Hopefully they'll have a Steam forum up pretty soon -- preferably before the release of the game. That should help them generate some more interest.
I wanted badly to get into Fate but never could manage it, probably due to the generic skill/leveling system. Torchlight's distinct classes seems to have fixed this for me so I'm hoping it draws me in.

Quick question, is the Steam version going to have limited activations? I read on the Runic forums that the version you buy from Runic themselves will, but nothing solid on the Steam version. That's the biggest thing holding me back at the moment.
How many activations?
For Runic, the limited activations is just their form of DRM. Steam already has it's DRM built-in (you have to connect to Steam), so I can't imagine it having the same activation limit. Of course, I don't know this for a fact, it just seems the way it should be.
Far Cry 2 and Arkham Asylum say otherwise (search for "3rd-party DRM"). It's stupid to have two copy protection systems. They do it anyway.
If there are activation limits on the Steam version of Torchlight, I will be very sad, indeed. I'll feel good for having supported Runic, but I'll never actually install the game. I might really need to play it after my next reimage.
EDIT: Pretty sure this is the post that raised the question in the first place. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any hard answers about anything. It seems to imply that they're using Steam copy protection on Steam, but, well, I'm going to wait for hard evidence before I go off potentially wasting installation tokens.

Hmm. In there Travis says:
That doesn't sound too bad, even if it's part of Steam (and that thread suggests it will be on the Steam version, too; unexpected). Not a fan of limited activations no matter how limited, but I don't ever recall reinstalling a game in my life more than a few different times, and I don't expect to ever reach 10 activations, if that's the limit. I can live with it.We're probably just going to throw a bunch of unlocks on there - 10 or more. We don't really want it to be a hassle, and we'll probably use the absolute minimum protection possible for our own distributed versions. The reason for this is really that we want to do an unlock demo because, to be frank, they just sell better. If someone doesn't have to download the game, and then download it AGAIN if they want to buy that, it's just a better experience.
So my preference is to make it very very light DRM with a large-but-limited number of unlocks. If you buy the game, I don't care if you install it on every PC in your house.
I would feel a lot better about the whole thing if activations could be reclaimed during an uninstall. I guess it doesn't matter anyways since I only do a semi-yearly wipe and even on two computers being regularly maintained/moving up to new computers, that's still ten years of the game, maybe 5 if you do a yearly wipe. I don't think I play any games from when I was 9 years old, and if I do it sure isn't the original version of the game that I owned anyways.
FYI, Steam will use Steam DRM, not something else, so it'll be unlimited install Steam stuff.
We make a little more from our own site, but Steam has a lot of conveniences we can't provide, so I'm not gonna begrudge anybody getting it from there.
It's not THAT big a difference, and I'm just happy if anybody buys it at all!
Travis
Everytime you post in this thread it's more good news and I feel even better about giving you some of my money.
10 activations is still an infinite number away from the ideal.
Edit: Good news about Steam, though.
Great, I'll be grabbing a copy then. Thanks!
Looking forward to this. My only non-activation concern is if there will be enough enemy and item variety in the art or if it will be the same-looking enemies and items with larger numbers, but that's not a big enough worry to drive me off. Especially at $20. Also looking forward to the Matt Uelmen music while dungeon crawling.
Think I'll take the plunge on this, especially at that price point. Never did like Diablo 2 single player, but loved it online. Same with Titan Quest. Hope I can get into this.
There's about 230 unique weapon models,
roughly 45 'suit' looks ( helm, boots, chest, shoulders, gloves ) - 15 per class
( there are way more actual items and armor than this - that's just the visual differences )
something on the order of 40 or 50 unique monster types ( not counting reskins/variants )
7 distinct tilesets ( very distinct - none of that Fate nonsense )
about 45 minutes worth of new music from Matt
3 classes
15-16 unique class active skills per class, and 15-16 shared passives, and 25-30 spells ( learnables that come on scrolls )
loads of uniques, set items, socketables, item combination recipes, item enchantment, so on and so forth. We tried to cram in a good bit.
Travis
I apologize if this is the umpteenth time you've answered the question, but: will the future MMO look similar to this singleplayer game? I love the artwork you guys have put together here.
Does it include the awesome pet transformations from FATE?
I wanted to post more inane debate discussion regarding profit margins. You have now ruined that for me.
Amen.
I am sure some of you hardcore gamers have installed something more than ten times, but I sure as hell have not. Or is it just the principal that the the world/the man is limiting the access to a game you paid for? I just do not understand this gripe at all. Its 20 friggin dollars. I probably have more than 50 games I have only installed once. What if it was 50 installs? Would that still be a problem?

So.....an awesome Diablo-type game that's good and excellent and only $20 under normal circumstances and currently discounted 10% on Steam and the only drawback is that you have to play it by yourself? Since that's how I played Diablo 2 and loved every minute of it, I think I'm sold.
In fact, ordered.
Thanks, Travis - I'm looking forward to it. One week and counting.
For what it's worth, after an unexpected computer rebuild a few years back, I had to contact them for FATE since I lost my install key info, and they gave me no trouble in providing the info once they verified my personal data.
I suspect that Runic will be just as reasonable to deal with.
I don't know. 50 should probably not be much of a problem for most people. Then again take a game like Diablo II, Baldur's Gate, or even the original Half-Life; I couldn't begin to count the number of times I've installed those games on new systems since I first purchased them.
This is now the 10th best selling game on Steam, so good for Runic. I can't quite figure out why I'm looking forward to it since I detest randomly generated levels, but here I am, already pre-ordered and everything.
Pre-purchased 2x copies! The wife, who ONLY plays Diablo clones, is pretty pumped!
Maybe, though I like the art and the sort of steampunk-ish vibe. I also assume that through the course of a single game the levels aren't randomized, just when you start a new one, so maybe it won't bother me that much (though it will when/if I start a new character). Also, Sacred 2 made want to play an action RPG that was better than Sacred 2, so maybe this'll fit the bill. It seems like the best bet out there right now at any rate.
