Can you do sound over DVI (in one cable) like HDMI?

    Sorry for the noob question.

Specifically, an HDMI Vista laptop to a DVI LCD tv. Can you get sound using only a HDMI to DVI cable?

Some receivers can accept HDMI in and then produce separate video and audio outputs though, if that's acceptable.

So my 4850 with DVI out can't put sound out to my TV through a DVI-to-HDMI cable? (yeah, I know, I'm a big A/V noob. Oh well)

No, you need to also connect an audio out cable from your PC sound card (or onboard sound port) to your TV or receiver.

If your PC can output digital sound via SPDIF or Toslink then something like this will work:

Note that's just the first thing that came up in my Amazon search, I am sure there are better and cheaper solutions.

But doesn't the 4850 (some variants, anyway) support HDMI output, including audio, if you configure it properly? And, presumably, use the adapter that should have come with the card?

My 4670 has HDMI that supports audio+video output (I'm going to use it in an HTPC I'm building), so I would assume a 4850 with HDMI can do this as well. But not all 4850's have HDMI.
