Popular movies outside the US in 2008

I always find it interesting to see what's popular outside of the US when it comes to money-making films. Here's the list so far in 2008, from Box Office Mojo (these are foreign box office only numbers):

    1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull $466,542,285
    2. The Dark Knight $448,900,000
    3. Kung Fu Panda $397,261,525
    4. Hancock $332,246,982
    5. Mamma Mia! $281,351,230
    6. Iron Man $253,515,000
    7. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian $237,321,654
    8. Sex and the City $236,123,809
    9. Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis $210,708,075
    10. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor $196,100,000
    11. 10,000 B.C. $174,287,727
    12. Wanted $147,332,567
    13. Jumper $141,836,027
    14. Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! $141,480,000
    15. What Happens in Vegas $131,350,000
    16. Astérix aux jeux olympiques $130,639,011
    17. The Incredible Hulk $109,264,559
    18. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street $99,623,163

As you can see, Indy is edging the Dark Knight, and Mamma Mia! is pretty big. Also, Kung Fu Panda did very well while Wall-E didn't appeal overseas. Iron Man is #2 in the US, but didn't fare as well elsewhere. Finally, 10,000 BC remains close to the top 10.

An interesting note is the movie at #9. It's a french comedy that is already slated for an english-language remake in a few years. The plot summary at IMDB is worth reading. :-)

Sorry, it pasted over nicely so I didn't realize until it was posted that the forum software had lost control of it. Fixed now!

Wall E was released a lot later overseas then it was in the states. That might affect sales quite a bit. Especially since it would be so much easier to pirate something like that.

Wall-E went on theaters on the 5th this month here in Sweden, so it's not fair to rate the popularity on these numbers. If Kung-fu Panda does better here than Wall-E then I'll be ashamed for all of us.

Wall-E will not be shown in Germany until mid of October. Unfortunately, that's quite normal for Pixar productions.
Iron Man is #2 in the US, but didn't fare as well elsewhere.
Certain comics and characters are not that well known outside NA. I'd also guess that comics are bigger in NA in general.
Finally, 10,000 BC remains close to the top 10.
    Ugh.

I'm officially ashamed of our country (and of our comedies).

The problem is that the list basically show which English language movies are the most popular globally.

Some really good, say, Italian movie may outperform US movies in Italy, but it just doesn't show up on this list.

Hey, I saw the one where they build a palace for Cleopatra, and it was actually pretty good. Not the greatest movie of all times, but pretty good. And they did a good job of updating the comics to the 21st century (though of course I love the Asterix comics).

    Also, Monica Belucci...

Yeah, the second one was actually funny and inventive. Pretty much what you expect from Asterix.

It's not like we're going to skew the results much anyway, but Wall-E still hasn't opened in New Zealand (or Australia, for that matter). Good job movie industry!
