Vista crashing on right-click Desktop icon

Seems to be caused by Securom. Appeared after I patched Grid to 1.2.

    Lovely.

I got this problem after I installed Rhapsody (on Vista).

I had to play around with the registry to fix it.

    Edit - or maybe it wasn't Rhapsody. Hrm... NWN2? I don't know.

Good, probably another nail in the coffin for silly DRM.
(Ah, who am I kidding, obnoxious DRM on games will be here ten years from now for sure...)

fix is: search your registry for CmdLineExt and delete all instances of keys with it. whee.

we're clearly criminals if we want to right-click on a desktop icon.

Its a bug in the command-line extension for SecuROM; the command line extension has been there for at least 7 years.

There is also a fix from SecuROM (I don't have the link at home) and the patch provider should re-release the patch with the fix in it.

This same problem affected the 1.01 patch to Mass Effect so we linked to the SecuROM fix and re-released the patch as 1.01a with the fix in it.

    Thanks for the reply Derek.

So...if I install ME 1.01a last, that should fix the securerom problem caused by Grid?

The fix to the command line extension is handled when you run the patched game. Here is the link to the fix hosted at BioWare.

    http://files.bioware.com/masseffect/updates/repair.zip

I am pretty sure that this fix file is generic and once you unzip and run "Repair.exe" if will fix it, no matter what the game.

Let me know if it works or not.

Issues like these and the fact that my current DVD drive really struggles to read SecuROM disks (e.g. it didn't recognize DoW:Soulstorm at all, I had to copy the install files via my laptop DVD-drive) is why SecuROM ended up on my "No buy"-list along with Starforce. It's a shame SecuROM doesn't yet have the same volume of bad publicity, so it's more difficult to know beforehand which games use it.

I had a couple of game shortcuts in the start menu that behaved in a similar manner -- managed to delete them with my canine cunning. Is that the same sort of bug?

i had to pay for alcohol 120% but it makes 1:1 copies of securom-ed discs including my assassin's creed, bioshock, mass effect, and grid.

Derek: Thanks. Reloaded a Ghost image of Vista, installed Grid. Rightclick icons on desktop OK then patched. Crashes if I right-click.
    Ran repair, fixes.

Do I do this after each game install/patch that uses Securom or is 1 time enough?

Once should do it, from what I understand.
