Awful moments in American Fast food

Saw a Dairy Queen commercial today for: "Panini Bread Sandwiches".

This is what they look like:

    Ok:
Panini is like Italian for, sandwich
Which can be made from various types of bread
Are they grilling that in a waffle iron?

    So very, very wrong.

Panini has been used to mean "grilled in a sandwich press" for a while now. It may not be correctly taken from its Italian root, but it's kind of a common thing. Jason's Deli has a really tasty panini with grilled chicken, swiss cheese, pesto, fresh spinach, and roasted red bells. It is really fucking tasty.

They are calling it an "Iron Grilled Sandwich", not a Panini, so probably yes on the waffle iron.

I like panini sandwiches, and the idea of making them at home appeals to me.

I assume that cheap sandwich irons are available at Target and similar retailers?

Are there easy methods of making these things so they taste almost as good as those from the sandwich shops? I'm trying to eat reasonably healthy and I'd like to avoid smearing too much oil and fatty stuff on, if that makes a difference...

I just saw a TV commercial, and unlike the website, they called it a "Panini Bread Sandwich".

I know what a Panini is these days. That DQ thing? AINT IT.

Cheap and don't care about grill lines? Make your sandwich. Put it in a skillet. Put another skillet or a plate or something else flat on top of it, add weight to compress the sandwich. It's the compression that's the good part, the grilling is a bonus. Just go easy on the butter / oil and flip it once.

I've got one of the cuisinart sandwich presses...

    And it works great. ~$50.

It's a messy ordeal to do it like that. I like order in my consumption of nasty double layers of beef and cheese.

Yesterday, my wife and I pull in McDonalds to get a Big Mac, in what would turn out to be a failed attempted to suicide. It's 10:51. The lady in the drivethru says "Sorry. We don't serve lunch until exactly 11 oclock. I get confused, then unreasonably angry. "Uhhh...I don't want anything then!" So I'm ready to leave, but no! There's a car in front of me that has ordered some sort of unfathamable shit, and they are sitting there for like 5 minutes. By the time I get out of the queue it's 11am! I could drive around again and order. I could go inside and order. But fuck them! I go to Taco Bell across the street and find another way to slowly kill myself.

I can still see them laughing at me from inside the store, as I'm trapped in their line. I can still see it!

Weird. I saw it again last night and didn't catch that even on the look out for it.

Now I'm kind of jonesy for some dairyqueen. Haven't been to one in at least 15 years. Around here, they all seem to be in the suburban ghettos.

The ad I saw was touting the fact that it was "iron grilled", and the disembodied lips that are like a sort-of mascot for DQ thought it was so awesome that they should iron grill other DQ stuff, like Blizzards (cut to shot of what you'd expect), and then the lips re-thought that idea.

I just filled out my Blizzard card yesterday and got a free one! So now I have one and a half Blizzards in my freezer. Yummmm!

I wish they would keep the Cotton Candy Blizzard year round though.

    Look at the press releases.
All are served on grilled Panini-style bread...
Ciabatta? Foccacia? Well, look at that bread in the picture. It's perfectly uniform and looks like styrofoam. That would be choice "e", "not related to bread".

    Yum!

I am happy though that this thread is on the first google page for "dairy queen panini", though.

There are no DQs near me though. I charge QT3 to present a volunteer and get pictures, as well as taste reports. People who have eaten good paninis before are desired.

The same way we do it every night, Pinky. We tell them Americans can't appreciate it.

I have the same reaction when I see something labeled as "Chorizo Sausage" or "Carne Asada grilled steak" on a menu. Department of redundancy department in multiple languages.

Buzzword sandwich seems to be all the rage. Mmm, carne asada chorizo burger on a grilled-iron panini ciabatta bread bun with a chipotle mayo topping, now at Burger Lord.

I'd love to get one of those, but first I need to go to an ATM machine and put in my PIN number.

If we're getting hung up on the language thing, it should be pointed out that "Panini" is plural, so saying "A panini" is nonsense on multiple levels. What you want is a "panino bread sandwich."

There's two pieces of bread in it, isn't there?

In Toulon, France we used to order a smash sandwich where they made something like a long hamburger with the fries IN the sandwich and toasted it all in a press where they flattened it to hell. It was insanely good though.

The whole Panini craze kind of reminds me of that. It's just a pressed, toasted sandwich but still, it seems so much better.
