Check out the "woman" he drew for some kind of pose-helper App:
As someone who knows nothing about art, but has seen a woman before, this is painful to look at. The face is pretty good though, I'll give him that.
No doubt. Shouldn't everyone be raging on the strange proportions of Gabe's legs and his simplistic, triangular feet?

To be fair, the model's thighs are kinda oddly shaped too.
It is --and God help me for typing this because I mean it in a literal and non-salacious way-- the gaping space between her legs that's so distracting.
The model's thighs are perfectly shaped, and the fact that they make contact with each other is a big part of that. He completely ignored that and ended up with god knows what. Like Jamie Madigan, you can't stop looking between her legs, but not because you want to.
I like how her left hand is casting some sort of "repel thigh" spell causing her leg to slowly slop off the bone.
I mean the woman is right there and he can't get her knee to point in the right direction?
FASCINATING.
Red nose AND red toes. Fucker just can't help himself. Anyways he was obviously trying to slim her down, but he couldn't do it without trading off anatomical coherence. He's never drawn Tycho or his wife to their IRL proportions so I guess he's a bit out of practice with chubbier subjects.

I can't stop looking at the rubber knees. Jesus.
I like a lot of Gabe's backgrounds and his exaggerated style is good for facial expressions, but he doesn't do the natural human form very well.
It is, legitimately, one of the most bizarre pieces of artwork I've ever seen. Fucking Picasso n shit up in here.
Check this shit out, guys. Has this dude ever actually looked at a human neck? And what about that hand by his leg, it's the size of his head.
Dude! How about a NSFW tag or something. I mean, kids might read this thread, and you've posted pics of some guy's junk? Have you no shame? Won't someone think of the children?
LOL I didn't even recognize that that was his junk!
That's 'cause PA has conditioned you to believe there is nothing there, just a flat, empty area. It's insidious when you stop to think about it.
Oh, there's nothing wrong with the artwork. It's a stylised cartoon character, not a true-life portrait and let's be honest: Gabe's character is carrying less weight than the model in the reference photograph so I'm not that bothered that the former's thigh's aren't touching. Do a GIS for 'naked model standing' and you'll see plenty of NSFW pics of slim women who's thighs wouldn't necessarily meet in that pose. You'll also note that from a distance their boxes look, well, boxy.
And the distortions and weird anatomical choices seem to serve no real purpose. They don't add to the sense of movement or weight, they just make it look weird and sort of gross in places. From the ribcage down it's practically inexplicable.
David's hands and head are out of proportion because it was meant to go on a rooftop, where the exaggeration would help a viewer pick out the details from far below. Please explain how Gabe's depiction of the woman's legs will help someone who is trying to draw that pose.
I wonder why sometimes the new PA strip is posted at art.penny-arcade.com and sometimes it's posted at pennyarcade.smugmug.com. My shitty work filter will block a strip posted at smugmug so I can't see it, but they're fine with the ones actually posted at PA's site. I really can't figure out why they'd change it up occasionally.
Possibly, although my assumption was that Gabe's art is to demonstrate the use of the reference picture and was not itself intended to be used as a reference. I've no real way of knowing since Salwon didn't link to the poser helper app.
EDIT: and when I say "I've no real way of knowing", I mean "I can't be arsed googling" since I don't have a problem with Gabe's art in the first place.
It's a fucked pose. The pelvis has no rotation and throws off everything.
From his post:
(The Stephen in question isn't me, but someone else named Stephen).Stephen is working on an incredible new App for artists called Posebook. This is a huge collection of photographs featuring models in various costumes striking hundreds of different poses. The other part of the App is that Stephen has reached out to a number of different artists and asked them to choose a pose and draw their take on it. He’ll then include these pieces for some extra inspiration.
He goes on to say:
So he admits that it was a challenge for him, but still - the anatomy is completely fucked. I can't imagine how that drawing will help anyone trying to draw that model.I have a very hard time drawing women and so I picked this barbarian woman to give myself a real challenge.
I like Gabe's art in general, especially in the context of a three panel comic strip. But seriously, he needs to start paying attention to how human bones move.
