(and apparently there was a large battle at the Western gate, as I found a whole bunch of dead goblins and equipment there, multiple waves I guess?)
I like this fortress more and more. Come back little goblins....

Yeah, Nixon66 and Quatoria developed incredible unarmed combat skills - they dodge everything!

In the event of a Goblin Emergency, you should ring the alarms and tell civilians to stay in the shelters until it is safe. If one civilian dies, you'll have a spiral as every other dwarf goes to try to fetch the corpse.

Pumping should only work one Z level. Calistas has an excellent idea on the pouring magma to get rid of aquifers. I wonder if there is a way to designate a stockpile of bauxite stone so you can make bauxite floodgates (magma safe).

I had my entire civilization topple because of this once.

My settlers arrived at the top of the ridge, and as they made their way down... they were pounced upon by a giant cave spider, who shot webs to paralyze my war-dogs. The settlers had no choice but to fight the beast, they were quickly dispatched, I was relieved that no one from my fortress was harmed, and I would just have to wait another year for settlers. (hopefully the traders would dispatch the spider) I went back to my fortress and noticed that I had very few dwarves around.... I thought in horror... oh no...

They all gleefully marched to their doom. One by one they attempted to move body and were interrupted by giant cave spider. And my fortress lay in ruin at the hands of an insane spider-beast.

It sucked having my civilization destroyed, but it was fun as hell to watch that little spider fly around killing the shit out of my workers. This is one game where failing is just as fun as succeeding.

There are options to automatically forbid items dropped by killed characters to prevent this problem.

You can also be careful about which jobs are switched on for each dwarf. Once the population is high enough, you can afford to specialise - I generally use peasants as all-purpose haulers, whilst everyone else has the hauling jobs switched off.

Well this happened year one of my first game, and you learn this game through failing, and if you can handle that... it is very rewarding.

I am going to start my pirate themed aar soonish. A guy has a location for me featuring an arctic environment, magma, an ocean and a glacier. Oh, I think it is haunted too. Sounds like a recipe for disaster!

I would have to dig and irrigate for farming, including sorting desalination using pumps!

Is Quakebells still drafting new dwarves? I'd like to be one. I'm not particular, though one that lurks about a lot would fit me.

EFG hasn't finished his tenure. I fear something horrible has taken place.

I would like to volunteer as a dwarf name. I only wish I could volunteer as a player, but sadly I suck at DF. Perhaps I'll try Calistas tutorials.

As for a profession I'm just a former IT dwarf, down on his luck due to poor economy in my old region. I'll happily choose general labor or hauling as I try to rebuild my 401k with hard earned gold.

My tutorial is a good place to start! Very good! Part 6 up in a few hours.

And yes, we wait on EFG.

Sorry to keep you guys waiting, I'm procrastinating the inevitable terrible things that are going to take place. And Skipper: I guarantee you that you are better at Dwarf Fortress than me, and they let me run the place for a year.

Part of the reason I'm taking so long is that every 4 seconds something I want to talk about happens. 4 seconds after I load up the game, this happens:

We've been made into a barony. Yay? Anyways some nobles arrive, which as I understand it is a bad thing as I'll now have to accommodate them and meet their demands (but a little bit of a good thing as I have no real ambitions of my own other than a scrapped vanity project, so this will be what I do).

I'm browsing through the status area to see what's happening, and what do I find?

This is unacceptable. I believe I have found this winter's sacrifice >:)

Wow, time moves so slowly with 96 dwarves, I still haven't seen any indication that spring has ended. I finished the dangerous magma channel already too, complete with floor grates over the magma for whatever reason. I'm guessing it will be useful to the next person that takes the reigns.

Aeon221 decided since his one-hit-wonder statue creation he is too important to dig suicidal magma tunnels, so he spent what I'm guessing was several weeks "On Break" while Tom Chick dug out the passage.

Anyone who hasn't yet should check my last post, it is updated with the rest of my spring-shenanigans. Summer has come, which means it's time for me to do something borderline homicidal... I know!

The lava moat got ruined somehow by water, so I designated the walls to be dug out to re-fill the chamber with magma, fixing the moat. Aeon221 panics when lava seeps through where he was digging, and perishes. The other miners run for their lives, surviving.

There is a sudden rash of thieves running off with shoes and pants (like one each) and I look over to the east field and find mountain gnomes frolicking. What the hell? They aren't doing anything, and none of the dwarves seem concerned, but I thought it was weird.

I was looking at statuses for something interesting to post, and I came across this. Remember Quatoria? Previous rulers will remember that he is basically a God walking upon the earth in terms of strength (and he has only gotten stronger since I started). Well it turns out his massive strength has caused him to stop caring about anything. I really hope he doesn't go insane and kill 50 dwarves or anything like that.

Please don't kill us all man.

Pretty sure that means that witnessing deaths (of comrades, pet war dogs, etc.) won't give him unhappy thoughts. It's the top trait of a series including things like "He has witnessed death."

Can someone explain to me exactly how I'm supposed to force a dwarf to stand on the sacrifice bridge? I found it and its lever but I don't know how to get Rollo^H^H^H^H^Hthe sacrifice dwarf to stand on it.

Draft him into his own squad and then station his one man squad on the bridge. Or invent your own way of killing him.

Something weird going on with the saves... last update may have been erased I'm not sure, it may have reverted back to early summer again for some reason. Anyways, I didn't do much other than kill Aeon so it's no big deal. I've almost finished a little side project for the sacrifice, but first:

Juan Rayo has entered a strange mood and claimed a Craftsdwarves' Shop. I wonder what he'll make!

Depending on your save settings there may be multiple saves, made each season? So you need to look at the folder name instead of the fortress/location name.

At least I think so, I always disable those settings.
