But CGW consistently has those great Geryk vs. Chick pieces, which are great, and recently, once a quarter, I believe, wireless (cell phone) gaming articles, and I really enjoyed the last one.
I'd have to say Computer Games has my favorite ones. The last few pages of every issue are some of my favorite. Sept issue for example had the awesome lookinglass bit, the wire bit (which sounded so familiar), and tom chick's hilarious SWG story. Can you really bus tables in SWG?
Computer Gaming World's only piece I liked was Greenspeak or whatever but that ended which sucked. I wanna see it come back!

CGW is the only one I actually "read". The rest of them are just there for the pretty pictures (Play being the best at that).
I could care less about wireless gaming. Greenspeak used to be the king of all columns. Sorry to say it, but I think Coffey's replacement column is not nearly as good (I don't even usually read it anymore--I think the last one was about how multiplayer opponents are too whiny). Geryk vs. Chick is also always a fun read. Green's EIC column is usually at least a good read, although it's not as good as the freewheeling stuff he could put in Greenspeak.
The columns at the end of Computer Games are all usually pretty good.
I agree that tearing out the wireless gaming would cause me no pain. I skip that whole section. CGW does good reviews and has updates on game delivery schedules and things that I like. Chick vs Geryk is always a great read as well. But for "writing/articles" I also agree that in general CG has them beat in this regard.
I like Cindy Yans' RPG articles in CGM. I really liked the Inside the Sausage Factory articles that Phil Steinmeyer did also in CGM. I hate those had to end. Chick's 3 finger salute regarding SWG this past month gave me a chuckle.
So, yes, CGM would be my choice with my read a few articles at the bookstore chice being CGW.
Where the hell did Bauman go, BTW? Did someone gently touch him, too.
Bauman announced that Cleve Blakemore's postings on these boards might somehow taint him (Bauman) by association and that it was unwise for him to post here because of that, so he apparently left.
Who's Bauman?
Can't find him on the member's list...
Steve Bauman, EIC of Computer Games Magazine.
Can you tell him that Cleve is gone?
I loved Geryk's articles in CGW. Why doesn't he do them anymore?
Can someone care to share what the lookingglass bit was about? I'm curious to know...Originally Posted by MrAngryFace

I always liked Jason Cross' tech column in CGM. Too bad it's going away. ;) :P
I know it's a horribly trite thing for an Italian to do, but...I put a hit out on him after that thread where he Photoshopped my head onto a baby pig. He's probably at the bottom of Lake Champlain now.Originally Posted by Tyjenks

So, anyhow, I'm tired of the PC Gamer staff playing 'Grab-Ass' all the time. The entire staff has left to 'cough' pursue other oportunities and I have little respect for the new ones. And I'm jumping ship. I will miss 'Desslock's' RPG coverage after reading the first [good job Stefan] I've seen other threads along these lines with CGM coming out a clear winner [i.e. ... Less 'Grab-Ass'] so I'm prolly going with that.
Also, on a side note, Why can't the purveyors' of paper perchance ponder possibilities of providing paid-up partakers a pixelized place to peruse.
er, uh ... I mean a website worth visiting.
For my 2 centavos, CGW used to have the best writing, but I think in terms of consistency Computer Games probably wins out now. CGW has the occasional flashes of brilliance though. (all you CGW writers who post here, feel free to think I'm talking about you, even though I'm probably not. Except for Chet and Erik. More articles about screwing people over in BF1942, plz.)
To me all the mags are within shouting distance of one another in terms of quality, and my interest level in reading them is about the same. I should probably subscribe to all three since it doesn't cost that much, but I don't for some reason.
What I'd really like to see are fatter magazines, game mags stuffed full of ads and articles. They're a bit anemic now, slender 100 page dealies with a handful of previews, reviews, and tips. I flip through one in about five minutes. It takes me an hour at most to read what I want to read in one.
Websites cost money. Money is not freely available. Websites do nothing to improve that situation, rather, they exacerbate it.
CGM's website was great. New content and everything. Then they, wisely, realized they were giving away for free what they could put in the magazine and were, for the most part, competing with themselves. Then they moved to posting articles/reviews from past issues. At that point, they were simply paying someone to echo the magazine on the web and by that time a lot of the same info had been on other sites for a month or more.Originally Posted by TheWombat
I even liked the interface with the scrolling menu on the left and the content on the majorit of the page. Can't blame them for shuttin' 'er down, but I miss it.
True, they aren't as thick as they used to be, but it turns out that PCG's latest issue weighs in at 160 pages. It's nice and hefty, if I do say so myself :D.Originally Posted by Mark Asher
And it comes with a DVD this month. Is that not spiffy?
DVD? Is it a movie I can play on the Xbox or PS2? I don't have a DVD drive on my PC.
:( People like you is the reason PC Games will come out on five dozen cd's in the forseeable future.Originally Posted by Mark Asher
It's a DVD-ROM with full-sized trials of 3 EA MMOs, a dozen playable demos, and a dozen trailers. About 4GB all told. But it won't play in a set top box or console.Originally Posted by Mark Asher
I dont have a DVD drive either. I upgrade my machine a lot, but I just dont see the need for one. I will never watch a movie on my computer, and games dont really need it at this point.
I really would like to have been able to access the DVD in this months PC Gamer though, just for the TToEE video walkthru thingy on it. Anyone seen that for download anywhere yet?

As it turns out, DVD-ROM drives are down to as little as $30 these days. You can also get DVD/CD-RW combo drives that burn CDs at the latest speeds starting around $60. ...In fact, I could use one of those, as I've been wanting another free bay for a dedicated DVD burner...Originally Posted by olaf
