the end of the month.
I'm glad they are running this event because it gives me something to do (other than holding my breath) while I wait for the weekend to come.
Me too. We gonna need another thread? This is gonna be unruly in a few days if we're just in here alone.

If you're creating a Qt3 guild as opposed to joining the BFF guild, maybe consider using the social groups feature? That's what it's for.
There's a Broken Forum / Qt3 guild forming on Jade Quarry, if you're interested.
Stress test tomorrow from 12 to 4PST. :D
It'll be interesting to see the latest class tweaks since last week!
Prepurchased. /sigh Following the Qt3 pack down the rabbit hole AGAIN.
Is there an official server choice? I have friends that are forming up on Northern Shiverpeaks, but it looks like folks here are looking at Jade Quarry. I am a bit nervous as looking at that guild list, it is looking like Jade Quarry is going to be pretty popular for a US server. Given the amount of hype and anticipation, I am not sure aiming at the highest population server at launch is a solid plan.
That said, I would like to play with the Qt3 folks, so, what is the plan?
Last I heard, the BFF/Qt3 folks were all settling on Jade Quarry still. Wanderers have not yet picked a server, though I believe the decision will be made within 24 hours.
A couple of days ago I went through the server lists at gw2guilds and added up the populations from the guilds who indicated they were settling on each server. While Jade Quarry doesn't have the highest number of guilds, it had the highest population. These are the numbers from August 15:
Tarnished Coast 1280
Jade Quarry 2675
Crystal Desert 1900
Isle of Janthir 990
Sorrow's Furnace 2090
Yak's Bend 1545
Fort Aspenwood 1085
Gate of Madness 1260
Blackgate 1600
Stormbluff Isle 1400
I did a couple earlier this evening and of course they're all higher but I believe the relative order is unchanged. Jade Quarry worries me since it has either the highest or second-highest population of all the US servers listed (Sanctum of Rall has a megaguild on it which may push it into first place for raw population).
While I don't believe these numbers are accurate, I do believe the relative numbers give a good indication. Of course, I think WvWvW is going to be problematic on many of the higher population servers for a while, since there are tons of people who will want to try it out and since the population caps are relatively low for that activity.
