    What's a good video encoder?

Looking for a good video encoder that supports multicore (optimally quadcore) and 64-bit. There's a Windows Media Encoder x64 edition, but it's about four years old and I've heard it's not that great.

good question. I'd like to know the answer as well.
I have RiverPast's Crazi Video Pro. It's a fire and forget encoder/converter that can accept and output to any video codec you have instlled on your system.
Only downside is it's incredibly slow as it essentially streams the video in raw format before encoding it to the output format. So if you're encoding a 2 hour video, it will take 2 hours to encode. Try 10 of them and you have a twenty hour time line.

As of recently, Handbrake will now take any file as input rather than just DVDs, and has more robust queuing. It also appears to support at least quad cores. Don't know about 64-bit though. But it's open source, so should be available for 64-bit somewhere.

    then use ATI's offering

the fastest by a mile if you have a 4870x2. I didn't mention gpu enabled apps as they are not for everyone.

The download doesn't seem to be available yet, at least not for 64-bit.

    Itwas released ages ago.

I have vista 64-bit and badaboom 1.1 (there's no x64 version of it), works fine on my end...

the drivers have to have support for "stream processing", and the app should work.

I use XVid4PSP and it has multithreading. Encoding is sped up considerably on my Core 2 Quad when I use it to encode videos to X360/PS3/iPod/iPhone/PSP MP4.

I don't know anything about ATI's encoder, but 64-bit-ness of an application is not really going to buy you much for things that are offloading all of the heavy lifting to the GPU, so I wouldn't get hung up on using a 32-bit application in this situation.

The thing is, I've got the 64-bit ATI drivers installed, and the ATI encoder is basically a plug-in to the drivers. You even use the program through the Catalyst Control Center.

The ATI AVIVO Encoder app is broken for 64bit Vista and is not available. And the output quality from it is really terrible anyway. Badaboom's quality is a little better than AVIVO, but still far short of software based encoders. If you need a speed up you could import a PCI-E add in card with the SPURSengine from Japan. It's a modification of the Cell arcitecture that has 4 SPEs and runs at 1 Ghz. The encoding software available using SPURSengine acceleration is fast and high quality.

A Japanese company also just announced they are releasing a software package that will actually use your PS3 to encode HD h.264 over your network. You install the control program on a windows computer and boot your PS3 into their custom linux distro from a flash drive. Then it will farm out encoding jobs to your PS3 for quick work over the wired network.

Yeah, what Brad said. The GPU-accelerated encoders are currently pretty crap in terms of quality.
