    Slim PS3

Yeah, I thought these pics seemed pretty bogus at first. But it now seems that the Chinese company where these photos were taken have sent Engadget Japan a takedown notice. Hell, thats as good as an official confirmation.

A slim version is certainly expected, since the current PS3 is apparently just too expensive to produce, but these could just be mockups and the project is still at an early stage. They don't even show any internals, just the outer shell.

That doesn't look too much slimmer to me since I can only see the top half of the shell.

I can't imagine that it's gonna show up soon, but you gotta fugure Sony is looking to reboot the PS3 at this point. I have no idea if these pictures are bullshit or not, but I would say the idea that a PS3 slim is in the works seems pretty sound.

Luckily, this leak accelerates the timeframe for it, cuz nobody buys an old model when a new one is on the horizon. So! Holiday 2009? Though maybe not that soon; the model looks rather unfinished.

Ugh--why do they always try to be too cool for school and make it curved on the top in some way so you can't put another (light) component on top of it? The airspace above probably needs to be unencumbered for ventilation purposes, I suppose.

I'll buy one when it's $125.00 and has a huge library.

And shouldn't this thread be posted in the Hardware section?

Edit: Maybe not. It looks a bit hardcore over there.

Maybe they should slim down the price and "unslim" the number of good games first.

There's plenty of good games - it's the number of good exclusives that's debatable.

But I feel like this is the wrong thread for that.

Yes, we should reserve this thread for talking about how piracy is killing PC games.

Anyway, I hope that they have the common decency to put an IR port into any hardware revision they do. I realize that doesn't exactly fit with their whole penny-pinching plan for cheapening everything up, but really.

The Taiwanese company could be making illegal PS3 knockoffs, which could be why they're threatening to sue over these images before Sony goes after them.

It looks too cheap to be legit. (And Sony's CFO was just telling the press yesterday that manufacturing costs are within 10% of retail price.)

Maybe if they solicit J. J. Abrams' help it will be a success.

They already drove the company off the cliff, not sure what JJ Abrams could help with.

The sooner IR dies, the better. Line of sight has no place in the 21st century.

This. A thousand times, this. I lost count of the number of moments I wanted to throw my wiimote because of controls being dodgy due to the wiimote not being perfectly aligned with the sensor bar.

Knock offs with the same name, a Dual Shock 3, PSN, Blu-ray and 120GB HDD on the packaging?

For the current model. A price reduced "slim" version could be substantially less. Smaller case, less packaging, smaller, less expensive cooler, maybe an external power source, simplified mobo, etc.

The high cost of the PS3 has been the number one thorn in Sony's side for years now. This is no secret, and 100% of their efforts should be to reduce the cost. Hopefully for them this is a real system that is much cheaper to produce and can come to market at $299, soon.

Sony logo has changed in print ads

I didn't buy this leak at first but then I was thumbing through the latest Game Informer (Modern Warfare 2 cover) and saw an ad for Red Faction Guerrilla and Sony is using a new log in the ad.

Gone is the spelling out of "PLAYSTATION 3" in the Spider-Man font as their logo for the PS3 in print mag ads for games.

New logo in this ad (and one for Killzone 2 in last month's GI) is in large letters "PS3" and in very small letters "Playstation 3" under it.

Other than the font, this is in the same format as the logo on the "slim" box picture.

This leads me to believe there is a greater than 50% chance this is legit.

    [ Update ]

Here is a photo of the logo in the Red Faction Guerrilla print ad. Also, going back through the issue, found the same log in the ad for the new Batman game and in a GameStop ad for preordering Modern Warfare 2.

I'm assuming this logo is pretty new since I've never seen it before. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That was just the end-of-season cliffhanger. It all gets explained in the fall.

    A 300 dollar PS3 is really tempting.

    Ars Technica:

Our trusty inside source spills the beans about Sony's long-term strategy. The PSP-Go! is real, and should be announced at E3. The more surprising news? A slimmed-down PS3 is in fact coming, but not until Sony sells the PS3s sitting on retail shelves. The full report inside.
Allow us to explain. There are plenty of PS3 systems sitting on store shelves right now, and Sony is planning on sitting back and allowing the supply of those units to dry up over the summer. We shouldn't expect a price cut, but the possibility is certainly there. After retailers are ready for new stock, Sony will begin releasing the slimmer units to retail, although what features have been taken away or added is still anyone's guess.
sony better realize that no one is gonna care about a slim ps3 if the price is still $400+
