i just don't feel like throwing down 50-60 bucks for another left 4 dead when the original was so light on content. its so out of character for valve to go this route.
I must have missed a video. The only line I heard was "Reloading!" and it sounded the same as in L4D just with a different voice. The real meat of the personalities in L4D is at the various trigger points where the characters have dynamic conversations about where they are going or what they see, hopefully Valve is just keeping those as a surprise for when you are actually playing the relevant campaigns.
They JUST released the SDK, and there are still plenty of things to fix in the original. I'm surprised, to be sure, but I will reserve my "buy/not buy" judgments until a bit closer to release.
I like the idea that the plot has more cohesion between chapters. I like a new setting, even though the bits I've seen of it weren't doing anything for me, but it does seem fast.
I only saw 2 linked within the actual article. The little videos thing says there are 8, but when I click that I get an empty page. Is this a new IGN strategy to make me refresh a lot to maximize pageviews?
When I go to the actual page, there's a sidebar with eight videos in them, and one plays after another automatically.
Ah OK I got it. thanks!
My sincere apologies for the shameless self-promotion, but it does have the virtue of being relevant...

It is.Sounded like Dennis Cuddy from The Wire doing the voiceover in the video at the Microsoft conference.

Awesome! Is that confirmed somewhere, or is it just that it sounds just like him?
That sounds quite a bit better than the stuff on the IGN videos.
OK, THAT looks interesting. Way better than that first video that was linked.
I'm an idiot because you've got youtube quality videos that aren't exactly going to show the real strengths of the audio or video... And you've already passed judgment that the game is shaping up to be bad.
I'm saying that you're not exactly giving it any chance to prove itself. So, yeah, once again, you're being a dick for the sake of being a dick. You go, frank austin!
Epic facepalm.
I give that post 2 palms firmly planted on my face.
Did the original four even have backstories? Why is the fact that he's an enthusiastic mechanic relevant? The whole point is that the person playing the survivor defines who they are and what their strengths and weaknesses are. For example, it doesn't matter if I'm Zoey, Francis, Louis, or Bill, I'm the sarcastic asshole on the team.
Here's something else to consider:
Did Valve just murder every single L4D mod in it's tracks by announcing the sequel?
They just released the SDK, and not long after announce a new game that will probably be out around the same time as any of the more well-produced mods would be.
What the hell. This is the thing I was least expecting from E3 and from Valve. I feel it makes no sense to make a sequel this early for a game that could have been kept alive with constant DLC (like TF2). Why not just add new stuff to L4D? I have no idea, but maybe the TF2 free DLC format wasn't profitable?
This isn't like Valve at all. I'm having some trouble expressing my feelings about this, it's just weird.
Also, even though L4D is pretty cool, it's not my favorite Valve franchise. They better show some HL stuff or something completely new.
The press conference trailer talked about "out of bullets...you'd wish we weren't", and some chainsaw looking action. I haven't seen the other info yet, but maybe there's more melee-options? Maybe more asymmetry (ala Hunter vs. Smoker) among the PCs?
First reaction upon hearing about this is "Very disappointed." L4D is SOOOO underdeveloped.
Second reaction upon watching the first video posted: Sunny? Same weapons with different models?
I don't know... I think this seems to be milking the cash cow, as some have pointed out. If that turns out to be true, I refuse to give in!
I'm really perplexed by this. Is this going to be priced as a full game? Will it be a standalone expansion?
It's really weird how betrayed I feel by Valve right now. I know that's my irrational issue, but still...
from the press release:
http://store.steampowered.com/news/2552/Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.
There are more melee options. Axe cuts off limbs from the videos, there's also a bat and some other melee weapons I can't remember.
Another disappointment from the videos: Apart from the melee weapons, which I will likely not ever use in versus or on expert, the weapons thus far appear to just be re-skins. The weapons in L4D were one of my bigger gripes, and I want more.
I must say, though, that I would buy this if they just put in a better matchmaking interface. But that should happen anyway.
