Monsters all have at least one elemental immunity in Hell difficulty -- if you've piled absolutely everything into one element, and have no significant physical attack, it's tough to solo (as is the case for my mid-70's javazon -- lightning immune foes == hosed).
Oh, and there are physical immunes sprinkled in as well.
I was able to kill Baal in Hell difficulty in 1.10, when Blizzard said that finishing the game solo would be impossible. Frozen Orb, Firewall, Thunderstorm, and a +4 skills Act 1 henchman. Without the henchman, taking down mobs that were immune to both fire and ice (such as, oh, Lister) took forever, though.
Diablo 2 is tied for my favorite game of all time right along with Final Fantasy Tactics.
I'm glad D3 looks as great as I've been hearing it looked. I can't believe though, that people on NeoGaf are already complaining about the art look after the initial showing.
Man they bitch so much about retarded shit it hurts my brain sometimes.
Sweet!
Re: Fighting diablo with a necro, so far on nightmare it hasn't been too bad, iron maiden + summon resist and my guys can take his nuke abilities while iron maiden chips away at his health.
I decided to max out iron maiden first before moving onto to skeleton as I think that is going to be a huge deal at boss fights. I can't remember if the last time I played D2 that I got to hell difficulty. It's going to be interesting to see how well this build is once I get there.
Assuming, you-, ahem, theoretically wanted to play Diablo 2 again. Which site would be the go-to place for builds?
The DiabloII.net Strategy Compendium used to be the best collection of them, but their listings seem to be broken at the moment. You'll probably find them in the forums there too, it'll just take more digging.
Edit: Just remembered that the Amazon Basin has some guides, too (not just amazons).

Is there a high resolution/textures mod for Diablo II? I'm interested, as I only ever played Diablo I, but don't think I have the stamina to look at the default DII graphics stretched across a 27" display.
I like the fact that you can be either gender of every class now.
Hmm, I guess the Amazon is pretty unlikely to return, then. Probably Rogue, Sorceror/ess, and some sort of Paladin-style class (probably a new one, but with auras) if they only do 5 as indicated in the FAQ.
The female barb is in a few of the screenshots on the official site and yes, she does have that Red Sonja vibe.
I guess a male sorceror could be kinda cool. I'm looking forward to seeing the female witchdoctor and wondering if she's going to be some old crone or a half-naked hottie.
In D1 it was "worse".
If you played a mage and went highest difficulty, by the time you got to hell everything had triple immunities or max resistances.
Ended up just going around with a golem and battlemage, spamming stone curse on everything in sight then trying to knock it down.
Was kind of a "zzzzzz".
Point of note: the expansion actually allowed the option for increased resolution, so if you're basing your memory of the graphics on the base game, it's already been dealt with somewhat.
Granted, that was just an increase from 800x600 to 1024x768 IIRC, so if you demand a higher res than that, you're kinda out of luck.
Actually, now that I think about it, it may have been a jump from 640 to 800.
It was 640*480 to 800*600, Both of which was pretty crazy low res even back when D2 was released eight years ago. But increasing it past that would run into the monster-triggering issue I mentioned.
Yeah, it was 640 to 800.
edit: or what Kalle already ninja-posted.
And if the trigger distance is changed, that would alter the balance of the entire game since there would potentially be many more monsters alerted to your presence than normal. This seems to be a rather large can of worms.
Modding D2 == trying to mod Chuck Norris
