    RTS game recommendations for Mac?

I've been itching to play an RTS game but I'm so far out of the loop at this point I'm not sure what would be good for my Mac.

I really liked the Red Alert games but is there something better than that now? I'm not really into hyper complicated battles - I like a manageable number of units and the game being more focused on defense rather than constant attacking (if that makes sense at all). I like fortifying my base and watching the enemy smash against the rocks trying to get at me.

I also like the Dune RTS game that was out a few years back.

Any immediate recommendations come to mind?

Is this a PowerPC Mac? I know you think the PC market is deservedly dying, but the native Mac gaming market is a wasteland, between the move to Intel and Boot Camp. I think C&C3 was indeed the last major RTS released for Mac...Inside Mac Games is pretty good about indie releases, and I don't see any other RTSes in the last year (although http://www.batteryacid.org/biofilm might barely qualify).

No, it's an Intel MacBook Pro running Leopard. I see lots of RTS games (old games are fine as long as they don't require OS 9) on Amazon, I just need recommendations on which ones might work for me.

Age of Empires III, with the expansions, including Asian Dynasties, is an awesome RTS.

Adding an RPG-like experience-earning and level-up mechanic to your city and unlocking cards to play in the game was a design stroke of mad genius.

I Boot Camped my Mac in order to run games. Works pretty well for just about anything.

Yeah, but I don't want to boot into Windows. I bought a Mac for a reason. :)

You don't need anything else. MAYBE Starcraft, if available, but #2 is just around the corner, and a port is almost guaranteed.

Then you chose the wrong OS for gaming, unfortunately.

Rise of Nations is not a Universal Binary, thus it will run as emulated PowerPC code on your Intel MacBook Pro. The performance will probably still be fine, but just worth a mention.

Age of Empires 3: The Asian Dynasties is probably your best bet right now.

Command & Conquer Generals: Deluxe Edition (includes the Zero Hour expansion) is a reasonable choice as well.

OK, playing AOE III now - it's fun! I wish I could zoom the window back further but it definitely looks like a game I could spend some time with. I have the Asian Dynasties here as well but I'm not going to install that until I'm more comfortable with the base game. I don't want to add new information on top of a brand new game.

I just ordered a copy of C&C Generals Deluxe, so we'll see how that plays out.
