Screw walls. Do a mini-Quakebells and erect an entire above-ground fortress covering your dig-down entrance.

Damn, I hope my namesake goes nuts and kills everyone.
I think there are 2 nixon66s too.
Every day my name doesn't get added to the roster is another day I check off with a Lady Gillette on my wrist.
The Case Pond is going to be useful. We'll dig a 3-channel deep path parallel to the existing magma channel. This will minimize the amount of rock grates and surface digs I'll need to cover. Oh yeah, Case's bones are still here.
Our miners keep running into damp hidden aquifers. We'll have to map them out. Since we have so many pump operators I suspect I can drain any aquifers we find.
Oh. The good news first. It seems we may not have to pump the water out as it seems to like to come up by itself. The bad news is this is just under our magma reservoir and workshops.
Clayw kinda lost her baby. Not really sure where the baby is. Clay is at the main drawbridge. Maybe she dropped it in the moat. Her husband LK is sleeping peacefully, unaware
(it's not showing up in Stocks -> Corpses)
Late Summer:
Hunter Matt Keil and Jab encounter a sasquash. They mortally wound it but fall. Quatoria's doggie Fikod finishes the immobile sasquash. Ordering another dozen coffins. I think our military will hunt from now on. This also stresses the need for proper armor!
I just had an idea. Obsidian is just as powerful as steel weapons. While I am mining out deeper magma channels, I may want to create an another floodgate-controlled magma conduit that will meet a water conduit. The bedroom for any future hammerers will be in the water portion of this Great Machine.

Madman! You'll destroy us all! Specifically those of us who have to mine this lunacy!
Dwarven caravan arrives.
We trade away: Unusable armor, wooden armor and shields. Rock crafts.
Steel goods gained: steel crossbows, steel picks, steel spear, steel chain, greaves, boots, 225 bolts, shields, bucklers, 3 steel anvils, trap components. A phlethora of gems, meats, cheeses, drinks, and other steel goods.
Goblin ambush: Tyjenks RIP. McCullough RIP. Cut down a dozen goblins. Two flee. Jpinard reaches a 13:1 K:D ratio. No dogs or soldiers harmed in this ambush.
The caravan leaves and it is early autumn. No more large projects, we must prepare for the transition and pick a sacrifice.
We will try to complete widening the magma channel. We will try to wall in sublevel 2. The water keeps seeping in and we will try to isolate the damage.
Will try to complete tonight so another can take up for weekend.
Names fixed:
nixon66 (baby dupe) -> warlord of mars
Xpav (merchanic) -> wendellius
Economy is booming. According to Grand Treasurer Prolix, wealth increased 2349 gp/dwarf to 3617 gp/dwarf since the start of our enlightened guidance. I expect Nobles to grace us with their presence soon. Furniture is ordered.
I am ordering our squads to wear the new steel armor.

Dogs are placed at the entrance to catch any theives sneaking in.
TimJames and Nixon66 have their first girl, Wheelkick! Shift6 is happy he has a new sister.
Lesslucid, expert carpenter, finds a goblin thief. He chokes it to death instead of running away like an elf. A minor wound to the thigh should heal by year's end.
We may be growing too many crops - Too much ends up in the refuse pile, rotting.
I've asked the village liason for gold, iron, and steel bars. Ammo. Plate armor. Flux.
Mayor John Many Jars is peeves nobody is making the three golden rings he wanted. He's not satisfied with Pyrite. They'll pay top price for goblets and toys. Rock crafts are ordered.
Water flood contained. Future leader should keep an eye on this.
I unlocked the door to see who would run out first.
Houngan was just closer to the exit. Orinoco will test the lava flow first hand. TIME TO MAKE THE CHANNELS!
SUCCESS! Orinoco roasts.
I shoulda put more floodgates so I could shut off the flow. Oops.
Ckessel, our armorer is possessed. He brings some iron bars to the forge then immediatly loses it when he realizes there's insufficient magma to power it. He pins down Dungeon Master Cyranix and begins to choke him. Cyranix passes out from the pain - When all seemed hopeless, Extrabags runs in and whisks him away to safety! No legendary armor. Sigh.
Quatoria arrives soon after and frags CKessel. Cyranix RIP dies from his wounds.
Warlord of Mars RIP, Baby, dies to heat. Again, there is no corpse remaining to give a clue. Her mother Warren was resting from wounds, whereas father Therlun was at a party. Could it be goblins?
Squads engage in live target practice against garden gnomes and unicorns.
Designated south dorm tower level +3 as food storage as the trade depot is still filled with fish and meat we've purchased.
Note to self: Floodgates should be made of bauxite unless you want them to melt.
Fire snake is spotted in the Great Magma Channel. Crossbowmen are told to stand by but unable to acquire line of sight.
Suggestions for next ruler:
rename wisefool's profession as ex-ruler
when organizer and manager reach legendary suggest putting next draftee to do it...
watch water downstairs
extend magma channels
solve baby disappearance
furnish rooms for incoming nobles.
Assign future hammerers interesting bedroom locations (note they will each bring a high quality steel hammer.)
Idea: Fill the entire water well with magma then open up floodgate.
People who want dwarves named after them:
Tankero
Alan Au: Mechanic
Dave Perkins is already in the fortress but he wishes to train as a soldier. Suggest career change.

Final wealth: 356,547. Population: 77 We more than doubled wealth. Wisefool, the Young Republican will hopefully grow up to be a skilled and productive member of society.
Great work. Looks like you have a lot of blood on your hands. Better wash up.
Who's gonna be next? Certainly some of the most exciting adventures of Quakbells are still to come. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing how well she defends herself from the inevitable goblin/unicorn seige.
I volunteered but be warned, the sum of my experience is from Calista's tutorial, and I didn't even follow his instructions exactly. Give me a day or two to properly follow the tutorial and dick around a little then I'll see if I can manage Quakebells for a year without a fiery apocalypse or a bloody unicorn rampage.
Another volunteer for Quakebells.
Fantastic read so far.
Lemon: to play or be named?
EFG: you're up, unless you volunteer someone else to go first while you learn.
It's late for me right now, I'm going to bed. If, while I'm asleep, someone else steps up to play then I'd be fine with that and go after them, but if not, tomorrow I'll finish the tutorial and (probably not) be ready to take the reigns of Quakebells.
Cool, I'm a pump operator.
Hmm, sounds kinda naughty.
Yay, I did something! Choking people is my thing in real life too, obviously.
Uh, that's all I had...
I hit some combo of keys and my dwarves are running around the fortress at 10x speed or something. I don't want them to, but can't find the hotkey combo to press to reverse this. Can anyone help me?
If my soldier dwarf needs a career change, then I opt for mason. Or farmer. Or whatever is needed. My momma will just be sad.
Another issue: I'm talking to the liaison from the dwarf caravan, and he's asking me what goods we're interested in. There's a column named Type and one named Good. I can't figure out how to arrow left to get to the Type column. The instructions suggest: Alt 8 Alt 293, which must be code for.. something.

Sorry I can't help you with this. I've tried for a few minutes this morning. If you figure it out please post it though. That would be pretty usefull once in a while.
I think for the other issue you have to use the (+) and (-) keys to change the type and the up and down arrows for the goods. I think.
Wow, I didn't even know there was such a command. Once you figure out how to do and undo it, be sure to post it. Could be really useful when things are going smoothly.
There isn't such a command, at least that I've ever heard of.
What it is or sounds like is that the FPS cranked up likely because of pathfinding going well. You can check the init file at \Dwarf Fortress 2\data\init
It'll have a command you can turn to YES to see what its running at
-------------
Change this to YES if you want to see an FPS counter at the top left.
[FPS:YES]
-------------
And you can change the max FPS in the following command, that's the fastest the simulation will run at.
-------------
Use this to set the maximum frame rate during play. The movies are always capped at 100. A frame in this case is not graphical but related to the movement speed of a creature. A healthy, unencumbered dwarven peasant takes one step every 10 frames.
[FPS_CAP:200]
----------
The name XPav is a pround one that must be passed through the ages.
Dave: trade liaison want screen, scroll the type lists with whatever your alternate scrollis, the items list with your normal scroll. If you are following my tutorial the other scroll is alt+down or up arrow. Normally, it's something else.
Is my woodcutter still alive through all this bloodshed, or did he never get added to the populace?
This is great, mishaps and sacrifices and all. :D
Add Runesword Forger. And I want to forge runeswords. That is, if you CAN forge runeswords. Short of that, I'm good for choking goblins or getting kidnapped or faceplanting in lava or whatever.
