    Can't install new hardware

I've had an odd problem with my oldish XP-running computer for about a year now: I can't install any new hardware. I built it myself, and everything was fine for a year or more, but at some point, plug and play stopped working so I can't install any new hardware. It detects the new hardware when I boot up, but then the add new hardware wizard fails.

The old hardware works fine, but new things just do not go through. This is to a rather absurd extent: even simple things like a new mouse or a new CD ROM drive don't work. Though with the CD ROM drive if I hit "cancel" when I boot up and the add new hardware wizard pops up it works fine.

Does anybody have any idea what might be wrong? I'm not even sure exactly what to start looking for, on Google or my computer. I guess plug and play is broken? My personal theory is that StarForce broke it, but I don't have any evidence for that and I have uninstalled it without any help. :)

At first I thought it was just something funny with the CD drive, and I spent a lot of time deleting filter entries in the register, but since then it seems like it is a more systemic problem.

Sorry if I've asked about this here before.

Is your MB accepting USB 2.0? Most new devices are using USB 2.0. You must have a 2.0 compatible USB port on the computer for the 2.0 devices to be seen.

Hmm. That could be the problem with the mouse. I'll check it out. Thanks.

The other thing you haven't mentioned is whether you've tried a Windows reinstall. All it takes is a few corrupt files.

No, I haven't tried that. Maybe I should. I think I have my key around somewhere. I might just try holding on until I'm ready for a new computer.

    sfc /scannow

won't need a key, just an original cd. it'll replace corrupt files.

Weird. I'll have to try that, thanks!
