Special When Lit just felt like another documentary to me, it didn't have any kind of special hook to draw me in. But as you said, it totally did what it set out to do.
Chasing Ghosts was worth it alone for the part where Captain Awesome explains how Missile Command is a more macho game than Pac-Man.

Meh. I can't really recommend it unless you are a huge fan of 300-style melodrama and action. Considerably less action, at that.

    No, but it's super-pretty.

And while it evokes 300 pretty strongly in a lot of ways, I think it's a better movie. Which is not saying much because I thought 300 was utterly terrible.

It had the Matrix thing going for it, in that it was the first movie of its particular type (stylistic beefcake combat slowmo drama.) Immortals is the second, and while I do actually kinda dig the depiction of the Gods in action until the final battle, it just has no luster.

Watched this last night and quite enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Felt it went on a bit long towards the end, but overall, pretty well done and entertaining.

I thought 300 was way, way better than Immortals. Immortals is derivative and the plot is downright idiotic and full of crazy holes. A lot of bad things can be said of 300, but it was at least clear, innovative in some ways, and action-packed.

300 is dumber than a sack of hammers. Immortals is too, of course, but at least it has a really killer sense of visual style and some mildly interesting supernatural battles.

I dunno, all I remember about is mud and rock and brown, except for the gods. It sits in my memory like a Quake level.

Also: I didn't care for the depiction of the Titans.

Edit: Since I'm frequently incredibly wrong about things I remember I started watching it again. In the first ten minutes there are literally no other colors than white/gray/black, reds, and gold. I think my memory is correct, blue, yellow, green, and purple make no appearance in this film.

I'll take Tarsem for visuals over Zack Snyder any old day. I think The Fall is probably the only actually good movie he's made, whereas Snyder's done a couple, but he knows how to make things striking and pretty. At least for my tastes. Also, Immortals has Mickey Rourke chewing the scenery as King Hyperion. He's wasted, of course, but he still brings a certain something to the proceedings.

Anyway. That's about enough arguing over the relative merits of bad movies for me.

Edit: I'm backing this whole thing out, I forgot there's a proto-minotaur story involved. Still, they're playing fast and loose with mythology.

double edit: Now I'm watching the damned thing again, and they animated a left-handed bow instead of right-handed as the character is drawing it. How do I get a job in Hollywood as a "guy who knows about these things?"

Well, yeah. Honestly, I'm not sure what the point of involving the real mythology at all was, but it's not like it had a coherent script.

And no hard feelings are involved. I just feel kind of silly arguing about whether one bad movie is better than another when they're both pretty bad. :)

Does he have a proper-handed bow? These things matter.

Recommend Goon, starring Sean William Scott. It's about what you'd expect with some great fights and some pretty decent hockey action. The part that made it watchable is that instead of a real goon, Scott plays a really nice guy who just happens to be dumb as a brick and absolutely tough. A nice film about what it means to be on a team and respect the team, as well.

Not a spoiler per se, but I love the scene where another guy spits on the seal of the team on the locker room floor and he gets on his hands and knees, silently, to wipe it up.

Netflix just got updated with new episodes of Breaking Bad (Season 4) and Louie (Season 3, I think, I haven't checked yet).

Breaking Bad yes, Louie no. False alarm with their "Recently Updated" banners.

Yeah, sorry. I was watching both yesterday, and last night they both suddenly had the "New Episodes" tag on them. I checked Breaking Bad to make sure, but didn't double check on Louie.

That happens all the time. There must be a bug in their code somewhere.

They also tag stuff as New or having New Episodes if they add new audio or subtitle tracks. It's how stuff they've had available for streaming forever suddenly gets a "New" tag.

I'm so glad they added Season 4 when they did. I just got to the end of Season 3 this morning. What a cliffhanger! (A first for the series right? I don't remember seasons 1 and 2 ending on cliffhangers). I'm glad I got to see the 4th season opener before going to work.

That's possibly my single favorite season of a TV series. And the ending is just awesome.

Any nudity would be more than I remember. Are we talking the same Young Indiana Jones?

Yeah, I was surprised. When he goes to Paris at age 11 and meets Picasso there's a scene with a nude model you see from behind. Later, when she's putting on a robe you also get a glimpse of her breast. I'm wondering if some of this was disguised by the overscan area and general poor quality of broadcast television in the era.
