I join in this rant. I eventually caved and re-ordered CGM anyway, just in time to catch Tom's controversial SWG-bashing (whew!). But seriously, let us renew without the damn CDs, you bastards.
I just have to rant for a minute.
Once again, I have let all of my magazine subscriptions lapse because I'm never offered a resubscription without the CD. This isn't specific to a one publisher, since I'm now without CGM, CGW, and Maximum PC.
I don't want the CDs. I never get the magazines with the CD, even when I pick up PCGamer on the newsstand. How come every renewal notice only allows me to resubscribe with the CD? Is there some secret publishing rule I don't know about? What a pain in the ass.
There, now I feel better.

most cheap-magazine web sites sell magazines without the cd. i believe this violates some "compensating the people whose work you enjoy" etiquette because these sites are often selling at a loss and money isn't getting back to the columnists.
someone here will know much better than I about the biz, naturally.
Until very recently, I had a subscription to PCGamer without the CD. Renewed it a couple of times, until this last go-'round.
Bestdeal Magazine CGW $5.70/year
Go to Buy.com.
You can subscribe to Maximum PC, sans the Disc, for like $12.00.
Call the subscription phone # inside the mag and just request a sub without the CD. I've done it plenty of times. 8)
Maximum PC randomly decided to hound the fuck out of me with free issues. I'd never even read it before.... No idea how they got my addy. EGM (yuck) does this too. Anyone else or is someone gag-gifting me with a half decent magazine and a terrible magazine?

I'm currently getting CGW and CGM without disks. Nevertheless, I have a giant stack of gaming mag CD's falling off the shelf in the corner. I have never looked at most of them. Broadband, baby!
Oh, come on now. Real people on the other end of business phones don't exist; everyone knows that. Didn't you ever watch Married with Children? A prerecorded voice just tells you to press button after button as you try to get to the option you want. Meanwhile, your desk calendar flips to the next day on its own...Originally Posted by Tyjenks
Like Stroker mentioned, I would love to resubscribe directly and give a little more money to the mags. On the other hand, that site Chet linked has all three I mentioned, and the referral link will kick a little money back to POE, so that will salve my conscience.
The sad state of customer service has jaded me well beyond calling some toll-free number on a blow-in card. Assuming I escape from voicemail jail, I would get a call center in India that is only borderline helpful. I would never assume I could get through to a human with the authority to handle a special request.
You're lucky to have that choice, you can't even get magazines without CDs/DVDs in the UK, which is why they all cost five quid (about $7.50). I bought them before I was on broadband for the large patches and demos, now I don't bother.Originally Posted by Supertanker
