Having played Anno 1404 and still in a city builder mood, I saw the settlers 2 on GoG, having never played any of the series how good is it? I remember hearing that the series started off strong but got worse with further sequels.

The Something Awful Forums had a nice Let's Play series a year or so ago where some guy was playing through the entire Might & Magic series. I didn't see much past the first two, but it was a good way to relive the nostalgia for those early rough games without having to experience the pain yourself.

I've heard it said that Settlers 2 is the peak of the series.

I never played Settlers 2 either. I played the demo a bunch but never got around to buying it; I will definately be betting it from GOG. This week, most likely.

Bear in mind that Settlers 2 was recently relaunched under a different name, possibly with improved graphics.

I attempted to do that when I bought the LE M&M pack way back when VI came out and I just couldn't do the first two of the series. All that mapping and the gameplay was no longer fun. It might have been great at the time (I loved mapping games back then) but even those many years later it was a chore. Nowadays? ACK!

I like what AndrewM said above: watch a playthrough video to get the nostalgia.

Looking through the Let's Play archive for M&M reminded me that I had a whole notebook devoted to the Identify spell. I'd cast it on every new monster and then painstakingly write down all the details in the notebook. It sure seemed fun at the time...

Not to derail this thread, but if you're talking about the 10th Anniversary edition, I recently purchased it and could not get it to launch at all after installing or patching. I've seen many people online with the same problem and did not find a solution.

And it was never released in the States...I am a bit hesitant to get it from GoGamer.

Anyone have a link for that, or is it already part of the Let's Play archives (and thus only accessible to people who pay)?

There are these two on the separate archive site for the first two games, at least.

Am I remembering wrong that Might and Magic II had automapping?

There's always the Dwarf Catacombs in ... M&M VII, was it? Where you go seemingly randomly from room to room, but if you write down all of the possible exits from catacomb to catacomb, you can map the place out and then travel easily across the map / to the quest areas?

The Barrow Downs, I think they were called.

I can't remember, what is Heroes III multiplayer support like? Hotseat and direct IP connect? How hard is it to get several people playing together online?

I have barely scratched HoMM 2.

I have not had any problems getting Heroes 3 to work multiplayer on two Vista PCs, both using LAN and Direct IP. I haven't tried more than two players.

Man I loved heroes 3. I think the only part of all the normal + expansion campaigns I couldn't finish was the pirates one.

I think it was bugged for me anyway. I looked at a walkthrough that kept talking about fighting the opponents one by one, but in my game the first thing that happened is one of them rolled 2 others and built up a totally impossible lead.

Anyone have any experience beating that one?

I never had any real problems beating any of the Heroes games. But I've talked to other people who have had all kinds of problems. I think that personal style is a big deal in this game series, which makes it interesting just for that reason.

Many other games don't really allow much expression of style. But I guess a typical scenario doesn't immediately reveal any pressing tactical or strategic problem, and so people don't feel as pressed into a single obvious strategy as in some other games. Either that or there is something magical about the insight that you should optimize your resource income (especially gold) that some people just don't get, but that seems unlikely to me offhand.

Is the gold resource optimization you're describing in HOMM similar to King's Bounty, where you have to win each battle with a minimum of losses due to the limited, static resources?

I am aware of the lineage of those games but haven't played HOMM in a while and forgot the mechanics.

Yeah, it is much like King's Bounty in terms of combat, and having to worry about attrition, but KB is a little simpler in that regard too, though it can also be I suppose more challenging because you are only making money from combat and loot.

But in HoMM, of course you have to manage income over time as well as unit costs and combat attrition. In HoMM time is also an important resource, hence the value of Logistics and Pathfinding skills and the movement spells like Town Gate and Dimension Door.

In HoMM 3, are heroes, resources, or units transferable between the various campaign missions?

I don't think so. You are allowed to select between 3 options when starting a new scenario...a group of creatures, an item or some resources. You pick one of those. I think that is it, IIRC.

Yes, I think you can. It varies by campaign, but there are some in both HoMM2 and HoMM3 that allow you to carry over heroes. So if you leveled a hero up and built up his skills, you can then have that hero again in the next mission in the campaign. But resources and units? I don't think so, not as far as I can remember.

I picked up 2 last week, and started the Original Campaign. Unfortunately my heroes did not transfer after I beat the first map. After seeing this, I disappointedly started the random skirmish mode. If 3 lets me use the same heroes during campaign mode, I will pick it up ASAP.

It varies by campaign. I think it might be the expansion campaign in HoMM 2 that allows heroes to transfer forward, or maybe later maps in the main campaign. I can't remember details anymore, but I do remember it being there in HoMM2. I think HoMM 3 might allow it from the beginning, but again, it might vary by campaign. Certain campaigns are designed so that they'd be imbalanced if you had a strong hero coming in, but others are designed for it.

Yes, but it depends on the campaign.

By the way the best scenarios and campaigns for HoMM III are player-made. I haven't visited Celestial Heavens in a while, but if they still have all the old HoMM III stuff that would be great.

That's right, I think in III your top 3 Heroes may automatically transfer. Maybe I should cease conjecturizing at let someone chime in who has played in the last 3 years. :)

I've just bought my first gog games: Painkiller, Gothic I and II, Jagged Alliance 2, Fallout 2 and Freespace 2. I hate Windows, I left the Painkiller download on while I went out for dinner and when I came back my system had rebooted because of the vista auto update, leaving my download incomplete.

I love the fact that many games come with a separate soundtrack.

Is there a thread on qt3 about Freespace 2 mods?
