I really enjoyed the script, apart from the obligatory gross-out humor. It's one of the very few screenplays that I've laughed out loud while reading. Pretty curious to see the movie.
Saw this today, not because I thought it would be great but because I like to go to matinees on the weekend and I didn't want to see HSM3. It was better than I expected.
Has anyone else seen it? Let me just say that there's one heartbreaking scene, at a party, and now I'm in love with Elizabeth Banks.
Other than that, standard-issue Kevin Smith, complete with Jason Mewes.

I liked it a lot. Kevin Smith still has the humor in him. My only problem with the film is that I think it spent too much time focused on the central characters' relationship, forgetting to add some humor during those scenes.
I can't wait for the uncensored Blu-ray release. I saw Kevin Smith talk at the Comic Con, and he said they had to make multiple submissions to the ratings board to get it approved for an "R."
He's said on Smodcast that in the end they didn't have to cut a single thing from their original submission.
Oh. Well, that's not what he said at Comic Con, but I can't prove it or anything because recordings weren't allowed. The movie's release'd been held up and everything, he said; they didn't have a solid release date by late July, when the Comic Con was held.
It did have to be submitted more than once, however he was able to appeal the ruling and get the rating reduced to an R.
The only scene I can think of that MIGHT have warranted something more than an R involved a fully nude Jason Mewes thrusting between the legs of a female co-star while filming a scene in the titular (tee hee) porno movie. There were no kibbles and bits showing, but it was more explicit than most sex scenes I've seen in R-rated movies.
BTW, if you see this movie, stay through the credits.
I read that the movie is completely bombing at the box office. It was estimated to make near 17 million and currently its tracking to make barely 6 million. I don't think its the movie itself but instead of the lame marketing. They couldn't even stay consistant on what to call it.
Saw it yesterday and I thought it was very good. It plays out more like a Judd Apatow flick (one of the good ones) than a Kevin Smith movie
So what is the difference between a Judd Apatow movie and a Kevin Smith movie with production values?
Star Wars references.
Also, Jay and Silent Bob.
Well, at Comic Con this year, Apatow did call Smith a big influence. Smith joked about how Apatow's movies make way more, though; heh.
Yeah, the biggest difference is box office receipts!
From what I remember of that smodcast, he said that they had to cut some stuff out... but he felt like he was going to cut it anyways. But the resubmitted and cut version got stopped again. And he fought until he made it through with no cuts to the already cut version.
Kinda confusing, but the movie is still cut for the "R" rating a bit. But it sounds like Smith is happy with what he got to do, so that is good.
Kevin Smith has always said that he's dependable for making $30m movies. If you want your movie to make $30m, he's your man.
On the other hand, his DVDs are always rock solid releases. His fanbase can always be counted on to buy just about anything. Even Jersey Girl did well on DVD.
I really, really don't understand Seth Rogen's appeal. Or how hollywood expects us to believe all these hot chicks in his movies would even look at him, let alone fall for him, or especially, let him insert his sweaty genitalia into them.
Well, let's ask the hot chicks of the forum their opinion...

Absolutely terrible movie, not one sustained laugh. Just utterly amateurish on Smith's part, almost like he's just half-heartedly phoning in his scripts at this point. Definitely his worst effort and I can't imagine any studio funding his productions if he pulls another one of these out of his keyboard.
It wasn't bad, but totally predictable and the same type of jokes that are in every Smith film. Elizabeth Banks is very easy on the eyes.
So what did I miss by not staying until after the credits (which I find very annoying)?
One thing that bugs me about his films are that they all feel so... similar.
I am still going to see this one though...
