    World of Goo

Since I couldn't find a thread devoted to World of Goo, I wanted to point out that it comes out next week, but preorders should start going out today.
I haven't received my email yet, but am near to soiling myself with anticipation.

This pretty much made me fall out of my chair.

    Complimentary Profanity Pack to replace
voices in the game with ambiguous naughty words. F**k!
    Gotta love silly game devs.

This is, I have concluded, the game of Schindler's List.

It's also gorgeous, beautifully scored, and as inventive, substantive and outright good as Portal or Braid.

What's the platform of choice for this? Should I dust off the old Wii and get it out of the basement? Or will it be out for Steam, so I shouldn't bother? Is it better with the mouse or Wiimote?

I pre-ordered a week ago after the PCG UK guys started raving about it on their podcast. The RPS review was similarly...gooey.

I played the preview build of Act 1 for pre-order folks and absolutely love it. My 2 year old son now will tug on my leg and say 'goo balls' and want to sit on my lap while I play World of Goo. He laughs and shouts UNATCO! along with the goo balls. I'll probably cave and get this on the Wii in addition to the PC.

As of last night my Goo Tower at Goo Corp HQ was 183rd highest in the world. I'm certain it's already dipped considerably in the hours since I played last night.

The Wii version has 4-player cooperative. It's really fun to play in groups. Levels that require precision can be pretty frustrating, with everyone doing everything at once, but it's also a lot more fun to fail as a group.

Support Kyle and Ron, buy both? ;)

This should make everyone super happy as well. From the email:

We are trying an experiment: World of Goo has absolutely no copy protection or DRM at all, since we want to give you (and everyone) the best experience we can.

The preview build activated online against a code in your pre-order confirmation email. I emailed 2Dboy to see if I could also install it on my work PC. Kyle personally responded with an "Of course you can. Just don't get caught."

I hear if the group is coordinated there's also quite a bit more they can do as far as strategies.

    Download server... so slow.

From what I heard, coop might get added to the PC version via patch.

Honestly, this is a bloody marvel. If you've played a better game than World of Goo this year, you have no taste.

(Er... I couldn't resist the line, but don't hold it against World of Goo. It's just adorable.)

    Just pre-ordered!
Man, this year I've bought Goo, TF2, WoW, and WAR!
Thats like more game buying than the five years before that combined.

I am waiting for Steam, but I would have preordered had I known there was no DRM.

    Short but great.

I got stuck for 20 minutes in one level and solved two levels (including the one I got stuck in) with somewhat unconventional Goo-control... I'd like to see youtube solutions for those two levels, because I cant imagine the "real" solution for them, but there must be some because my approaches were very odd :P.

I wish there were more cutscenes, and I was somewhat shocked by the cruelity the Goos are subject to :), but other than that its really great.

What happened to my post? I had a post after Pentadact and now it's gone.

Anyway, thanks for the tip Pentadact. I preordered.

I only pre-ordered a week ago.. no download link for me yet. Looking forward to it, I really enjoyed the demo. I hope the full one lets me run at higher resolution, though.

Bah it just messed up and stopped downloading, nothing for the past 40min's. So I pause it then restart it and of course the dl manager can't get it going again, 6 hours downloading just gone..

Well I guess I'll be able to play it thursday when I get back from work.

This is freakin' awesome. And I already have the tenth highest tower in the world. I fully expect to be dethroned when I get up in the morning, but ah well.

Also, I'm incredibly stuck on the bones level. Any tips?

Still waiting on my link, having ordered last week as well. Based on the forum scuttlebutt, it could take another day or so to get out all the keys. You'll still beat the 'official' release by 5 or 6 days with a pre-order.

I wonder if the swamped download server is the same one sending out the emails.

It's too bad it has no DRM otherwise I'd encourage someone to host a mirror.

Wow did I just say too bad it has no DRM?

At least maybe the slow emailing is helping the slow servers. Imagine if all emails had gone out at once.

This is definitely true. There are some levels that rely on conflicting systems (build sideways and attach balloons, but don't bend too much up or down). You can have one person build an done person attach balloons, and it works quite well.

The levels that rely on quick building before inability sets in are much easier, too. Four people can slop-build remarkably quickly...
