Yeah, there's a good chance that this will be another game which is best consigned to nostalgic memory, but when I first played it on my PS/2 (that's IBM, not Sony, youngsters), I was totally hooked. I do remember "breaking" the game by manipulating the stock market, though. I ended up with way more money than I should have had as the game went on, and was dropping cash on the top tier mechs and equipment and pretty much coasting to victory.
I think that BT:TCHI may still be interesting because the formula was sort of dropped with that game and its sequel. While MechWarrior was improved upon with each iteration, and with the raft of mech games in the genre it spawned, the BattleTech setup didn't seem to survive. I suppose you could make a case that the Front Mission games had a similar setup, but I don't think you had the cool mix of infantry and armored combat (though I could be wrong). And, no, jumping out of a mech in that crappy XBox game and "jacking" another doesn't count.
Side note: A visit to MobyGames has informed me that BT:TCHI and its sequel were Westwood games. Bless those guys for their contributions to 80s and 90s gaming. Damn EA for destroying them a la Origin.
Oh yeah, Crescent Hawk's Inception, loved that game. I too 'played' the stocks and worked out how to steal a Chameleon mech so I was overpowered through the main game. Never played the sequel though, since it wasn't released for the C64.
Yeah, Mech 2: Mercenaries is my favorite out of all of them.
Mech 2: Ghost Bear Legacy.
Although betrayed, defeated and DNA flame extinguished, the pride of the bear shall not be forgotten, for they were the last, true, honourable, brute defenders of the clans!
Talking about this really takes me back.
I stayed up late one night to finish that game, and remember the battle quite well. I'd gotten the up-and-down stride of my mech and the proper number of pixels that the numberpad moved my crosshairs with each press downpat so that I could aim for the cockpit/head on a mech as soon as it was within range of my PPC's. Those Atlas mechs went down REAL fast for me thanks to that little exploit. While that made the final battle a bit anticlimactic, at least I had the feeling that I was some Mechwarrior ace. Ahh ... the glory.
As for missing story, I wonder how much difference of opinion there is between those who played the boardgame(s) and those who didn't. A lot of the sense of story might have been carried over subtext from prior readings.
I vigorously and attentively read every mission briefing and de-briefing. I felt like I was part of the pride and actually making an impact.
I was filled with hate for our enemies for their transgressions and dishonourable acts of cowardice.
Even though I wasn't fighting alongside any 'named' heroes or against any 'enemy champions'.
By contrast, I played Section 8 : Prejudice and I felt ZERO apathy towards either side or characters, and the story felt rather bland if not downright sheepishly lame.

It does. Except that he said "by contrast", which leads me to believe that's not what he meant.
And that's what happens when you think "complete apathy" while trying to type "zero empathy" at the same time.
The story in Mechwarrior follows the paradigm of a lot of open world rpgs of the fight-loot-upgrade-dick around sort. Freelancer, ev nova, even the modern gtas ... elite was probably the first. Go where you will, fight for whomever, pick up and do the occasional storyline mission complete with textscenes (before we had cutscenes) that might require you to grind a bit for transport cash if it happened to be on the ass end of Davion and you were in Draconis. Pretty standard, I don't think the mission hotspots were even randomized ...
Except that Mechwarrior had a literal binary choice at the end where winning or losing depended on having read the story earlier. Naturally this was presented in glorious wall o text format. :)
No dice Kearney.
(I didn't have to google ANY of that).
Reading some of Bryans older posts it looks like he really likes the idea of having a a special edition of the game with a custom made control/joystick setup a-la Steel Battalion.
I'd be on that in a heartbeat.
Arise
So didn't dig through the whole thread but it appears whatever problems they were having are solved for the release of Free MW4 mercenaries.
http://www.mektek.net/projects/mw4/
Downloading it now
I hate you in ways that were unknown to me as possible.
This has been out for eons now!!!
Please, everyone, refrain from posting here until there actually IS news about the next MW.
Getting so excited to see the thread back up and then...nill...this is killing my heart. *frumple* =(
Sorry to upset you so, but last time I was checking there were complaints about it not working or the release had been delayed or whatnot. Just letting other knows that it appears to be working now and doesn't require a CD etc. Searching through the qt3 threads this seemed like the most relevant one to post in.
You're thinking about the mythical Mech Warrior 5 that was halted due to legal bullshit. MW4:Mercs has been out for over a year now and everyone who's a loving fan of BattleTech knows of it by now...except you.
Am I allowed to post about my next game, if it has mechs in?
Authorization granted, Agent Cliffski. You may proceed.
In the future I'll be sure to run all my posts through my handy does Foxstab give a shit checker.
That screen shot seems to be broken... no matter where I click nothing happens.
Gawrsh, that looks splendid. Are you doing the preorder beta thing again, you think?
That looks awesome! It's not some tower defense thing, is it?
Will it feature heat sinks? :)
