Just right click Torchlight in your my games menu in steam and click on show manual.
How is this game for someone who never played Diablo games? It is rare that a game comes that my laptop will actually run well, but this one looks like it might be OK (I have no idea if my graphics card is good enough, but the other system reqs seem fine). I was thinking of picking this up, but I was wondering if it is the sort of game that asumes you already know how to play this sort of thing.
There is actually a netbook setting that if you don't like the way it runs you can put it in that mode and it'd be sure to run.
I imagine though that your laptop should run it just fine.
It is very, very easy to learn how to play. Diablo is the same way, really. The complexities are mostly in how you equip your character and build out your skills and stats--and combat tactics--but that's something you'll figure out as you go along. The fundamental play mechanic is extremely accessible. I wasn't kidding when I said that you don't need a manual.
You can enabled netbook mode which tanks the graphics but lets it run beautifully on my intel chipset having laptop. As for how easy it is to get into, as far as I can tell so far the skills(unlocking down a tree based on level, 3 different categories), attributes and items work the same as Diablo, but the combat and pet interaction is the same as Fate (except more explosions).
It's very easy to get into and you can choose easy mode if you just want to learn the ropes and build a character, then start over (or change it mid way? I don't know) at a harder difficulty when you know what you are doing and want to be challenged.

Cool, thanks for the info. I always feel like I'm kinda guessing when it comes to getting a PC game to run. Pretty much Plants vs Zombies and World of Goo are the only things I play on my PC. HL2 plays...but it's kinda choppy, maybe 30 frames/sec at it's best (though I do rather like it anyway).
EDIT: Yeah, maybe easy might be a good place for me to start, mouse and keyboard can be a bit...problematic...for me.
The manual will load if I use IE 8, but not if I use Firefox or Chrome. How old school is that?
Steam is pretty hostile to all browsers that aren't IE. If you want flash navigation in their store, it requires that you install the special IE version of Flash (with ActiveX). And anything that triggers a browser window (like some screenshots) always opens an IE window, no matter what your default browser is. That's #2 on my list of Steam beefs, right after the manual thing.
So far I am LOVING the game. I haven't played very far, but everything is just so focused and polished. The interface is fantastic (though keybindings would be really, really nice), the graphics are great, and the combat is wonderfully meaty. Honestly, this game is like a lite version of what I was hoping Diablo III would be. Naturally, I now expect a lot more out of Diablo III.
But, oh god, I want Co-op in the game, it begs for it. It pleads for it.
Any way to transfer characters from one pc to another?
It's funny, I wouldn't even have thought of this until Valve mentioned Steamworks Cloud, and now I am vaguely expecting new games to have this ability. Not a HUGE deal though. I'm an alt-oholic anyway.
Anyway, I just dropped in here to say that as an avowed Nethack-lover and Diablo-... well, not hater - it just leaves me lukewarm -... not-lover, I am really digging Torchlight. The execution (UI, combat feel, art, extra bits such as talents and RNG merchant) is superb, the loot is delicious, and I can't wait for what you guys come up with next!
Edit: haha, the Steam feed is pretty amusing. The amount of "**** now owns Torchlight" is just ... impressive. Congrats, I think!

I am pleased that Torchlight runs mostly fantastically on a netbook.
That -is- rather enticing.
Question - how come some of my spells on the toobar I can right-click to cast them from that menu (without having to hit the hotkey) but others I cannot? I CAN right-click my Identify spell, and my Ember Shield but I cannot right-click to summon the flaming sword or my golem, for example?
Also, I got my Charm up to level 3 (+2 from a great helm) but none of the spells I thought would be charm (flaming sword) are any better?
Related question - how do I know what school of magic (charm, defense, offense) a spell is from? I didn't really notice it anywhere...
Have a level 6 character. Enjoying it so far. I like the cartoon style quite a bit. I was a bit worried that it would feel too much like Fate. It does but it has enough of its own voice to shake off the stigma. At least for me. I'm planning on buying additional copies as gifts.
It runs on my HP 110 Mini netbook and looks nice, too!
I was afraid that alchbot summons would suck after watching the videos on livestream. However, with pet mastery and alch bot pumped up they seem to hold their own on Hard difficulty :) Great game!
This game is awesome. I've only played for about an hour so far, and the only thing that I can think of that would make the game better would be a way to vacuum up all the loot like you can in Sacred 2. Either that, or have a "loot all" command that makes your character automatically run around and pick up all the items on screen. It's nice that you automatically suck up all the gold as you run over, but I still get annoyed having to click so much to loot everything. Borderlands could use that type of command as well, I think.
I played for a couple of hours and am really enjoying it.
One nitpick, my warrior dude has a debuff aura that I need to recast every two minutes. It would be pretty nice if it was just on constantly and slowed my mana regen by X/sec or "reserved" a portion of my mana like in titan quest.
3 hours to level ten with "The Hammer" and "Scratchy". I thought I would need to be eased in after time away from smashy-clicky Diablo-esque games. If you have any familiarity at all, definitely start above "Normal". I always underestimate my skills in coming back to some genres. Flying through. My pet never gets close to dying. Should start over, but probably will not. :)
Everything is so simply laid out and I am already taking a lot of the cool features for granted. I even like the outlines when you go behind a wall or obstacle. THe look and feel of it are perfect, the damage effects and floating damage/crit. thingies are cool. There is so much going on, but nothing really gets in the way. Maybe during boss fights it gets a bit hectic, but the copious amounts of flashing light and explosions make it all worth while.
I am sure there is other cool stuff I am leaving out, but you all will cover it. Must sleep/work/come back to Torchlight.
Apologies if this has already been asked and I missed it, but what's the recommended difficulty setting for established ARPG fans?
I just leveled a Destroyer up to lvl 7 on Normal and I'm loving it, but it's too easy; I haven't yet come close to dying.
I'm not looking for a hardcore experience, but I am looking to recreate a little bit of that fear I felt when I first started playing Diablo, got to The Butcher, and realized he could totally hand me my ass -- that I actually had to fear him for a while until I leveled up a bit. Haven't experienced anything close to that so far.
Does Normal difficulty start to ramp up or should I re-roll a character on Hard?

Is there a shared stash that I'm not seeing? I'm finding lots of nice items that I would love to hold for another character. If there's no way to transfer items between characters I'm going to be sad. :(
This game is just dangerous to play before what should be my bedtime.
I would also like an autoloot feature. Mostly, I'd like to train my loyal pet to automatically pick up the white level items; I don't mind so much sorting through anything with enchantments.
